Glad when going into the house of the Lord. (Quality: Very good)

[0:00] As the Lord shall be pleased to help me, I shall call your attention to a subject you will find in Psalm 122, verses 1 and 2.

[0:16] I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord. Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem.

[0:34] Psalm 122, verses 1 and 2. I do hope that quite a number of you can add an amen to this declaration of the Selmist long ago.

[1:02] And that you do know what that experience is, to be glad to go into the house of the Lord.

[1:17] And feel therein as you like to feel. It is good for me to draw near unto God.

[1:29] And it might be, well, in approaching the subject, to weigh up as to what is your attitude to the house of the Lord.

[1:43] It might help you, some of you, to come to some sure conclusion that you have been made to differ from the world at large.

[1:56] If you can indeed adopt the language of David, I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.

[2:08] I have no doubt whatever that many of you can remember when you did not feel glad to go. But you had to go.

[2:20] Parental discipline made you go. And you found it irksome. And it could even be some of you listening to the pastor at the present time.

[2:31] Feel it to be so. And just want the amen to come and set you going where you feel more as you want to feel.

[2:44] According to how you were born. Where you can be after the flesh. The things of the flesh. Oh, but if a sinner has the great mercy to be born again.

[2:58] He finds then that the house of the Lord takes a special place in his life from that time on. And it takes the first place.

[3:13] A sinner born again wants a spiritual home. Where he can gather with other people taught of God.

[3:25] And as grace is given, worship God aright therein. I can never understand any sinner born again who is not concerned to have a spiritual home.

[3:42] And to feel like the hymn writer says. Here would I dwell while others go and come.

[3:55] No more a stranger or a guest. But like a child at home. And now in looking at the setting of the subject that might be helpful to you.

[4:07] And it is a psalm of David. And it is a striking psalm. Because David was inspired by the Spirit of God to record it.

[4:20] When God had given to David a revelation. That the center of Israel's worship. Was to be in Jerusalem.

[4:30] And that all Israel dwelling in the land of promise. Should recognize Jerusalem as that center.

[4:42] And live their lives in the light of that truth. Long years before it was said by Moses.

[4:53] And God inspired him to say it. Three times a year. Shall all thy males appear before the Lord thy God.

[5:05] In the place which he shall choose. In the feast of unleavened bread. And in the feast of weeks. And in the feast of tabernacles. And they shall not appear before the Lord empty.

[5:18] Every man shall give as he is able. According to the blessing of the Lord thy God. Which he hath given thee. It is well to remember.

[5:31] That as you read. All to do with the ritual of the Mosaic law. Concerning how Israel of old were to live in their wilderness wanderings.

[5:42] That God. Goes beyond their wanderings. To when they as a people should be instated. In the land of promise. And so.

[5:53] That word. Recorded by Moses. Is now at length. Fulfilled. And. Godly David. Has the revelation given to him.

[6:07] That Jerusalem. Must be the center of Israel's worship. And. That there should be a house built for him. And in that house he will condescend to make his presence known.

[6:21] The Lord dwelleth in Zion. Here will I dwell. For I have desired it. I will abundantly bless her provision.

[6:32] I will satisfy her poor with bread. In between. In between. While. The ark of the covenant. Which was then. As it were. The center of Israel's worship.

[6:44] Move from one place. To another. Sometimes. It stayed a long while in one place. And not a very long while. In another. But now. It was to have a.

[6:56] Rest in place. And there was to be. The house of the Lord. In Jerusalem. And now Jerusalem. Is a.

[7:07] Type. Of the church. Of Christ. And it is well to remember. Let all our dear young people remember it especially. That.

[7:19] In Old Testament times. When Israel dwelt in the land of promise. All the Israelite males above 20 years of age. Had to go up to Jerusalem to worship.

[7:32] On those. Appointed. Times. Which I read to you. From the book of. Deuteronomy. And.

[7:44] This is how God. Speaks of it. Thrice in the year. Shall all your men children. Appear before the Lord God. The God of Israel.

[7:57] For I will cast out the nations before thee. And enlarge thy borders. Neither. Shall any man desire thy land. When thou shalt go up to appear before the Lord thy God.

[8:11] Thrice in. The year. God gave to those. Israelites in going up to worship. His own guarantee. Thus saith the law. If you attend to my business.

[8:25] The worship of my holy majesty. I will look after your business. And see it goes on well at home. While you are absent. And that law.

[8:36] Has never been abrogated. Although. You and I have no such lengths to go. As to journey to. A stated. Center of worship.

[8:46] Like Jerusalem was. In the land of promise. But the underlying principle. The principle. Remains a blessed reality. Fear him. Ye saints.

[8:57] And you will then. Have nothing else to fear. Make you his service. Your delight. Your wants. Shall be. His. Care. And now that is the setting of the subject.

[9:10] God. And. Godly David. Had made this known to. Israel as. A nation. And as it was revealed to David.

[9:21] By the spirit of God. So also. The spirit of God. Made it to be at that time. Acceptable. To Israel as. A nation.

[9:33] So that. All Israel. Were made. Glad. In the prospect. Of it. And so. Godly David. Was inspired. To pen the psalm.

[9:44] Before us. I was glad. When they said unto me. Let us go into the house. Of the Lord. Our feet shall stand.

[9:55] Within thy gates. O Jerusalem. And now I come back. To the starting point. Where does the house. Of the Lord. Come in your life.

[10:07] Some of you say. I do believe. I have felt many times. Like David. When he said. I was glad. And I have known.

[10:18] What it is to be glad. I have likewise. Known. What it is to be sad. When I have gone. And in the worship of God. I seem to obtain.

[10:30] No help. No word in season. No comfort. No light. On the dealings of God. With me. And I went on my way.

[10:41] Cast down. And disappointed. For the want of him. Do remember this. What made you feel sad. Is just the same principle.

[10:51] In you. That will make you feel glad. And they that sow in tears. Shall reap in joy. You could not know that sadness.

[11:03] Unless you were a sinner born again. Remember that. Boast not ye sons of earth. A look with scornful eyes.

[11:14] Above your highest mirth. Our saddest hours we prize. For though our cup seems filled with gall. There's something secret. Sweetens all.

[11:26] And now I want to look at this. As it respects. The church of Christ. On the earth. At the present time. And the word of God says.

[11:38] Whatsoever things were written aforetime. Were written for our learning. That we through comfort. And patience in the scriptures. Might have hope.

[11:50] I was glad. When they said unto me. Let us go into the house of the Lord. Our feet shall stand within thy gates.

[12:01] O Jerusalem. And the dear psalmist goes on. And I do like this viewpoint of truth. Jerusalem is builded.

[12:13] As a city. That is compact. Together. All the suburbs were united to the city. Itself. And it made one.

[12:25] Vast city. Jerusalem. And so it is with the church of Christ. All over the world. There are varied peoples.

[12:36] In varied countries. Whom the spirit of God has wrought upon. And they worship God a right. But they may not be. And they are not. Often.

[12:46] Not exactly according to. Our church order. Yet at the same time. They are compact together. In those things which are. Of supreme importance.

[12:58] And eternal moment. And they are all. In agreement. In this. Neither is there salvation. In any other.

[13:09] There is given unto heaven. Among men. None other name. Whereby. We can. Be saved. And you will find. That wherever they are.

[13:20] They want to go up. To the house of the Lord. To worship. As it is recorded here. Whither. The tribes. Go up.

[13:31] The tribes of the Lord. Unto the testimony of Israel. And now. Do see. What is a very important part. Of the worship of God. To give thanks.

[13:43] Unto. The name. Of. The Lord. O. How good it is. When you get grace. And you can.

[13:54] Do it. The psalmist says. Also. In. Another psalm. And I hope many of you. Will agree with him. Therein.

[14:04] A psalm. Or song for the Sabbath day. It is a good thing. To give thanks. Unto the Lord. And to sing praises. Unto thy name. O.

[14:15] Most high. To show forth. Thy loving kindness. In the morning. And thy faithfulness. Every. Night. Yes.

[14:26] But let us look. At this subject. As I view it. As a type of the church of Christ. And it is evident. The psalmist. Felt within.

[14:38] What I like to feel. I hope you do too. A solemn. Determination. Our feet. Shall stand.

[14:49] Within thy gates. O Jerusalem. And now. Jerusalem. Had gates. Open ye the gates.

[14:59] That the righteous. Nation. Which keepeth the truth. May enter in. In those gates. Was where the business. Often was done.

[15:09] By they that dwelt therein. As you can read. In an earlier history of it. In the book of Ruth. Boaz.

[15:20] When he desired. To go forward. In the matter. Regarding Ruth. He went. To the gate. Of the city. Bethlehem. Where he dwelt.

[15:31] And there. He found. The nearer kinsmen. And they sat down there. And the business was. Conducted. Before. Witnesses. Gathered.

[15:42] Together. So that. You must understand. That these gates. Are gates of entrance. Whereby. You can do business.

[15:54] In heaven's own marketplace. You know how often. The pastor uses that phrase. And you reduce it to practice too. For it is good to do business.

[16:04] In heaven's marketplace. And gain. By trading. There. And I will look first of all. At just a few. Of these gates.

[16:18] Our feet shall stand within. Thy gates. O Jerusalem. And every sinner born again. Everyone.

[16:29] Everyone. Who has the mercy. To be following on. To know the Lord. Will be concerned. To stand in these gates. Which the word of God. Makes plain. And now.

[16:40] How about this gate. Enter ye in. At the straight gate. Oh. How the Savior. Made that plain.

[16:52] Straight is the gate. And narrow is the way. That leadeth unto life. And few there be. That find it. And now. That is just what. Many of you.

[17:03] As you gather together. To worship God. Are concerned to do. You hope. You are born again. Sometimes. You feel quite sure. About it. But you are not always sure.

[17:16] And you desire. To enter anew. Anew. In your soul's feelings. Through that straight gate. And be confirmed. In your soul. That you are.

[17:27] A sinner. Born again. Assure my conscience. Overpart. In thee. Redeemer's blood. And bear the witness. With my heart. That I am born of God.

[17:38] Our feet shall stand. Within thy gates. And oh. How often a sinner born again. Dost stand. In that straight gate.

[17:50] As it were. If so be. He can find in his soul. What he wants. To realize. That he has entered therein. And that it is well.

[18:01] With his soul. And remember. When you are old. And grey headed. You still desire. To enter. In that gate.

[18:12] In your soul's experience. Lord decide. The doubtful case. Thou who art. Thy people's son. Shine upon the work of grace.

[18:23] If indeed it be begun. And now. The psalmist says. In another psalm. I will go in. To the gates of.

[18:35] Righteousness. And now. You will find many sinners. Concerned to enter into the gate of righteousness.

[18:46] When they are born again. Because they are made painfully. Solemnly aware. That their own righteousness. Is of no avail.

[18:57] Whatever wherein to appear. Before God. Oh. How they strive to enter in. And that is a right striving. Proceeding from life divine.

[19:11] And remember. The saviour said. Strive to enter in. At the straight gate. And you will see. The margin reading is. Agonize.

[19:21] To enter in. It is not easy. It is not easy. To do it. But you need. Divine aid. And you will not feel as you want to feel.

[19:32] Until you get. That grace given. To do it. And one thing. You will. Want. Made very plain. Naked. I come to thee for dress.

[19:45] Helpless look to thee for grace. And now. There the hymn writer. Was before the gate of righteousness. Desiring. To enter in.

[19:55] And appear before him. Who is Jehovah. Said. Kine you. The Lord our. Righteousness. Oh. It is good.

[20:06] To stand. Within. The gate of. Righteousness. And to. Hear those. Wondrous words. Take his filthy garments off.

[20:18] Clothing with a change of raiment. And to feel. That you were made. Righteous. Before God. With the. Righteousness. Which is of God.

[20:30] By faith. In Jesus Christ. I can only give you hints. About these gates. And now another gate. Is the gate of communion. And I hope you enter into that gate.

[20:42] Every day. Enter into it. As often as you can. Be it night. Or day. As grace is given. I like to think of.

[20:53] Of the gate of communion. As being. The beautiful gate. Of the temple. And you know. The lame man. Was found there. And. The apostles.

[21:04] When they saw him. They were helped of God. To do him good. He was found. At the beautiful gate. Of the temple. With his case. And the Lord. Appeared on his behalf.

[21:15] Without him asking for it. There you see. Sovereign grace. Or sin. Abounding. Yes.

[21:26] Oh. But how good it is. To enter into. The gate of. Communion. Sweet communion. Which charms the soul.

[21:37] And gives true peace. And joy. When you can say. With Asaph. It is good for me. To draw near. Unto. God.

[21:48] When you feel. You do not always feel it. But when you do feel. To get. Access. To God. Sometimes you seem. To stand without the gate.

[22:01] And. Your petitions. Are words. Words. Well put together. It may be. But you cannot feel. Out of the abundance.

[22:11] Of the heart. The mouth. Is speaking. Like you can. When the spirit of God. Indites. Your petitions. From.

[22:22] Within. Oh. Godly David. Knew much of what it was. To do business. In the gate of. Communion. And he says.

[22:32] Blessed be God. For he hath heard. My prayer. And turned away. His mercy. From me. And he says. In one cell.

[22:44] I give myself. Unto prayer. The margin. Is. According to what. Godly scholars. Tell us. I am all prayer. Not that he was.

[22:59] Having a. Spate of words. Flowing. To express. What his feelings. Were. Prayer. But. He was so concerned. Within. With thoughts.

[23:10] Longings. Wishes. Desires. And that which could not be expressed. In words. That the dear man says. I am all prayer. And that is a great experience.

[23:24] To enter into. Our feet. Shall stand within thy gates. Oh Jerusalem. But then there is a word like this. Which must not be overlooked.

[23:37] Thou shalt call thy walls. Salvation. And thy gates. Praise. And now dear friends.

[23:48] Maybe preacher and people alike. Must plead guilty here. That we know. Alas. All too little. About entering into. The gates. Of praise.

[23:59] And yet. Every day. How deep is our indebtedness. To God. In him we live and move. And have our being. And every day.

[24:10] This word is fulfilled. To you. And to me. I am the Lord. I change not. Therefore. Ye sons of Jacob. Are not consumed.

[24:21] When the psalmist. Was helped to do this. When the dear man. Did enter into the. Gates of praise. What did he say. Blessed be God.

[24:33] Who daily. Loadeth us. With benefits. And that is just how God deals with you. Preacher and people alike. Oh that you and I.

[24:45] More often. Could out of the abundance. Of the heart. Find the mouth. To be speaking. And showing forth. His praise. Oh give thanks unto the Lord.

[24:58] For he is good. For his mercy endureth forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord. Say so. Our feet.

[25:10] The feet of our faith. Shall stand within thy gates. Oh Jerusalem. And I might just name. There are the gates of worship.

[25:24] And you know what you ask God to do for you. When you come up to worship him. And you bow your head. Before the service. Commences.

[25:35] You desire. That you might worship God aright. A. You want to enter into this.

[25:46] View of the subject. Our feet. Shall stand within. Thy gates. Oh Jerusalem. You want your soul. To know what it is.

[25:57] To be glad. My meditation of him. Shall be sweet. I will be glad. In the Lord. And you know dear friends.

[26:09] Although you may not sometimes. Have anything very outstanding. Yet in the worship of God. As you enter into the gates. Of it. You get relief.

[26:22] And you know. Many of you. You godly business men. You husband men. You godly fathers.

[26:33] And you toil worn mothers. And housewives. How glad you were felt. When at length. You were being found. In the house of the Lord. And you could sit down.

[26:44] As it were. Before God. And for just a little while. Forget things. Which had been perplexing you. Harassing you. Burdening you. And you were found.

[26:55] In the worship of God. Although it may be. You got nothing. Something special. That you could speak about. Yet in your soul. There came. A holy. Gracious. Calm.

[27:05] A sweet relief. And you could say. Lord. It is good for us. To be here. And that is what the psalmist means. I was glad.

[27:16] When they said unto me. Let us go into the house of the Lord. And I just had a comment. You may sometimes.

[27:27] Have a kind of special impression. On your mind. That you want to go up to the house of the Lord. It might not be. Union Chapel. It might be some other house of the Lord.

[27:38] In weekday life. Where it is possible. You can be. And worship God there. And if you get. A feeling like that. Whatever you do. Don't you set it aside.

[27:51] Whatever the devil may suggest about it. As grace is given. Do you heed it. And do you aim. To say with the psalmist. Our feet shall stand.

[28:04] Within thy gates. O Jerusalem. And you will find this. You will know what it is to be made glad. When you go like that.

[28:16] You will know every one of them. In Zion. Appeareth before God. God. And you will find. There is something. That you will remember.

[28:27] As long as you live. That you get. On an occasion like that. When you are helped. To go up to the house of the Lord. Remember.

[28:40] Remember. What is said. Of that dear. Godly. Simeon. And that will help you to understand. What I want to.

[28:53] Make plain. Before. You. And it was revealed unto him. By the Holy Ghost. That he should not see death. Before he had seen the Lord's Christ.

[29:04] And he came. By the spirit. Into the temple. And then the child Jesus. Was brought in. And there it was. All that. Simeon. Simeon had lived for.

[29:17] And grown old. And gray headed. In waiting for the consolation. Of Israel. But. He came by the spirit. Into the temple. And now there is a. Thing to be known.

[29:28] Like that. When you feel. Such an impression. In your. Mind. That you want to get in touch. With God. In the attitude of worship. It may be. To hear the gospel preached.

[29:39] Or it may be. Only a prayer meeting. As the phrase is. A phrase that ought never to drop. From any of our lips. Because.

[29:50] After all. You wouldn't like to say this. Only to meet with God. And that is what a prayer meeting. Really is. When it is conducted.

[30:01] Aright. It is that you and I. May get in touch with God. And get good for our souls. Yes. Our feet shall stand.

[30:12] Within thy gates. Oh Jerusalem. The gate of worship. And how good it is. To stand in the gate. Of remembrance. The apostle Paul.

[30:26] Injoined upon the godly Hebrews. Call to remembrance. The former days. And I was going to say this. And I will. And that is just what you.

[30:38] Dear old greyheads. Should be doing. Call to remembrance. The former days. And not only call them to remembrance. But tell it to the generation following.

[30:51] Oh how glad some of them will be. To hear what you can tell out. Of the dealings of God. With you. And thereby. They will be helped to encourage.

[31:02] Their souls. In God. Yes. Thou shalt remember. All the way. The Lord thy God hath led thee. These forty years in the wilderness.

[31:13] Yes. The gate of remembrance. The Selmy said. I muse. On the works of thy hands.

[31:25] What a nice word that is. Muse. Very expressive. I muse. On the years. That are past.

[31:36] Where in my defense. Thou hast proved. The wilt thou relinquish at last. A sinner. So signally loved. Our feet shall stand.

[31:50] Within thy gates. Oh Jerusalem. You might call it the gate of meditation. Also. And how good it is to stand in the gates of the scriptures.

[32:05] To search the scriptures. And find what David found. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet. A light.

[32:16] Unto. My path. And to say. I rejoice in thy word. As one that findeth. Great spoil. Sometimes you turn the pages over.

[32:28] And you read chapter after chapter. And nothing seems to. Help you. Or throw any light. On the way you're going along. All seems cold and formal.

[32:38] But there are times. And you never know when that time will be. When you can open the word of God. And you are glued. To the sacred page.

[32:49] And what you read. Helps you. Strengthens you. Builds you up. In a good hope. Through grace. And you find. As you read.

[32:59] Of the Selmis. Or some other. Of the godly. Whose lives are recorded. Therein. As in water. Face answereth unto face. So does the heart of man.

[33:11] To man. Yes. And it might be. Well to call. The scripture gate. Inspiration gate. All scripture is given.

[33:22] By inspiration. Of God. And is profitable. Our feet shall stand. Within thy gates. O Jerusalem.

[33:34] Another gate. Which I must just touch on. Is the gate of service. And now. The saviour said.

[33:46] And do not forget it. I am among you. As he that serveth. And every sinner born again. Is not to live just as he likes.

[34:00] Or where and how he pleases. Is. But God. Has got a niche. For that sinner. To fill. And he will. Put that sinner.

[34:11] In it. And he will make that sinner. Aware. That he is where. God is ordained. He should be. I do like that word. In Ezekiel's prophecy.

[34:24] Where. You will remember. He speaks. In the dry bones. Chapter. That Ezekiel. Saw. And he says. I will.

[34:35] Place them. And he places. Every one of his people. Be they. Young or old. Wherever they may be. If they. Set up.

[34:45] Housekeeping. Under their home roof. And their sinners. Born again. And joined together. By God. He places them. Where they. Shall be able.

[34:56] To. Serve. The Lord. Christ. And what. Greater honor. Could you desire. Than to. Serve. Such a master. Such a.

[35:08] Worthy master. As Jesus Christ. Is. Yes. Our feet. Shall stand. Within thy gates. Stand. Within the gate.

[35:19] Of service. However hard. It may seem. At times. To continue. In it. With the difficulties. That arise. And. It will not be easy.

[35:31] To serve the Lord. Christ. In that sphere. That he ordains. Remember. What David said. Regarding. The temple. And the foundation.

[35:42] Of it. I will not. Give. To my God. That which. Costs me nothing. And if you. Desire. To serve. The Lord. Christ. You will find.

[35:53] Another word. Is joined. With service. And these two. Are joined together. And let not. Any man. Any minister. Ever put them.

[36:03] Asunder. Because they are. Joined together. By God. Service. Means. Sacrifice. He that. Taketh not up.

[36:14] His cross. And followeth. After me. Cannot. Be my. Disciple. It is costly. To follow Christ. But it is.

[36:25] Worthwhile. And when you. Count the cost. You say. Oh Lord. I would be. Thine alone. And wholly.

[36:35] Live to thee. Oh may I. Hope. That thou. Will own. A worthless. Worm. Like me. And you enter. Into. The gate of.

[36:46] Service. Yes. I might. Just mention. To. Coming toward. The amen. Some of you. Might be. Expecting it.

[36:58] And if you. Are expecting it. Then. I would. Recommend. You. To think. Of a scripture. In the Psalms. Which says.

[37:08] My soul. Wait thou. Only upon God. For my. Expectation. Is. From him. And you will. Expect.

[37:20] That something. Will be said. About the gates. Of obedience. Jesus. Says. To each. Believer. Be baptized. In my name.

[37:32] He himself. In Jordan's river. Was immersed. Beneath the stream. And it says. Then they. That gladly. Received the word.

[37:43] Were baptized. Christ. And to those. Who are glad. To go up. To the house. Of the Lord. Who do. Humbly. Hope. And believe.

[37:53] They have got. Good in going. And what. They treasure up. In their souls. Experience. And sometimes. Call it. To remembrance. And rejoice.

[38:05] In a good hope. Through grace. As the outcome. Of it. Surely. Surely. You will be saying. Our feet. Shall stand.

[38:16] Within thy gates. O Jerusalem. Yes. You will say. Come and hear. All ye that fear God.

[38:27] I will tell you. What he has done. For my soul. Yes. And the church of Christ. Will say to you. As you enter in. Through that gate. Of obedience. Come in thou.

[38:37] Blessed of the Lord. Wherefore. Standest thou. Without. And look at the determination. Of the psalmist. As I hinted at. Earlier on.

[38:50] Our feet. Shall stand. There is determination. There. And now. What does that mean? Remember.

[39:01] Some of them. Had to journey. A long way. From the outskirts. Of the land of promise. To be found in Jerusalem. On the appointed feast days. But they did not. Bawk at it.

[39:12] For God. Had guaranteed them. A safe conduct. And they must have. Often. Had. Much sweet. Fellowship. Together. Together. And now.

[39:27] I like this word. Stand. That seems to me. To be the operative word. As it were. In the subject. Our feet shall stand.

[39:39] Within thy gates. O Jerusalem. What it means is this. Firmness. Decision for the truth. Let your yea be yea.

[39:50] And your nay be nay. Lest ye fall. Into condemnation. It means. Establishment. In the truth. What is so desirable.

[40:03] And it means. If I may use such an expression. Spiritual alacrity. Readiness. Yes. There is a word.

[40:14] In the Old Testament. Which I like. Thy servants. Are ready to do. Whatsoever. The Lord shall appoint. A great.

[40:27] Frame of mind. To be in. And. If he says. This is the way. Walk ye in it. That is the way. They are determined. To go along.

[40:38] It means. Attention. Remember. Lydia. Heard. The gospel. The gospel preached. And her heart.

[40:48] Was opened. And it says. She attended. To the things. Which were spoken. And she was baptized. And she could not. Have told out.

[40:59] A very long. Deep experience. But what she did. Tell out. Was real. She had an open heart. She possessed. The hearing ear.
