Sermon, hymn, doxology
[0:00] With the Lord's help, I would like to direct your attention once again to the fourth chapter of John. That is the Gospel of John chapter 4, and we will again announce verse number 10 as our text.
[0:19] Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, give me to drink, thou wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
[0:35] The fourth chapter of John, verse 10. Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, give me to drink, thou wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
[0:53] This morning hour we tried to begin with some thoughts in this text, and of course dealt with somewhat about the narrative. We notice something here, friends, we see something of the aboundings of God's grace over the aboundings of sin.
[1:12] Certainly I trust, as we would know, if we knew this woman personally, and knew all of the circumstances we would have never given to that woman, as it were, one hope for eternal life.
[1:25] But isn't it a mercy, friends, that all of these things are hidden from our eyes? But it is a mercy, friends, that they are not hidden from the eyes of God.
[1:35] There is no soul so steeped in sin, of which the Lord Jesus cannot, by his might and by his grace, save unto the uttermost.
[1:48] This is one of those caricatures which was given by God to the Lord Jesus Christ, to redeem upon the face of this earth. And so this narrative is recorded, without a doubt, for the encouragement and the consolation of all of those who truly seek to be saved.
[2:07] We find that Jesus must go through the coast of Samaria. He was bound by his eternal love, and bound by that covenant promise which he gave unto the Father.
[2:18] And there he comes by this well, weary and worn. Finally, this woman, why, we don't know. And yet we do know, friends.
[2:31] Though in her unregenerate state, she was still drawn to this well, so that she might meet the Savior. We see that the Savior begin the conversation.
[2:42] The conversation was asking just for a drink of water. The woman was amazed at this Jew, asking she, a Samaritan, for a drink of water. And then Jesus put to this text to her, which we have tried to deal with somewhat to this morning hour, and hope with the Lord's help to finish it.
[3:04] Jesus answered and said unto her, Oh, here is something, friends. When the Lord speaks, he speaks with power. He didn't have to necessarily shout there to raise Lazarus from the dead.
[3:20] Neither did he have to shout. Did he have to try to with any force to impress her with any type of religion. Oh, friends, when the Lord speaks, he speaks with might and power.
[3:34] We find that Jesus then said unto this woman, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith unto me, Give me to drink.
[3:46] We notice then the first thing that Jesus sought to reveal to this woman was her ignorance. And as these examples here are not just private examples, friends, they are examples, in other words, how the Lord always deals with all of those whom he calls by grace.
[4:06] He brings us to a place to let us see that we are ignorant fools. And oh, remember this morning I said to you, Friend, what has blinded your eyes?
[4:18] Why is it, friend, that you do not ask for the salvation of your soul? Is it not that this world and tradition, malice, prejudice, hath blinded your eyes?
[4:31] And therefore you do not know what it is to really ask for the salvation of God. There may be a certain amount of prayer. There might be a certain amount of asking.
[4:42] But, friends, by nature we only ask for those things of which were proved to be pleasing to the flesh. So he exposed her ignorance.
[4:54] Oh, isn't it a mercy to come in the contact with the Lord Jesus Christ who reads all of the recesses of our hearts? To Nicodemus he brought out how that he must be born again.
[5:06] He had a religion, but he was resting upon his fleshly religion, upon his first birth. But he must be brought and stripped of all hope there and then come to the need of a second birth.
[5:20] This woman was totally ignorant. She had a religion which was after the fathers, but it never was a religion which was ordained to God, if thou knewest.
[5:35] Now, friends, we find here that the first place she had her ignorance and she knew not the gift of God. What is this gift of God?
[5:47] As I tried to mention this morning, friends, this gift of God actually can be summed up in a few words, and that is the Lord Jesus Christ. And if we look further upon the person of the Lord Jesus Christ, this gift then includes all that he has, that is the salvation of the soul.
[6:07] In other words, this gift then is salvation because it is Christ himself. So we see here that she was totally ignorant of this person, that is the Lord Jesus Christ.
[6:21] Now, friends, why was she so ignorant of this person? Because he veiled himself in flesh. And she did not recognize that he was the eternal Son of God.
[6:36] It's solemn, isn't it? But I just want to ask you a question, friend. Were all ignorant as to the person of the Lord Jesus Christ?
[6:48] Were there not those who were upon to the face of the earth who looked upon him in the days of his flesh? Was there naturally no beauty in him, no glory in him that they should desire him?
[7:00] How was it that some did believe, and how was it that some did embrace him like Simeon of old? Oh, friend, here we see the necessity of an eye of faith.
[7:12] The eye of faith, which is God's gift, is that which looks through the humanity or that of which veiled the deity of Christ, friends, and see that this is God-man.
[7:25] And actually the eye of faith rejoices in the fact that they see, how strange the sweat pouring from his brow. Faith actually rejoices in the fact that he was thirsty and that he was weary.
[7:40] Because this makes him all the more approachable for a weary and a weary and a sin-sick soul. Yes, this is something which faith is enabled to rejoice in.
[7:51] But she did not recognize that he was that gift. And if she did, she would have asked of him and he would have given him the living water.
[8:04] Now to begin with, friends, I would like to speak a little while. What is this living water? And then hoping that the Lord might so give you a hear to hear.
[8:15] And that you might know something of a living faith within your own heart and ask, as this woman was reproved because she didn't ask, but I'm sure the day come when she did ask, that you might ask for this living water.
[8:31] Now as the Lord Jesus seemed fit to make a comparison between that blessed gift or that salvation of which this living water represents and the temporal water of which was there in the well, I believe we could make some comparisons, friends, between that of which is the natural use of water and that of which is needed for the good of our never-dying soul.
[8:57] First of all, friends, that water naturally which we have is God's gift. It is God which hath given us the water, the pure water of which we are unable to drink.
[9:11] And so it was of God's love and mercy and of his great grace that he did send forth his only beloved Son, who was the greatest of all gifts.
[9:23] Oh, to some of you parents who have your beloved little children, older, whatever the case they are, you love them. And even your own heart would almost break sometimes as if to think of something should come upon them and they would be snatched away by the cold hand of death.
[9:40] And especially if you know something of grace in your own soul, how hard it would be then as if you would think to have to part with some of your own loved ones and then to feel they might go in their unconverted state.
[9:53] But oh, do we realize the nature of God's love? In order to show that love unto Abraham of old, he told him to offer his own beloved Son, the only one he had of whom all of the promises were set upon, the joy of that home.
[10:11] Oh, friends, there must have been something of which we can't comprehend. I realize God is so great and so far off sometimes in our feelings and in our interpretations, we cannot comprehend it.
[10:24] But the Word of God clearly tells us that it was a gift. It was something of which in a measure rent to the heart of God the Father when he departed of that of which was found in his bosom, his own beloved Son.
[10:39] It was a gift. But a gift really shines, friends, when we find who is the recipients of the gift. Oh, we love to give gifts to persons whom we love.
[10:53] I realize the Father loved the Church and he gave his Son for it. But if we stop to realize what wretched, vile things we were by nature, can you comprehend that?
[11:07] They're loathing in the wallowing of your own blood and of your own sin. Yes, while we were yet sinners, while we were yet in our unconverted state, God's love was unchangeable in its nature and he gave that gift of his own Son.
[11:25] Further also, friends, rain is that or the water is that of which descends from heaven. I realize there is the wells of a bubbling up. I realize there is water in the earth.
[11:38] But if there is no more rain which comes down from heaven, friends, it doesn't take long and the rivers and the creeks, the wells and the lakes will soon dry up and come to naught. Oh, this heavenly gift which is the eternal, which is living water, is that of which came from heaven.
[12:00] Yes, heaven itself. There was no man. There was nothing here upon the face of the earth of which could save their soul. Moses' prayers were acceptable, but yet, friends, they couldn't save even the best of the disciples, the most glorious person that ever was upon to the face of the earth, yea, even angels.
[12:21] No, it must come from heaven. Oh, do you realize you must have a religion which is from above? Do you ever realize and pray in your own prayers that he might give you that living water of which is not from this earth, which grows not from the flesh nor from this cursed earth, but is that of which comes from descends freely and sovereignly from above?
[12:48] Again, water, friends, is that of which is of absolute necessity. There's many things which we could get along without, and I suppose there's some things, friends, it would be good if we didn't have.
[13:00] Some luxuries, some pleasures, friends, are only the damnation of many souls. But this water of life, friends, is something which is necessary.
[13:11] Unless we have a little sip and a little part of this water of life, which is perpetual in its nature, of which I hope to deal with in a few moments, friends, we shall eternally perish.
[13:22] It is needful. Oh, I think of the Lord Jesus on one occasion, she says to Mary, to Martha, this one thing is needful, and Mary hath this good part.
[13:37] It is needful for time, yes, but needful for eternity, that water of life. Then again, water is a universal need.
[13:49] Yes, water is needed here in England and throughout the whole of the universe, or at least the whole of our earth. And so, friends, there is but one salvation.
[14:01] There is no name given upon the face of the earth whereby men might be saved, but in the name of Jesus. Yes, those that are persecuted there in Russia, friends, their only salvation is found in Jesus.
[14:14] The Jew, he may have his religion, he may be called to the people of God by a nation, but if he hath never come to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, friends, he shall eternally perish.
[14:25] Even the most religious church member, whatever the case might be, if he has not come to this one name of Jesus, he shall eternally perish. Again and again, we see that the theme of the apostle was believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.
[14:42] Yes, there is only one way of escape. There is only one city of refuge, which is Christ. So we see there is that universal redemption in that way, I mean, in that fact, I mean, that there is only one person which can save the souls of sinners.
[15:04] Then also, friends, we all know what reviving water does upon the face of this earth. We could use some rain. And what a shower does. Remember this spring when we had rain after rain, how green things were.
[15:18] everything seemed to be lustered. Everything was growing beautiful. And so, friends, this water of life, oh, what blessing it does to the soul.
[15:30] What a reviving it does when the Lord blesses you and gives you a little glimpse of the Lord Jesus Christ, gives you a little glimpse of that blessed salvation he provided through his dear son.
[15:43] Oh, doesn't that revive? Isn't that blessed to you? Oh, when is not that what would more bless your soul to you who have your plague of sin to have the Lord Jesus say unto you like he did to that man of old, son, thy sins be forgiven thee.
[16:01] Or to that woman who was found in the very act of adultery, woman, neither do I commend them thee. Go in peace. Go in sin no more. And so, we find many things how that we would only love to have.
[16:15] And what a reviving it is. You know, sometimes God's people, and if I'm going to speak for myself, friends, seem to go on very low race ration.
[16:26] And sometimes we seem to go quite a while. Not to any, and I don't want to try to promote this business of saying, we'll only have one or two sometimes tokens the whole of your life. Friends, go away with that religion.
[16:38] Let's have a token of the Lord every day. And let us wrestle with him that he might give us something every day. I know it don't come, but let us seek to live that way. And I'm quite a poor one to preach this way, but yet it's my desire.
[16:53] But, oh, friends, I know, in the way I feel now, if the Lord would come in some sweetness, and once again, as it were, overpower my own soul, and come and speak like he has in time past, and open up some precious truth, and apply it with might and power, friends, I feel I could live upon it forever.
[17:12] And it is then, friends, when our soul is revived, weakened as it were, everything takes its proper order, doesn't it? Even when the Lord sometimes gives us a little hope and a promise, a little opening in prayer, you know, all of that, friend, is upon the ground of pardoning grace.
[17:31] It would be another seal to our own heart that our sins are forgiven. Yes, what a reviving it is. And it is a blessed reviving. And then, friends, the water, naturally, friends, is something we never weary of.
[17:50] Have you drank on some things and you say, well, I don't want that for a while. No, one cup is enough. But there's something about water. In one respect, I suppose, tasteless, naturally, as it is, except for the minerals which are found in the face of this earth, or which come down.
[18:06] But naturally, it's quite tasteless in its nature. But yet, there's something about it which is always refreshing. We never tire of it.
[18:19] Oh, friend to you, our young friend, if God ever touches your soul and gives you a living appetite and a thirst for the things of God and his salvation, you shall never tire of it.
[18:33] Yes, the evidence is not only coming to the means of grace, that isn't sufficient in itself, but you will come with a desire, a prayer, and a longing.
[18:45] Oh, to have one drop. Then again, the distilling of water upon the face of the earth is very sovereign in its nature. There are some places upon the face of the earth, and I assure our young friends know it by school, that there's hardly ever a drop of water falling upon it.
[19:05] The desert there is only a dry desert place. Nothing can grow. The wind blows upon the sand and never water falls upon it. And yet, there are other places in this country which has a great amount of waterfall.
[19:20] It has rain, and we read of the rainforest where it seems almost continually every day there's a shower upon it. Yes, God is sovereign, isn't it? Yes, he drops some drops of blessing and rain upon one soul, and he passes by another one and he drops it upon there.
[19:38] God is not unjust in his sovereignty in these things. Remember, friend, that God would be just as if he never gave anybody a drop. But it is all by his free and sovereign grace that he pours out these little blessings of his salvation here and there upon certain individuals.
[19:56] O young friend and older ones alike, may you take that hymn sometimes we have heard sung, Pass me not, O gentle Savior, hear my humble cry, while on others thou art calling, do not pass me by.
[20:14] O is that a concern with you, young friend? Do you fear sometimes that he might pass you by and take this one and that one and lead you to perish in your sin? Oh, but remember there about that blessed illustration which God gave there in the prophecy of Zechariah where he puts the picture of there is the brand in the fire.
[20:38] Yes, there is a stick laying in the fire blazing and the fire is about to consume that stick. It's dead, it has no light, but the marvelous there is the master comes and he takes that stick and he brings it out and by the very touching of that stick it becomes a living tree, a living stick.
[20:58] There it was only fit for the burning, but God's grace is such, it passes by even all barriers. As we see the grace of God we notice this morning passed by the barrier of this Samaritan woman.
[21:13] Oh, friend, do not look upon the barriers and think because I have not been born of a godly parent, I have not been brought up unto the truth, or that I have sinned too great and therefore this salvation can never come to me.
[21:26] Oh, rejoice in the sovereignty of God and bestowing his blessings, pouring out his rain here and there. Beg that the Lord might shower upon you some of that great salvation which he gives so sovereignly and freely.
[21:42] Now I realize there in this case, friends, this well was necessarily not near. The woman had to come from the city and go out to the city and draw from the well.
[21:54] But friends, this salvation is near. It is near unto all of those who call upon thee. We don't have to go to any great depths to dig for this water.
[22:06] Neither do we have to go to some great heights in order to obtain this salvation. This salvation is near. It is the day of grace. It is a God which gives us and he is ever near.
[22:19] He is not in far off of place, friends, but he is omnipotent in his power, omnipresent and omniscient in his nature. So it is ever near. Then, friends, it is abundantly.
[22:32] We read there in another portion of the book of John where the Lord Jesus speaks about that well and about that water of life where he says, and they shall give him unto the waters of life and out of his belly, notice, shall flow rivers of living water.
[22:50] Notice the expression, rivers of living water. Again, he says, I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
[23:03] Furthermore, he says, and I come that they might have life and that they might have it more, that they might have it very sparingly.
[23:15] that isn't what the word says. It says that they might have it more abundantly. Oh, how often haven't we quoted about that precious text, which is found in Zechariah, in that day shall a fountain be opened.
[23:32] Not a well, a fountain, a fountain which bubbles ever clear. It's an abundant and it washes away. what does it do?
[23:43] It washes away all of the curse, all of the filth. It is opened for sin and unclean. Now, friend, how sad if that scripture said that fountain shall be opened for the righteous, for those that are cleansed and for those that are holy.
[24:00] No, it says for the sin and uncleanness, so that they might plunge themselves in that fountain which is open for such characters as that, so that they might come washed.
[24:13] We notice there in the reading of Revelation about that fountain of which was opened and I look upon that pure river of water, there is the waters of God's eternal love and there we read there and it will wash away all of the curse.
[24:29] There in Ezekiel we have something of the same nature and there upon that throne was the waters of life and I like the description that Ezekiel gives of it and he says as one went up to that fountain or to that stream to that river he found it there was up to the ankles and then it was up to the knee and then it was up to the loins and then he found it was waters to swim in such was the abundance.
[24:55] All that to the waters went it cured all the curse and it made all the trees grow and it washed all away the curse of the nation of Israel which was a type and a figure.
[25:06] Oh isn't this precious fountain isn't this a living fountain yes it washes away all of the sins it softens the stony heart it is perpetual in its nature because there is no limit to it it ever flows because it flows from the all sufficient God let us notice the words of our text if thou knewest the gift of God and who it is that saith to thee give me to drink thou was asked of him and he would have given thee living water this woman didn't understand and I want to deal now how that the Lord finally worked with this woman and revealed himself to her I believe these questions of which this woman asked were not something to detain and put away the Savior you know friends I once used to believe because I was taught wrongly by somebody else that she tried to change the subject oh God doesn't work that way in the soul when he once began to work into this woman he created an interest an inquiring mind she now has become a seeker with all of her ignorance the woman says the well is deep and thou hast nothing to draw with how canst thou give me living water she looked for living water from the things of this life she thought from this well maybe he can bring me living water and then she says art thou greater than our father
[26:43] Jacob who gave us this water oh I think some people so cling to the religion of their fathers how often we hear and I know it's good in a point I hope that in generations some of our young friends might say I was brought up in that church my grandfather my father and other generations were all found there but I hope you can say it out of a love to the truth not out of tradition that's nothing at all I wondered if the woman was living a little bit on tradition I'm sure she was but notice how these questions were asked and how that the Lord in his love and his mercy did not reprove her harshly he will not always chide he will he shows his grace even in the answering of these questions art thou greater and then Jesus wanted to make a comparison between that well and the living waters yes if you drink of this water of this well of which you are yet looking for in this life to satisfy your thirst ye shall have to come again and again and the time will come when you shall die but that water which
[27:59] I give oh friend can you take a hope in that word give in other words it is without merit and it is without price I give it freely out of my abundance this water that I give shall you shall never thirst that is you shall never die of thirst and so the water that I shall give thee shall be in thee a well of water springing up unto everlasting life in other words eternity eternity in other words that of which I give you that religion of which I'm about to show to you is an eternal religion our little friends no doubt have heard me often use this illustration I used to use it in the teaching of Sunday school remember there there is a line drawn that is when you are born and when you die I hope young friend that that line is long enough so that you might have salvation I know the appointment is of God and I hope that you might never be snatched away with a hand of death and only have a little short life like recently that little boy died of only four years of age ushered into eternity as to the state of his soul
[29:16] I leave that in the hands of a good and a gracious God but friends there is a line drawn which is the beginning and the end but then we entered into eternity and that is a large circle little children draw a circle sometime and take your pencil and try to find the end of the circle there is no end and such is eternity but this water which Jesus gives which is salvation to the soul it is an everlasting life it is eternal life it is a fountain which will ever bubble within you it is something which will never die and this is what we need for that long eternity to be able to praise him for saving grace so we see it shall be an everlasting life the woman saith unto him sir I perceive that thou art a prophet she began to realize excuse me I overlooked one point so when
[30:19] Jesus said after this woman this woman said sir give me this water now friends to those who ask to be given this water they're going to receive it this woman said sir give me this water I don't believe she understood the full extent she might have been mixing up something of the spiritual with the natural as well I believe something stirred within her own heart what is this remember the waters of life were often referred to in the Old Testament and she had some knowledge of these things I'm not saying that she was only looking for material things sometimes it is a combination of things now again to those who ask they are going to receive but friend you will not receive the waters of life when you yet are clinging to the things of this world or to your secret sins they are going to be taken out first this is what we find next in our answers and the
[31:26] Jesus says unto her go call thine husband and come hither I want you to notice two words the word go and the word come the word go is part of the law work but the come is part of the gospel go call thine husband Jesus now comes to the root of her sin he will not there dwell in the heart with sin and with corruption and evil because when the Lord enters in friends it goes and there is the necessity of a law work knowing your sin but notice Jesus just didn't say go call thine husband but she said go call thine husband and come hither now now by now go call thine husband he exposed the nature of her sin and she says I have no husband and
[32:27] Jesus says thou hast well said and then he went on to expose the corruptions of her heart and of her sin she is now being brought to see the sifting of her sin and there can be no compromise there with God over the sin you aren't going to hold to the world and hold to God I realize we're still sinners and maybe some said oh then I'm finished I'm such a wretched sinner I fall and I fall continually I know but yet friends there's a mercy that God is able to overcome all of the sharpest and the strongest of sin and he will deal with it but he deals with it in his love and his mercy unto his own if he would deal with us according to his justice friends we would all be consumed into the confines of hell so she says go and come said Jesus he exposed her sin then the woman begins to question about worship and then she says sir
[33:28] I perceive that thou art a prophet oh it is good when we are perceiving that Christ is a prophet when we begin to realize that he himself is beginning to teach us in our own soul and so she says our fathers worship in this mountain but ye say that in Jerusalem is the place for mountains where we worship Jesus saith unto her woman the hour cometh when ye shall neither in this mountain nor yet at Jerusalem worship the father ye know ye worship ye know not what we know what we worship for salvation is of the Jews Jesus brought this to her that your so called of worshiping in this mountain is an abomination in the sight of God hath the Lord ever cut off your so called of worship friend
[34:28] I'm glad that you come here and always come come Wednesday come with a prayer ask the Lord that he might bring you to the fountain of living water don't stay away young and old make it your point to come to the means of grace and prayer and the word of God every opportunity use it to find your find the way of salvation but yet have you come to the end of all hope of worship that in itself the outward form of worship is not sufficient what is worship friends a broken and a contrite spirit I will not despise and so he cut across her worship true salvation was of the Jew because Christ was a Jew and it was given to them first and also to the others theirs were salvation stems but Jesus went on to speak but Jesus went on to speak but the hour coming that now is when the true worshiper shall worship the father in spirit and in truth for the father seeketh such to worship him friend it would be a great length to speak about what is true worship in that particular statement Christ says that worship is in the spirit in other words anything which is of the flesh is not worship now we have a nice place a very suitable place of worship but friend if we had to meet in a barn if the Lord was there there we would worship God if we met in the most ornate cathedral upon the face of the earth and the Lord wasn't there we've got nothing all this so-called fleshly worship friends is an abomination in the sight of God why can I speak this way friends because I was brought to see it for myself all that outward performative special music all the choirs with all of their robes and with all of their adornment and all of their special just look at all they flimsy they fix up themselves like a bunch of Jezebels oh that isn't worshiping God oh it's that soul who knows something of a broken and a contrite spirit who trembled at his word they are that which is of the spirit have the spirit quickened your soul do you have a fleshly religion or a spiritual religion is there something of which works out of your own soul you can do no different than pray and worship and call upon the God with confession of sin and looking on to him for that salvation of which you want to apply to your own heart and all the outward forms of religion there becomes an abomination and sinful to you yes friend I walked it out
[37:16] I know what I'm talking about I'd be ashamed to have to tell some of our young friends how far I went in some of that earthly and carnal religion I was caught up in it you wouldn't hardly believe it today but it is the truth yes it was brought to be sin to me abominable but anyways let's get back here but I just merely say that friends to show you tell you that I have walked this out that's why I warn you against it but nevertheless God is a spirit and they that worship him will worship him in spirit and in truth truth I am a sinner I need Jesus there's the sum and the substance of truth we can branch off on it into many branches and then we read here the woman said I know that Messiah is coming which is called Christ even he has come he will tell us all things
[38:16] I believe now her heart is beginning to open when Messiah comes she had heard about the coming of the Messiah but no doubt up until this time she never desired that he would come but now something strangely took place in her heart she wanted the Messiah she wanted the Christ and oh friends if anybody wants the Christ and desires that Messiah which is promised to the Father he will show himself he's going to reveal himself now with my few remarks friends how can you see thus far how that Christ is making room for himself now the time has come when Christ will reveal himself he waits to be gracious though the visionary friend wait for it it'll come he will not always chide he will not always be angry he will not always hide himself he is like that blessed Joseph he cannot contain himself too long he's got to reveal himself to his brother he bids all others depart and like Joseph of old he says I am Joseph your brother what a word your brother flesh and blood
[39:40] I came down from this world your brother I am Joseph come near to me can you see how this beautifully sets forth the revelation of Christ to your soul is not that which you desire friend oh that Jesus would say I am Jesus I am your brother I am your brother born for adversity I was born under the law I was born under the flesh I am Joseph I am Jesus and so she says when I know I love this I know that when the Messiah cometh which is called Christ he shall tell us all things do you believe that I think there's some here this evening hour who do believe it but you know what you want as well as I once did want to
[40:42] I want him to speak and then notice the words which Jesus said Jesus said unto her I that speak unto thee am he as Jesus spoke to you friend has he in some measure brought out your ignorance and exposed your heart has he read your heart and exposed what you are notice how this the Savior worked with this woman he exposed her ignorance he showed her there was something far more than the waters of life there's the waters of eternal life he also exposed some of her secret sins go call thine husband but come and she says I have no husband and then the Lord revealed further her sins and she did come she come with her acknowledgement of sin and then we realize then the Lord exposed her false worship that the worshipping of the flesh and the attending to the mere means of grace is never sufficient and then he said then she says about the Messiah
[42:04] I know I know isn't that something we say sometime in those early days I know and I'll put it in in other words not that I ever want to alter the word of God but I know if Jesus comes and if he reveals himself to me then I know I'll understand he'll make it clear but friend it is Jesus it was him all of the time like the two that walked on the way to the Emmaus and he revealed himself to them then were they glad when they saw the Lord would that make your soul glad friend it would mine and it has made glad some here and I would that all of us would be glad there is nothing that shears the heart like Jesus and then he says I that speak unto thee and he yes it is I be not afraid for may the Lord add his own blessing to his own precious word for his dear name say
