[0:00] the words I would venture to try and make a few remarks wrong you will find in the 18th chapter of the gospel according to St. Luke the 38th verse and he cried saying Jesus thou son of David have mercy on me the 38th verse of the 18th chapter of the gospel according according to St. Luke he cried saying Jesus have mercy on me in this particular chapter the Savior is sitting before us the vast difference between the righteous that he had made righteous and those that are righteous in their own eyes and so in looking for a moment at his work here with regards to being a sinner to the knowledge of their sin he spoke this parable which we are so familiar with in the word of God of those two that went up to the temple to pray the one a Pharisee and the other a publican while we may look around us rather than within us to find these two characters in our own hearts and so we need not look hither and nither around us and others but look at ourselves that cause man by nature and in his religious self as a Pharisee and he'll pray thus with himself and he can be left to look upon himself to think he's better than others but when rightly taught and brought her to the knowledge of his said condition he has the spirit of the publican and away goes the other spirit of which he may be of and also how our Savior has speaks to how shall God avenge his own elect to cry unto him day and night well he knows how many of us have a cry and that cry which cannot be withheld [4:01] or was wrong while he was this blind man he had that awful infirmity of blindness literally but you know I believe there is a lesson to be learned here as we are born blind into this world that is blind to the knowledge of our souls and blind out of the knowledge of God and this blindness is such how that in my leader man on and on and on even in religion and never behold how that mighty and great God that dwelleth in heaven well you and I then were born blind but we hope there was a day when it came to pass as we read in the thirty-fifth verse and it came to pass that as he was as he come nigh to Jericho a certain blind man sat by them while he saw him begging or else how we would desire to look a little at that time when there was a certain day how when how God in his love compassion came just where we were in our blind condition so blind that we knew not anything of ourselves [6:20] I knew not the way of salvation but by his grace and favor as we lay though we knew it not perhaps really lay by the wayside begging it's a wonderful favor if we could look upon a day when we were brought to beg and there we may have had to lay by the wayside in that big condition well the day comes comes when our savior in his love and compassion passes by not passes on but passes by and behold the sinner who we have called to open his blind eyes [7:30] I say behold him and also causes him to beg for some of us had to go on in that past many years that by encourage one here who may feel that be begging how many years how that their eyes might be opened well if you are among these you'll find how they'll be with you as it was with this blind man here in the 39th verse and follow the one we've read by whatever text and they which went before rebuked him that he should hold his peace well you'll find these characters within going before you one of them is unbelief would endeavor to cause you to hold your peace [8:44] I would shut your mouth out from crying that unbelief I wish is our daily trouble but there was a day with us when unbelief was such that we could unbelieve that ever he would open out mine eyes and then that is pride awful pride abominable pride the dear host is too proud to seek a hiding place a pride which would hold us past and endeavors to cause us to hold our peace to cry out perversy and then there is carnality our wichy carnal hearts those in dwelling sins of ours those things we cannot neither quell nor round evil thoughts many things will rise up in their heart hatred and devilish thoughts as well within some might say well it's not a very good picture well it isn't it's foul and blank man and therefore these things are in man by nature and these are those things that are going before to hinder our coming unto him who is able to see even unto the uttermost [10:55] I speak these things because how we feel that there are those who may not quite understand perhaps these things in God's word that are little record that there are those that are couched beneath the world that are applicable unto the condition of man by nature so while this blind man had a multitude around him to hinder his coming to the Savior so you will find with one soul there will be those things that will hinder us coming under him but the point is if you press on the crowd will fly and if you pray to [12:12] Jesus cry he will stand supplies as soul had always up pressing through the crowd like the dear woman who had that awful trouble when she came to attempt to come to the Savior how you see she had to press through the crowd before she was enabled to touch the hem of his garden and you will find it throughout the word more than those those who came to the Savior had opposition it's not what some would tell us it's easy to repent it's easy to condemn the Savior we're only to say that we are sinners and before him and also to give our heart to him oh my friends what a mercy to be kept from such abominable lives that some would have us for him when we know that without him we can do nothing now we cannot take one step toward heaven only by his the drawing of the father for [13:53] Christ said no man coming out of me except the father of the father so alone though the blind man had all his multitude against him yet he cried yet the more Bye why is that what I believe is because our case is urgent we be shown our blindness by nature and therefore it is an urgent case the poet's mind is an urgent best case [14:55] I'm blind but I want to view him who I know to be a mighty saviour by the word and by the testimony of others but I want to know it myself I'm not satisfied with the mere knowledge in the letter of truth or in the knowledge that others have received it it's my soul how stands the case with my soul and therefore I know there are these things that oppose there will be that continual continual cry under him and because this man here cried under him to seek the saviour heard him heard his cry and commanded him to be brought under him oh what a mercy how many sinners and be brought drawn by the cause of eternal love under the saviour how that he may speak his request before him well his request thou son of David have mercy on me so personal isn't it all who have that knowledge given that his mercy have met our case and delivered us while his mercy is such that it reaches and to all those that are blind yea and all those that are are sinners who have been taught it and whatever crime [17:18] God puts in the heart the day will come when he will answer that crime he may wait until one seems almost ready to give up where he comes under his people when they have nothing to pay and nothing in themselves when they are no blessed came to some others when we lay in the open field we hope we could say better to live although we may not feel the sweetness and the blessedness of our knowledge in exercise that we come to God's house this morning yet there is that looking back upon those days when we cry this prayer have mercy on me how short a prayer but what a wonderful prayer it is oh my friends the shortest prayers are the most we all they are indeed those that have squeezed out of our heart as sheer necessity and when perhaps we may have felt done as well as well as well as well as well as well as well as well as well and yet the heart crying out have mercy upon me why I wonder how many there are here even now in the secrets of their heart are crying out have mercy on me [19:20] God knows though you may be hidden from those around you why does he know because he put the cry there that's why and if he put that cry there be assured of this one thing he does not and cannot deny so for he will answer that cry to your joy and comfort in all time and then you will be able to say my Lord and my God then you will be able to bathe in his love and in his mercy how there are those times how that intervene when there are many fears and last he will not hear your cry as one said [20:24] I cry and shout but he shoddeth out my prayer another one speaks like this it is mercy to be gone forever would he be favorable no more well it is I believe even as we cry in the first place have mercy upon me and also have some hope that we have been recipients of that mercy it will be a lifetime prayer because there will be a new contracted guilt which come into paths aware we should want his mercy well we want daily mercy daily keeping above him or our wonders felt that of late we seem to wander from those things we love there seems to be so much transpired within seems almost not let [21:51] I say almost almost overwhelmed the divine realities with what's new and takes death world is called an exercise and to cry again have mercy on me well he came on this earth that he might be merciful under simmers he came that he might obtain that everlasting righteousness and that he might be the one that should give mercy unto his people the wonderful thing if you and I have had any knowledge of that mercy made known unto us well he had mercy on us even before we realized it about and forth in our childhood days of us how his mercy was watching over us though we knew it not will we say before [23:12] I was beat in my own case save for 40 grain and save from being choked on the next week oh how wonderful are he works beyond all understanding aren't they that we see mercy toward us even from our birth but as something more we see his mercy to us in providing for us as something more than even those things he's given us on earth his mercy providing for us a way whereby we might be delivered our throng being drowned in the things of this world and sunk in iniquity and sin to rise no more made provision [24:16] I say to deliver us our throng as an awful condition in that he hath provided his mercy for the deliverance of the soul from eternal and everlasting death came to shed his precious blood upon the cross that we might have an eternal and everlasting redemption that we might be washed from our sins and that our will as once we were blind to behold it now he has given us those eyes to see that he is that one and only saviour the one that came to become the propitiation of our sins to deliver us from the curse of the [25:22] Lord and to deliver us from going down to the Lord for how wonderful art it works and his ways past finding out and when he said that which is impossible with men is possible with God and if it looks at impossibility for you sinner it's your poor soul to be saved by grace while impossible with God for we have so brought in everlasting salvation to claim the farthest and the violence of sinners on this sin Lord and you are we shall be delivered from pharisaic pride when we know his power is such that when we pass one another through any particular part of this world world and we know and believe that it is possible that the virus around us to be delivered for it only needs the arrow our conviction to enter and down falls the ice talking professor of religion and also the wickedest of earth before his mighty power this is known to be true we have it recorded we have it do we not with the apostle [26:56] Paul who was a Pharisee and he said himself of the spirit of the Pharisees and who brought up the feet of the in all the doctrines of the Pharisees and yet you see while on the way the masters determined to their healed as the people of God how he was cut down on the way to Damascus and I may just say here a friend was telling me on the past week where I been how he was a blessed people and how far he had gone in wickedness when God cut him down in this world he's the same God you know yes so that they are compelled to come they shall come who are willing to perish as so there's no man to work in it [28:00] God is the caller and the deliverer and he will in his own time and way so that I ought to feel and have felt much of hate when I pass various ones on the highway I dare not look upon them with this day because you know it is in God's eternally greed and purposes and with some that they shall believe a lot and be damned and also are the wicked that must fill up the cover their iniquity what have you and I my friends to say to these things does you not humble us to know if we look at it rightly we might have been left there to perish oh what a mercy it is to look at these things around and of course some of us are witnesses to this truth we were on the road you know we were determined to have our fear of that and determined to go our own way through this life but he comes the mightier than he that dwelleth in us and causes us to lay down those seeds wherein once we delighted that he made them hateful to us the bitter waters of sin like the waters of my to the soul and now through his mercy how we desire and want those things even to know something of what you sang here this morning that river that wonderful river which is [29:55] Christ himself which flows into the soul and causes it to rejoice mercy is welcome news indeed that to those who guilty stand which you feel what help they need will bless the helping hand so then this mercy comes rich and free oh how free it is to seek so free how there was evidence of it here with this blind man how Christ said Jesus said out here we see by side thy faith of safety oh what a mercy to have this faith that faith and believe he is able to do it so if you have that faith to believe he is able to do it it might only be a spark of faith but if you have faith that the must have seen our savior said you will say this mountain to be cast into the depths of the sea and so it is if this is a mountain to your center as regards the knowledge of his mercy towards you still cry under him and with that cry [31:46] God gives faith you may not think you have faith he never gives a cry letting his faith with it they go together it's a flickering faith as I call it sometimes seems to be early spark it flickers you know how that is sometimes isn't it with a flame it will flicker as though he's struggling to live or to blaze it will so your faith sometimes flickers just go out so that may he be granted unto you to have a faith like that and that you may one day see how that God hath fended into a flame that you might believe he is able to save you even unto the uttermost you who might feel the violence and the blackness of sinners then there may be one or more he say well [32:56] I'm so blind that I cannot understand his word often well that's what many suffer from with one's so blindness as regards to these things well if that be the case we desire him to open our blind eyes that we may see wondrous things out of his law that is the law of the gospel and until he opens our eyes to behold that we cannot or what a mercy it is sometimes when he opens up some portion of his holy world which we did not before understand he opened our blind eyes to behold that and then sometimes with a child of [33:59] God they are blind they cannot behold their saviour that blindness they want their eyes open once more that they may behold their saviour as they hope they have here before when he's been under them are there all and they've been able to embrace him now and now they may feel his absence well some others have to prove that we often feel his absence but you know although we might feel it we all remember this from my good hope there how that he is ever with us because if once he has been with us he dwells within you heard me say once he dwells within he never departs it is why we are preserved because you see there is nothing that can overflow his kingdom and he said the kingdom of [35:18] God is within you so then in all our blindness we need to come again and again to open our eyes to see like the other blind man once came to him he touched his eyes you know he said I see and told him to look off his eyes see men as trees working to what do you like that you see to be able to see in a fog as it will you have some knowledge of these things but it does seem clear it troubles you doesn't it well what you need is another touch and he will come even again and give you another touch then you will be able to look up and see clearly why I often feel that in reading the word of [36:32] God I know there is something there I can't see unless God reveals it and shows us how we cannot but see it as through a fog but if we continue perhaps to read that portion over again and if not then again later there will be a time come which we see it clearly I've often found that to be true and then may I say here if there's anything we cannot understand the poet was clear if all there dark appear in wild I want of sight now imperfection can be there for all God's ways and works are right so that what we need if we come across a portion that the dark portion to us ask for further light and in one day given you'll find that sometimes perhaps in the beginnings of your experience and there'll be that questioning and then often the enemy will come in and you say well if you as a child of [38:00] God you understand this sometimes he'll put a cloud over it may tempt you to disbelieve it and call atheism to rise up in your heart I know all this path but you know these are those things that call us exercises causes us to cry again and again and again unto him and while we have these exercises it is a proof I feel that that life to cause that death Christ said no not anything oh what of mercy then to have these lively things within us how that causes us to search not only our own hearts but to search the scriptures and see if these things be so now that was said when I be nether and ever the things that [39:15] I declare go home and search the scriptures and see if they be so oh my friends we do not want to be in any wise one before the people that should not be understood well the mercy of God in his love and mercy keeps us close to the scripture which cannot be which cannot fail but is impelable what a mercy it is meant to have and these things write in our mouths and he cried and saying Jesus the son of David have mercy on me you see he had a case a wonderful mercy to have a case I hope that all in worried some who will hear might have a case cause if you have a case it'll be yours and it'll be one of importance and if you are unable to cry this prayer have mercy on me and to continue it the dying will come when you will speak of it yes so as long as we die following our labors not to pop up with pride but to give glory unto him as they did here so as they have to blind man you see glory by [41:08] God and all the people that saw him praise God yes even those that saw it we believe the issue here doesn't stay however those who beheld it have gave praise unto God so that there is a glorifying God in his dealings with us when he has opened our eyes oh he can all praise yes there will be no praise to man there will be no coming to men and saying well it was through your sermon that this happened to pop him up with pride but they'll come and may speak of it to feel that union and there will be union one with the other when this is known I don't understand me rightly there but you know we ministers need to be kept from that wretched abondable eight foot intestinal pride [42:19] I don't know what it might wind up in the heart to be kept humble is a wonderful favour if God's word is blessed to one force in another that God might ever praise and man be found to be nothing at all for and all that is love what ever you may be enduring even now can forbid that life to be made known in the soul and once is known thank [43:24] God for this one thing there will never be any more dead but one day inheritance of that life be told. Forevermore, he cried saying, Jesus, thou son of David, hath mercy on me. [43:41] While may he grant it, he may have mercy upon each one of us. We need it. Amen.
