[0:00] As the Lord shall be pleased to help me, I shall call your attention to a subject you find in Psalm 29 and the 10th verse. The Lord sitteth upon the flood, yea, the Lord sitteth king forever. Psalm 29 and the 10th verse. This is a word which proclaims what is a foundation truth. And all who have the great mercy to be taught of God are brought to stand upon a foundation truth to be able to view the dealings of God aright, whether in the world abroad or in the dealings of God with them as they journey on through life. The word of God proclaims foundation truths. And it is a mercy when you can enter into those foundation truths and feel as you want to feel regarding the dealings of God with you. Something like the hymn writer describes it, how firm a foundation ye saints of the Lord is laid for your faith in his excellent word. What more can he say than to you he has said, you who unto Jesus for refuge have fled.

[2:08] And now sometimes in everyday life you learn of happenings in the world abroad. Some of them are mighty matters and you may contemplate them and know not what to think as to how those matters will fall out. But if you look into the word of God and think on this word which I have read from which I hope grace will be given to say something helpful to you, the Lord sitteth upon the flood, yea the Lord sitteth king forever, you will be helped to view those things aright and not fall a prey to confusion of mind or be filled with ifs and buts and hows as to how things will be. But you will be helped to contemplate the word of God in that which it has to say concerning his people. And you sing about it. And it is much on my mind in the latter days of my ministry that I do wish all of you who sing the songs of Zion would think more about what you sing.

[3:37] I am not fitting any caps on. But I just want to bring you as the Lord shall help me to do it down to bedrock truth. And now you have sung this many a time. In every state secure, kept as Jehovah's eye. It is well with them while life endure and well when called to die. And now if you do indeed believe that, then that will help you to stay your mind upon God. And as you help to do so, you will feel within a sweet blessed quietness of mind that will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee because he trusted in thee. I know that sometimes as you view matters in the world abroad, it seems as though hell itself is let loose on the earth and so it is. And the devil is working overtime to do all the mischief he can against God and godliness. But then it still remains in the sacred pages. In this was the Son of God manifest that he might destroy the works of the devil.

[5:07] And what you should be more concerned about is to live in the truth of the hymn that you have just been singing. Rejoice! The Lord is King! Yes. And now I want, as the Lord to help me, to look at this word from just two viewpoints of it. And in approaching the subject, I must look, as you all know, as my wont to do, at the setting of it. The Lord sitteth upon the flood, yea, the Lord sitteth King forever. And now, godly scholars tell us that this word takes our minds back to the flood in Noah's days. First of all, as to its meaning.

[6:07] And I need not take up time in going into details in defining what happened then, because you all know. The word of God declares that the wickedness of man then was very great upon the earth.

[6:25] And at length, the patience of God, God, although it had been lengthened out long, it came to that time when he determined to pour out his judgments upon a guilty world.

[6:43] But in the meantime, the Lord had made provision, and Noah is declared to have been a preacher of righteousness for a hundred and twenty years while the ark was a building.

[7:03] I've often thought about that picture, and sometimes, as grace is given, you can ponder it to purpose and profit. Think of the world as it was then.

[7:16] Think of Noah and those who helped him in building the ark. And the great majority of the people who dwelt then looked upon Noah as a fool or a fanatic.

[7:33] But Noah went on doing that which God had put in his heart for him to do. Noah, being moved with fear, being wary, the margin is, constrained by God, he built the ark.

[7:55] And all the while, he declared what was going to be the outcome and what would be the dealings of God on a guilty world if there was no manifestation of repentance.

[8:08] that God would block mankind from off the earth except those who would be sheltered in the ark which he was building.

[8:21] And so it fell out. When the time came, Noah and his family circle went into the ark and the Lord shut him in.

[8:32] And the heavens gathered blackness and the foundations of the great deep were broken up and the judgments of God were poured forth.

[8:45] And then the guilty world without knew that Noah was not a fool or a fanatic but that he was a prophet and that he spoke words of soberness, words of warning, but for all those outside the ark it was too late and the world was drowned.

[9:11] The Lord sitteth upon the flood yea, the Lord sitteth king forever. Just two comments I want to make then I will open up the subject as my mind runs to do so.

[9:28] God always gives warning of what he is about to do if so be any of mankind shall take heed thereto and get the benefit of it.

[9:45] Thus Noah preached and he is said to be a preacher of righteousness for a hundred and twenty years. But it would seem I say this with great reverence it would seem he never had any result attend his ministry.

[10:07] Only he and his family circle went into the ark and were saved to begin a new world according to God's purpose.

[10:19] verse Mrs. Chaplin who was a very gifted poetess a godly woman of a truth she has a wonderful poem what became of Noah's carpenters there they were helping in the work assisting because it was a great work to do for Noah's ark to be built and all that God designed to be in it that the world might be repopulated and begin anew but many who were outside the ark and assisted in the building of it were amongst those who went down when a guilty world was drowned and now that is one comment the other comment is this another ark is being built greater than Noah is building it one who dwelt on earth a while as verily man verily God and who said upon this rock

[11:34] I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it and now that church is equivalent to the ark of God and it is being built and there are hundreds thousands tens of thousands of men ordained of God preachers of righteousness who were warning a guilty world as to what is to come when time shall be no more when God will again pour out his judgments on the earth not by water but by fire and as God said to Noah come thou and all thy house into the ark so all those ordained of God to preach the gospel as their help to do it they encourage poor sinners to hear the gospel and to repent and to believe it and to put

[12:44] God to the test and to shelter in Jesus Christ who is indeed a refuge for sinners which the gospel makes known it is found in the merits of Jesus alone and the weary the tempted and burdened by sin were never exempted from entering therein but the world is a thousand times worse nowadays in its wickedness than it was in Noah's day because the population is so much the larger and it can still be said the wickedness of man is very great on the earth but the ark of God is being built and the Lord is adding unto the church daily such as should be saved has he added you are you concerned that you should be added unto that people whom he has determined to save with an everlasting salvation or do you feel like those people did long ago who thought that Noah was a fool or a fanatic and turn a deaf ear to the preaching of the gospel and still determined to live as you were born live after the flesh the things of the flesh although the word of God warns you that there is a day to come when God should judge the world in righteousness it is a very solemn consideration and now that is the setting of the subject but I want to look at it from an individual viewpoint as it refers to people taught of

[14:46] God many of you and I hope the preacher too the Lord sitteth upon the flood yea the Lord sitteth king forever there are two viewpoints of the subject one is there will be the experience referred to you will find in your life as you journey on that you will be called upon to go through floods but you will find if you were taught of God when thou passest through the waters I will be with thee and through the rivers they shall not overflow thee it means that the Lord will control the floods although he ordains that you should go through these floods yet he will help you to be like

[15:46] Israel of old and they went through the flood on foot think of what the apostle Paul declares concerning Israel by faith they pass through the red sea as by dry land you dear young people think about that you must not read the word of God cursorily and pass over that which is all important truth showing how great is our God with whom you and I have to do as by dry land and it says in the book of Exodus the depths were congealed in the heart of the seas so that when the water stood up as a wall on either side they were just frozen think of that congealed water is ice and the word of

[16:58] God tells us the depths were congealed in the heart of the seas and the ground was frozen too and they went over as by dry land but which the Egyptians are saying to do were drowned it was Israel's God sitting upon the flood yes controlling it for Israel's good and deliverance from Egyptian bondage the Lord sitteth upon the flood and now there is one thing I want to make plain and that is that in the context it tells us the voice of the Lord is upon the waters the God of glory thundereth the Lord is upon many waters and he says in another psalm the floods have lifted up their voice and now when into your life there comes the equivalent of floods tribulation whatever its nature which is like a flood there is the voice of the

[18:19] Lord in it I have often thought of a word in Micah hear ye the rod and him who hath appointed it you might think it would have been printed see ye the rod no hear ye the rod and him who hath appointed it so that when you are called to go through floods in the dealings of God with you God is saying something to you and oh that you might say speak Lord for thy servant hear it oh give me Samuel's ear the open ear oh Lord alive and quick to hear each whisper of thy word yes oh to hear what

[19:20] God the Lord will say in all his dealings with us and now I look at these floods and I would look also how the Lord sitteth king upon them the subject is very great and I hardly know from which viewpoint to approach it first but it might be well to look as to how the Lord sits king upon whatever flood it is that may come upon you or yours and mark the wording the Lord sitteth king and now you sang rejoice the Lord is king and as a king he reigns and he reigns on a throne and that throne is a throne of grace had it been just a throne of judgment there would have been no preaching of the gospel no help in

[20:34] God for you no hope but blessed be God he is approachable and his own word is let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace to obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need and now as the Lord sitteth king forever and sits upon a throne that is to denote how he would deal with his people there from it denotes a great truth not much understood I fear but it is a beautiful truth a deep down truth and good it is when you can enter into it the sovereignty of God I have said many times in my long ministry the key stone in the arch of truth is the sovereignty of

[21:41] God without faith it is impossible to please him he that cometh to God must believe that he is and that in all that he is he has a right to be what he is and none can question his dealings or doings only for you and I to seek divine aid to humble ourselves under his mighty hand in his dealings and declare with Paul oh how unsearchable are thy judgments and thy ways past finding out do ask the Lord to open up to you the doctrine of his divine sovereignty and if he is pleased to do it I can tell you how you will feel because once or twice or thrice in my life

[22:46] I have learned it just a little thou art our potter we are the clay then you will feel let but my fainting heart be blessed with thy sweet spirit for its best oh God to thee I leave the rest thy will be done glad you will be to feel the lord sitteth king over all that is to do with you and yours and you owning his divine sovereignty it is the lord let him do what seemeth him good and as the lord sitteth king he exercises not only his sovereignty but his authority and that is to be seen in that lovely holy of holies chapter in john's gospel as thou hast given him power over all flesh that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him and this is life eternal that they might know thee the only true

[24:14] God and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent such is the authority the lord exercises as he sits king upon the throne of grace and he declares I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious I will have mercy but then there is a function for the king as he reigns on the throne and that is to govern and what a beautiful word there is in Isaiah concerning Jesus Christ who is the king referred to the lord city king it is he who is verily God verily man he who is king in Zion and it declares in Isaiah and the government should be upon his shoulder did you ever feel like that in the dealings of

[25:22] God with you when it may be you looked at his dealings and everything in your life seemed to be awry when you felt like Jacob all these things were against me because you were viewing these things which had arisen as they appeared to you to be but when you can enter into this word be still and know that I am God then you realize the Lord sitteth upon the flood yea the Lord sitteth king forever and you desire your life to be ordered as he shall see fit to govern you and yours it is good sometimes yea at all times but it is only sometimes alas you can say it reign o'er me as king accomplish thy will and powerfully bring me forth from all ill till fallen before thee we lord thy love name ascribe in all glory to

[26:42] God and the lamb just one other viewpoint of the lord sitting king on his throne and blessed be his name that it is a throne of grace there is one word which you read in psalm 72 which I much like and it speaks about Jesus Christ all the way through that psalm and it says he shall have dominion and now that is a great word to come into our vocabulary in things divine and remember if you and I get to heaven we have got to learn to sing unto him that loved us and washed us in his own blood be dominion and now you must learn the keynote as you journey on through life and desire that he whom you desire to serve shall exercise dominion over you and your life as you live it so that you must not be fretful irritable cantankerous or rebellious when things may arise and you cannot understand the why and where for you must learn as grace is given unto him be the dominion yes much might be said along that line of thought the

[28:32] Lord sitteth king forever and now as the Lord sits upon his throne of grace he has much to do which he has set forth in the word of his grace that he is determined to do ere time shall cease to be and therefore as he reigns upon the throne of grace he fulfills some beautiful scriptures there is one in another psalm not far off from this one behold the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him upon them that hope in his mercy to deliver their soul from death and to keep them alive in famine you see dear friends young and old as you look round the world you must ever remember it is not being run by chance or uphazard there are many things that keep happening and as you read about them you feel sad and you should do and some things you read about horrify you and you should be horrified but you must remember the

[30:01] Lord sitteth upon the flood yea the Lord sitteth king forever and all these various happenings are open to God and he knows the end of a thing from the beginning of it and although some of these things may seem hard to be understood and you may even fall afraid to question as to why God should ever allow it to happen but it is not for you to question God because the word of God tells us he is infinite in wisdom and excellent in counsel and wonderful in working there cannot be any mistake that infinite wisdom can make but that all is ordered for his glory and the good of his people and you must seek to have that frame of mind the

[31:18] Lord sitteth upon the flood yea the Lord sitteth king forever and he sitteth there on his throne to fulfill his purposes and every day his purposes are being brought to pass you cannot see the deep design but when at length his purposes are fulfilled then it will be seen the church of Christ complete and a guilty world condemned and the glory of God made known in it all another thing the Lord sitteth king to do is to fulfill his promises the word of his grace there are exceeding great and precious promises and his eye runs to and fro throughout the whole earth to see every poor sinner drawing near to him on the throne of grace pleading some promise and as that poor sinner is helped to plead in the name of

[32:32] Jesus he fulfills that promise he brings it to pass in his soul's experience and makes his goodness to pass before that seeking soul in the way not only so the Lord sitteth king on the throne of grace not only to bring to pass his promises and fulfill his purposes but in the word of his grace there are prophecies and there are some not yet brought to pass but God will not fail to do what the word of God declares he will do and there is a day to come oh that it were nearer than it seems to be when Jesus shall reign where the sun doth his successive journeys run his kingdom stretch from shore to shore to moon shall wax and wane no more

[33:37] I can never understand why that hymn was left out of our hym book but the word of God makes it very plain there is a day to dawn when it shall be said the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord and of his Christ and all that is happening in the world as you look round it in its chaos and confusion God is over ruling it to that final working out of what he has promised to do I will work and who shall let her hinder it and then there was just another thought the Lord sitteth king and he sitteth king on the throne of grace to fulfill all he has declared regarding his providence providence is a beautiful subject to contemplate sometimes the word is misused and twisted but when it is viewed aright it is a glorious truth because as you are helped to do what the psalmist says whoso is wise and will observe these things even they shall understand the loving kindness of the

[35:07] Lord as you see how his providence is unfolded in its openings up in your life to do with you and with yours in your family circle wherein you get answers to prayer on their behalf who do you see sitting upon the throne then you not only see the Lord sitteth king but you see him who is Jehovah Jireh the Lord will provide yes much might be said from that viewpoint and he has declared bread shall be given water shall be sure I will make all my goodness to pass before thee and now to come just a little while to the second viewpoint of the subject the Lord sitteth upon the flood and now the flood that first of all burst forth was when the

[36:18] Adam fall took place very solemn it is to dwell in our thoughts upon the Adam fall sin entered into the world and death by sin and so death passed upon all men for that all have sinned and now that flood broke out in Eden's garden and the Lord God drove out the woman and the man and they went out into a world which was now under a curse and in which sin would spread like an overwhelming flood north south east and west and you and I are living in the last days and see much of the swelling of that flood all thou hideous monster sin what a curse hast thou brought in all creation groans through thee pregnant cause of misery but then even when sin bursts forth like a flood in

[37:32] Eden's garden the Lord made it plain that he was upon his throne and that he had a purpose to fulfill the Adam fall did not take the Lord by surprise no no what did God declare the seed of the woman shall bruise the serpent's head there is the evidence the Lord sitteth king and it was demonstrated in the fullness of time when the fullness of time was come God sent forth his own son made of a woman made under the law and he did love's redeeming work in every jot and tittle of it yes and that is why the throne of grace is established and God is approachable and you and

[38:33] I have the privilege to draw near to God and be made welcome and to find no sinner was ever yet empty sent back who came seeking mercy for Jesus sake but you find sin within you sometimes is the equivalent of a flood crowds of ill thoughts their band diffuse proud envious false unclean every ransacked corner shows an unsuspected sin and now what you want to realize then is that the Lord sitteth upon the flood how are you to know that truth and find the blessedness of it in your soul's experience listen if we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness and however much the flood may seem to be raging within you there is this word to help you all manner of sin shall be forgiven

[39:52] Jesus blood through earth and skies mercy eternal mercy cries then there is a flood sometimes which emanates from hell itself and there is a word which speaks about that in Isaiah when the enemy shall come in like a flood and that is when you are in heaviness through manifold temptations when it seems as though you were possessed of the devil and temptations soar afflict you from every viewpoint and you hardly know what you are or where you are in things divine then you do want to know the Lord sitteth king upon such a flood and blessed be his name he does go back to that word

[40:57] I have just quoted one half of it when the enemy shall come in like a flood the spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him yes what though Satan strong temptations come upon you as they do oh the Lord will appear on your behalf and make a way of escape and not suffer you to be undone as regards your religion your profession it is a wonderful mercy to have an interest in that scripture Peter penned who were kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time yes what those Satan strong temptations vex and tease you day by day and his sinful inclinations often fill you with dismay thou should conquer through the

[42:09] Lamb's redeeming blood and remember the Lamb is on the throne yes and he will make a way of escape for all his tempted people and not allow them to fall prey to sin and Satan and sink in the flood the Lord sitteth upon the flood yea the Lord sitteth king forever and now sometimes there may be let loose in the earth a flood of persecution and those who are taught of God who desire to be witnesses for him and his truth are hard put to it then to endure in their profession of his name because they are assailed by earth and hell and sometimes the enemies of God and godliness seem to be allowed to make quite a deal of headway but even then it still remains a blessed truth the

[43:14] Lord sitteth upon the flood and in his time he will say thus far shalt thou go and no further the Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly in such a time and in the time when persecution rages like a flood he will help them to show whose they are and whom they serve and then I can only give you hints to think of when you weigh the matter up when this sermon is ended affliction sometimes comes upon us and it is like a flood it may come on you and it may be such an affliction which brings you to a standstill in life's journey and you were conscious that you need divine aid to endure it and to see a gracious outcome from it afflictions make us see what else would escape our sight how vile and full of sin are we and

[44:32] God how pure and bright and now when affliction does come upon you or yours and it is like a flood oh how good it is if you can feel speedily the Lord sitteth upon the flood and if you can recognize his hand in the affliction coming upon you and not look to this or that which you might think has been the cause that you should be the subject of it the psalmist said let my soul live and it shall praise thee and let thy judgments help me and sometimes you can see when affliction comes into your life and it comes like a flood and threatens to sweep away much that you hold dear oh you do need divine aid you do need your eyes to be anointed with eyes that you may see the

[45:42] Lord is sitting upon the flood and he has a purpose to fulfill and when that purpose is brought to pass he will help you to say it is good for me that I have been afflicted that I might learn thy statutes much might be said along that line of thought then sometimes you have within you as it were a flood of fears you have many fears as to what you are where you are in things divine because you look back over the way you have come along and you cannot see the evidences that you know you have seen when you had better days in your soul's experience and that is a very painful experience to be the subject of and fears then arise as to whether after all you have got any religion that

[46:50] God is the author of whether you ought to have your name on a church roll if it is recorded there and then as you look back and these fears come upon you like a flood ifs and buts and hows then you look forward and you think of another flood that will come and in which you do desire to find the bottom to be good when you shall go down into it and it may be then as you think of the prospect of entering it my fears sometimes say I never shall find in death's gloomy day true peace to my mind eh but this is the word to help you and for you as grace is given to stay your mind upon the Lord sitteth upon the flood yea the Lord sitteth king forever and do remember this that every sinner taught of

[47:57] God when at length he comes to Jordan swearing each one every one does find the bottom to be good or they may not leave a dying testimony and I have sometimes thought too much importance has been placed upon people leaving a dying testimony the testimony is really in how one has lived before God and man a dying testimony is good to comfort those who mourn and who are left on the earth a while but if you look at it from the viewpoint of the word of God you will find the word of God says very little about a dying testimony it stresses that just shall live by faith and if they are helped to do it these all died in faith and now God has guaranteed to everyone who is a sinner born again as the good work begun is brought to a finish and they go down as I said into

[49:06] Jordan swelling each one will realize oh death where is thy sting oh grave where is thy victory and they would die in the Lord the Lord sitteth upon the flood yea the Lord sitteth king forever I might have touched upon but the time is gone how sometimes the world and the spirit of it breaks in upon us like a flood and undoes us as to being spiritually minded and you are flooded with carnal mindedness sometimes there is a flood that comes and it is just pride working within you and ambition and you pondering considering your own devices as to what you should be and what you should do but the great thing is for you and the preacher too to be brought to have to do with

[50:24] God where he sitteth king forever and as grace is given to do this cast thy burden upon the Lord and he shall sustain thee he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved amen God willing the pastor will preach on Wednesday evening mr.

[51:00] berlin and will see the union chapel on next Lord's day the pastor hopes to preach inside chapel and hope him number 1093 to st.
