Sunday School Address - Remember thy Creator (Quality: Good)

[0:00] Thank you Mr Hyde. This is in my mind this afternoon as the Lord enables from the last chapter of the book of Ecclesiastes.

[0:13] Ecclesiastes chapter 12. I just mentioned as our friend quoted from the 11th chapter that in the morning sow thy seed and in the evening withhold not thine hand.

[0:30] Thou knowest not whether shall prosper either this or that or whether they both shall be alike good. Humanly speaking there is a third possibility that neither will be my good.

[0:44] But God's word is not mentioned there. What encouragement there is for sowers whether as ministers of the gospel, deacons, parents, grandparents, friends and so on.

[1:01] Now this 12th chapter commences with this exhortation. Remember now thy creator in the days of thy youth.

[1:15] Our natural tendency is to put off the consideration that one day we shall be old and afflicted as the many parables as it were that follow in the next six verses set forth.

[1:36] To the world's word to the world's word to the world. To the world's word to the world. To the world's word to the world. To the world's word to the world. To the world's word to the world. As they dread the thought of old age and of having to finish their life here below. But I do not believe it will be so with the Lord's people as they draw near to the end of their journey.

[1:58] We are of course surrounded by parables. Soon if the Lord will. Soon if the Lord will. According to his promise. There will be another harvest. When I was a boy in the 1930s.

[2:13] I would sometimes go with my father who was then farming. Into the harvest field. This was before the days of moisture meters. That farmers have these days to determine whether the grain is ripe.

[2:27] And he would take an ear of corn here and another there. And rub them together in his palms. Now what was he doing? He was seeing whether the grain still clung to the chaff.

[2:42] If you take a green ear of wheat. And you may think of this perhaps in a month or so's time. If you take a green ear of wheat.

[2:53] You cannot easily separate the grain from the chaff. They cling together. But when it is fully ripe. The grain no longer clings to the chaff.

[3:06] And is easily separated. And so the Lord especially uses the afflictions of old age. To separate us from the things of time.

[3:21] And especially blesses the souls more or less of his people. With the desire to depart. And to be with Christ.

[3:31] But now this first verse. Tells us to remember now. While we are young. While we are in good health.

[3:43] Thy creator. In the days of thy youth. When I was a boy at Oakington. Where my family had been for generations.

[3:54] And the ministers used to speak. Of death and judgment to come. I used to say in my heart. When I'm an old man. Or when I'm seriously ill.

[4:07] I'll think about these things. But I don't want to think about them now. It will spoil my enjoyment. Of my worldly pleasures. Just like Felix.

[4:19] In the Acts of the Apostles. When Paul reasoned with him. Of temperance. Righteousness. And judgment to come. Felix trembled.

[4:31] He felt the solemnity. The Apostles rose. But he gave the natural reply. The human heart. Go thy way for this time. When I have a convenient season.

[4:45] I will call for them. And so. It would be with us all by nature. If we live to be a hundred. It would never be a convenient season.

[4:56] In thy nature. Remember now. Thy creator. In the days of thy youth. While the evil days come not.

[5:13] Evil often means trials and tribulations. As it does here. Nor the years draw nigh. When thou shalt say.

[5:24] I have no pleasure. In them. While the sun. Or the light. Or the moon. Or the stars be.

[5:36] Not darken. Nor the clouds return. After the rain. When we have had. When we have had. Cloudy days. And continual rain.

[5:48] How welcome. It is when we. Find the sun. Rising again. In the beautiful morning. As we had a week or two ago.

[6:00] And then it comes to the various figures. Setting forth the weaknesses of our body. In the day when the. Keepers of the house shall tremble.

[6:14] There are often no doubt. You younger ones have seen. Grandparents and older friends. Now their hands shake. Normally. On an evening.

[6:25] If I'm not. Reaching. I sit down. After we've had our evening meal. And an hour or so later. My wife usually joins me. After.

[6:37] Another hour or so. I usually. Get up to make an evening drink. But she said. Recently. I shall have to soon. Make the evening drink.

[6:48] You spill so much Horlicks. On the kitchen counter. As I take a teaspoon full. Heaped up out of the. A container to put it in the. Cut my handshakes.

[6:59] As much of it. Spills. The keepers. Of the house. Shall tremble. And the strong men. Shall bow themselves.

[7:12] Our legs are. Of course. By far. The strongest. Of our limbs. When we are young. We might be able. To do a handstand. And remain.

[7:22] With weight. On our. Arms. For. Perhaps. Part of a minute. But. We soon. Would collapse. And yet. We can stand. On our legs. And walk.

[7:33] All the day long. But in old age. They as it were. Bow themselves. And the grinders. The teeth.

[7:45] Cease. Because. They are few. In the days of scripture. They were. Of course. No. False teeth. Or spaticus. And so.

[7:57] In those days. Food. Had to be. Chopped up small. So that a person. Without teeth. Could swallow it. Without difficulty.

[8:09] And those. That look out. Of the windows. Be dark. Again. With no spectacle. Sight. Fail. And.

[8:21] We read. So much. Of course. In the scriptures. Of the blind. Of whom. So often. The Lord. Mercifully. Heal.

[8:33] And the doors. Shall be shut. In the stream. Old people. Cannot. Get out. And about.

[8:43] As they did. When they were. Young. And indeed. So often. Do not have the desire. To do so. To do so. And I. My early.

[8:55] Married days. We had an elderly couple. Who attended the chapel. They were married. I think. Nearly 70 years. Before. One of them. Passed away. And it used to surprise me.

[9:07] They never wanted to go away. On holiday. And I. So much. Look forward. To going away. With my family. And now.

[9:18] I am old. I can. Well understand. How they feel. And with no particular. Desires. For holidays. Myself. The doors. Shall be shut.

[9:29] In the stream. When the sound. Of the. Grinding. Is mine. Hearing. So often. Fails.

[9:40] As the. Body. Ages. And. We need. Hearing. Age. Which. We should be. Thankful. In passing. I should say.

[9:51] For so many. Of the provisions. That we have. In our generation. Which help us. In these various. Afflictions. And he shall rise up.

[10:05] At the. Voice of the. Bow. Probably. When we. Sleep. After lunch. As many of us do.

[10:16] When we are old. Or it may be. Because. We go to bed early. Because we are exhausted. But. Nevertheless. We wake up so early. Invariably. I am awake.

[10:26] By. Five in the morning. Eyes up. At the. Voice of the bird. And. All the daughters. Of music. Shall be.

[10:37] Brought into two. Technical. Subjects. The. Normal. Range. Of hearing. For a. Young. Person. Is. Up to about. Fifteen thousand.

[10:49] Kilo. Cycles. Or. Cycles. Per second. Or hearts. As it is called. These days. As. A person. Gets. Older. They cannot.

[10:59] Hear. The higher. Frequencies. The sound. Of course. Is. Transmitted. By vibrations. Of the air. And in our ears. Are. Hairs.

[11:10] Of various lengths. The longer. Hairs. Vibrate. To the lower. Frequencies. And we hear. In our brain. A low. No. The short.

[11:21] Hairs. Vibrate. To the high. Frequencies. And we hear. A high. No. But. The natural. Tendency. Of old ages. For these. Higher. Frequencies.

[11:32] Not to be. Hara. Just in passing. To. Perhaps. Make you. Sympathetic. But to those. That are. Deaf. Deafness.

[11:43] Is not just. A matter of. Volume. So much. Of it. Is. Distortion. It's like. Listening. To a foreign. Language. That you. Don't know. Very well.

[11:54] If a person. Speak. Slowly. And distinctly. You. Can. Follow. Them. But if they. Speak. Fast. Or gabble. You. Just get. Lost. So.

[12:06] Hope you. Younger. Ones. Will. Be. Sympathetic. With. Those. That are. Old. Remembering. Now. That one day. These things. May be. Your.

[12:16] Portion. All the. Daughters. Of music. Shall. Be. Brought. Now. Also. When. They. Shall. Be. Afraid. Of.
