[0:00] I will direct you to Psalm 32 and verse 8. Psalm 32 and verse 8.

[0:15] I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go. I will guide thee with mine eyes.

[0:30] Psalm 32 and verse 8. I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go.

[0:43] I will guide thee with mine eyes. My friends, isn't this just what you and I often feel to need?

[0:59] For one to instruct us in the way that we are to go. Not only in providential things when we don't know which way to go.

[1:14] When there's perhaps two ways. Ah, my friends, there are many times in providence when we feel to need one to instruct us.

[1:29] To instruct us in the way which is best for us. My friends, we are no different to lot.

[1:40] As we look upon things in a natural way, we look to see which looks the best pathway. pathway. That's not always the best pathway for us.

[1:52] It wasn't for lot. It nearly cost him his life. And he did lose his wife. Ah, my friends, we need one to instruct us.

[2:09] We need to be made willing to take the lowest place. To go in the pathway which is the roughest.

[2:23] But, my friends, flesh and nature doesn't choose our life. But, the Lord will instruct us.

[2:36] He'll show us the way to take. My friends, Abraham, he was willing to be instructed of the Lord.

[2:51] He was willing to go the way that Lot didn't go. He was submissive. Well, human nature would say, well, now that path didn't look so good.

[3:07] But, my friends, that's the natural eye. That's how we look at things naturally. The thing is, my friends, whatever pathway it is, and however rough it is, the Lord can bless you.

[3:26] But, he can make it profitable. Look at Jacob. He stayed with Laban. And, my friends, he had some rough paths to walk in.

[3:45] There were some crooked things went on with Laban. But, my friends, the Lord blessed him. He blessed him in Providence.

[3:58] He blessed the pathway to Jacob. But, there was the trial. And so, my friends, it often is the case.

[4:10] His children have to walk in paths that they haven't sought for. And, they are paths which, to the natural man, are difficult pathways.

[4:27] We can often look round to those in the world, or even in our own denomination, and say, well, I envy their pathway.

[4:41] That seems so much smoother. They seem to get on so much better. They seem to profit more. They seem to be blessed more.

[4:51] But, my friends, that is not the way that we are to look. That's courageousness.

[5:03] We envy them. But, my friends, we are to go to the Lord with these things. We need his blessing.

[5:15] And, he can bless that pathway that we are in. My friends, the thing is, are we in the pathway that the Lord has appointed for us?

[5:29] Or, are we walking in paths that we have sought, that we have chose, such as Lot?

[5:40] You see, my friends, I do not believe that Lot sought the Lord in the choosing of that way.

[5:55] But, Abraham did. And, Abraham was blessed. And, my friends, it becomes you and I, as we walk along, in providence and grace, to seek the Lord.

[6:10] That he would instruct us in the way that we are to go. That he would show us and make us admitted to walk in that pathway that he would have us walk in.

[6:28] I will instruct thee, and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go. I believe, my friends, this is the Lord's work, and that he is speaking to his children.

[6:49] I will instruct thee. I will instruct thee. My friends, what a mercy it is that the Lord instructs us.

[7:03] He brings about his holy will concerning us. He will make a way where there seems no way. He will cut across our pathway and stop us going in various pathways.

[7:20] My friends, can you and I look back over many years, perhaps, and see that the Lord has instructed us in the way that we should walk.

[7:39] I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go. Why, my friends, perhaps, we can look back many years now, now younger days, when we had ambitions to go in certain pathways.

[7:57] And, my friends, perhaps, we never did go in those pathways. Why? It was our desire, but the Lord prevented it.

[8:15] He didn't permit it. He instructed us. You say, well, how does he instruct us?

[8:26] Does he speak to us? Well, he does speak to us. But not always in the way that we expect him to.

[8:38] He doesn't speak to us now with words. But often, my friends, it's in our pathway.

[8:52] It's in providence. I'm a firm believer. That God's providence unfolds the book. I believe it's there that he instructs us.

[9:06] It's there he shows us his why. It's there he leads us in his paths. In paths that we haven't chosen.

[9:18] They were not according to our plans. Our plans. Our desires.

[9:31] Oh, my friends. The many changes that you and I have passed through. How have they come about?

[9:41] Has it been the Lord's hand? Has he gone before us?

[9:57] Perhaps we never saw his face even in those things. But, my friends. But, my friends, the Lord does go before his children.

[10:11] He does guide them. He does guide them. He does make a way for them. I believe, my friends. I believe, my friends.

[10:23] I can see his hand in many things in my life. How he has stopped me in many things.

[10:38] Permitted me to go into many paths. Sometimes they were short of a short duration.

[10:49] Sometimes they were many years against my will. Yet, my friends, I couldn't move.

[11:00] I had to stop there. I had to walk in those paths. And I believe they were for my good. I believe the Lord was instructing me.

[11:13] Oh, my friends. Sometimes we have to learn painfully that we are not our own.

[11:27] We have to prove that we make many mistakes. My friends, I learned one big mistake in my young days.

[11:45] In the paths of providence. I had my eye on riches.

[11:56] And my friends, I left my employment because of it.

[12:11] And the Lord, my friends, permitted me to do it. But it wasn't long, a matter of a few months, before I found myself in the army.

[12:28] Called up. No longer reserved. I was reserved in my job. On the paths. And my friends, oh, there were some lessons to learn.

[12:43] Painful things. I didn't like the army. I hated it. But my friends, all the mercy of God.

[12:56] Because after about 18 months, I was offered a Class B release for agriculture. My friends, the goodness of God, it brought me out.

[13:15] That was a means in his hands. And my friends, for many years, I felt I was in his hands.

[13:32] I couldn't move. I will instruct thee. I will instruct thee. I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go.

[13:45] It won't be the way that you and I thought it would be. It will be in paths that we have not known.

[13:56] It's there that he will teach us. It's there that he will open our eyes. It's there that he will bring us dependent upon him.

[14:07] Ah, my friends, we might well feel sometimes that we have made shipwreck, we have failed.

[14:20] But my friends, we may mourn, march over the pathway that we're walking in.

[14:31] because of the, how we have been placed, because of the things that came about, things we had no control over, and we've suffered perhaps many years since.

[14:51] I will instruct thee in the way that thou shalt go. I'll instruct thee.

[15:04] The Lord will bring it about. My friends, do we ever stop and think where we might have been had the Lord not intervened?

[15:18] Why, we might have been well satisfied with lying. We may have been seeking after providential things.

[15:32] But because we have come into those paths that we've come in to, they have been the means of keeping us at the Lord's feet.

[15:46] We've had to go to him many, many times. We've had to go to him to help us, to sustain us, to strengthen us. We've had to acknowledge that he reigns, and that we can do nothing without him.

[16:05] Ah, my friends, as it brought you and I to the footstool of mercy.

[16:16] Lord, help me. Help me to continue in this way. It's a painful way. It's a way that I do not like. Paul didn't like the pathway that he had to walk in with regard to the thorn in the flesh.

[16:34] He didn't like it. He didn't want it. Ah, but my friends, what did the Lord say to him?

[16:46] He refused to take it away, but he said, my grace shall be sufficient for thee. And isn't that what some of us have had to feel and know and experience over a period of many years?

[17:01] We've had to walk in paths we haven't liked. It's been a thorn in our flesh. What would we have done without the throne of Christ?

[17:15] How would we have lived if we hadn't have got that thorn in the flesh? Perhaps we would have been satisfied to live without God.

[17:26] Perhaps we would have had no thought toward him. But because of these paths, because of these pressures, we've had to go to the Lord that we might be held along.

[17:48] Ah, my friends, I say it is a mercy if the Lord is in it, if he is instructing us.

[18:00] For he makes no mistakes. There are afflictions that come upon us. My friends, I believe that his children will acknowledge from time to time that it is in love.

[18:20] You say, what, in love? That the Lord inflicts these things upon me? Yes, in love. I will instruct them.

[18:33] I know where you'll go, the Lord says in effect. I know how you'll be without these afflictions. You'll have no thought for me, no desire toward me.

[18:48] You'll be wrapped up in these time things. You'll put all your mind, soul, and strength in these providential things. Ah, my friends, we have to learn painful things.

[19:07] We have to learn what we are. But the Lord will instruct us. He'll bring us and draw us nigh unto him.

[19:21] I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go. Yes, my friends, there's no other way.

[19:34] You may try. I may try to go into another pathway and we can't.

[19:47] Everything fails. Perhaps it might be regarding business. We may think, yes, I could manage that.

[20:02] I'll go in that pathway. I'll go into that business. Yes, but my friends, if it is not according to the Lord's will and purpose, and if we are his, he'll instruct us in the way that we are to go.

[20:25] There'll be no prospect, even if we commence in that way. Ah, my friends, how often the Lord's children, they have to submit to the Lord.

[20:43] They have to fall into his hands. They are made to realize that they can do nothing without him. They are brought to know no will but his.

[20:57] Yes, it's not easy to come there. It's not easy to give up those things that are precious.

[21:08] It is not easy to submit and admit defeat. that my friends, the Lord's children, they are dependent upon him.

[21:26] They have to come to him. The Lord will bring them. The Lord will instruct them. The Lord will empty them.

[21:41] Yes. Ah, my friends, what a mercy it is if we are proving that we are not our own.

[21:53] Not our own. We can't do as we like. We can't go where we like. Well, you say, well, surely you don't want to go anywhere but the house of God and the walk in his path.

[22:11] My friends, aren't there times with you and I when we grow despondent, when we grow cold, when we think, ah, oh, look at the world, look how they enjoy themselves.

[22:30] Can't we go? Can't we have a day of pleasure? Sometimes we may venture, we may go. What do we find?

[22:43] Confusion. Our way edged up. There's no pleasure. Ah, my friends, I will instruct you.

[22:57] Yes, I'll instruct you. I'll show you what is good for you and what is not. Yes, what a mercy, my friends.

[23:10] The Lord shows us that from time to time. I say, what a mercy that he edges up our way. What a mercy that there is no comfort and peace oftentimes.

[23:29] Ah, my friends, we may venture in certain paths and find that we start off all right. Like Joe, he started off all right when he was rebellious.

[23:47] He found the ship to go to Tarsus. He paid the pair. But, my friends, that wasn't the end, was it?

[24:02] No, my friends, I will instruct thee. The Lord will instruct Jonah.

[24:15] The Lord will bring him to his senses indeed. And so he will every child of God.

[24:27] My friends, has he ever stopped you and I in a pathway that we were going in? Oh, my friends, I have one or two vivid things in my mind where the Lord stopped me.

[24:52] Yes, he stopped me. Cut across my pathway. I couldn't go any further. Not another step. My friends, it was like that in the exercise of the ministry.

[25:11] ministry. When, my friends, I felt I could not think upon it anymore because of something that was said in the preaching of the word.

[25:34] His servant, at that time, he spake regarding the exercise of the ministry in a certain man and woman. And I took that to myself.

[25:50] I went home. I said, yes, this is me and my wife. My friends, I hadn't told my wife that I was exercised about the ministry.

[26:04] I never did. The Lord told her. He showed what was going on in a remarkable way.

[26:19] But my friends, after that being said in the preaching, I could not look upon it anymore.

[26:30] And I told the Lord, I could not think upon it anymore. that if it was of him, I begged that he would come and show me again that it was of him.

[26:49] And my friends, I labored under that for a week. Well, you say, that's not long. You labor under something day and night for a week, and you'll think it's a long time.

[27:03] time. And I never said a word to anyone. But the next week I went again. And it was then, my friends, that the Lord spoke through the ministry again.

[27:23] and I was commanded that I was to do the work of an evangelist, to preach the word of God clearly as that.

[27:39] And the burden returned, and I couldn't shake it on. I will instruct thee. Yes, my friends, the Lord will instruct you and I.

[27:53] he'll show us his way. Yes, he will. I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go.

[28:11] Ah, the Lord will teach us. My friends, oh, oh, that the Lord would teach us each.

[28:26] And I believe, my friends, we shall feel to need the Lord to do this for us. It's solemn if we don't, if we're never brought there, because the Lord says, except you become as little children, children, you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven.

[28:53] And my friends, what is it to become as little children? children? We're grown men and women.

[29:05] How can we go back? How can we become little children? It means this. A child, naturally, has a need, and a felt need, to be instructive.

[29:22] it comes into tight corners. It comes into impossible pathways. It comes to that place where it realises it hasn't got any knowledge regarding a certain thing.

[29:42] What do they do? They go to the parents for advice, for help. So it is spiritual. the Lord's children, grown men and women, they are brought by the Lord's instruction, by his providences, they are brought into pathways where they become as little children.

[30:13] They don't know what to do. They don't know which way to go. They don't know how to deal with things. how does it come about?

[30:28] Well, you say, perhaps they're sick, perhaps they're ill, perhaps they're depression, nothing of the soul. people. My friends, it's the Lord's teaching.

[30:43] I will instruct them. How does he instruct us? He brings us to the end of our own health, our own strength. He brings us to that place where we have to feel and realise our dependence upon him.

[31:03] so we become a little children. We go to the Lord. We tell him the pathway we're walking in, the things that we're suffering.

[31:16] We ask him for advice in those things that we don't know what to do, how to deal with them. Well, many times I believe we come into those paths in our personal lives, in our religious lives, where we have to seek the Lord for advice, for help, where we have to seek for deliverance from the powers of sin and Satan.

[31:50] Oh, my friends, the Lord knows how to bring us to the end of our own strength. so that we cry unto him, I will instruct thee, and teach thee the way which thou shalt go.

[32:16] My friends, if we are rightly exercised, we shall want to know the pathway to heaven. I will instruct thee.

[32:32] Oh, my friends, what teaching there is for his children. They have to be brought to that place where they are wholly dependent upon him to be saved, saved from their sin, saved from their failings.

[33:01] Oh, my friends, oh, the blessed instruction of the Lord with his children. He brings them, he instructs them, he shows them where they are, where they are heading for.

[33:17] My friends, do you know anything of it? Has the Lord brought you and I to see where we were heading for?

[33:36] That wasn't the work of the flesh. I believe that was the work of the Spirit. yes, my friends, the Lord shows his children, he'll instruct them.

[33:56] He knows how to bring them to cry for mercy. Have you ever sought for mercy? Oh, my friends, a solemn thing is you and I have never sought for mercy.

[34:12] If we've never sought for mercy, my friends, we have no evidence. of being a child of God, and if we're never brought to cry for mercy, my friends, we shall never enter heaven.

[34:32] Heaven is a place for his children, his chosen children, those that are lost and ruined in their selves, those that need a redeemer.

[34:50] And our blessed Lord has undertaken to redeem his people, to save them from their sins, to cleanse them from all sin.

[35:04] Yes, he washes them in his precious heart. God, I will instruct thee, and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go.

[35:19] My friends, this blessed teaching will bring you and I to the footstall of mercy. It will bring us to the cross of Christ.

[35:34] that's where it will bring us. It's there, my friends, that we shall find mercy. No other place.

[35:50] I will instruct thee, and teach thee, all my friends, what a mercy it is, that the Lord does this for his children.

[36:10] Yes, we would never look to Jesus. We would never seek all mercy.

[36:21] We would never acknowledge defeat. Human flesh doesn't like to be defeated.

[36:34] But the Lord's children, my friends, they're humble. They're taught of him. They're instructed of him. They're brought to acknowledge that they can do nothing without him.

[36:51] They're brought to confess unto the Lord Jesus Christ their sins. they have to cry out from their very heart, give me Christ or else I die.

[37:09] That isn't, my friends, of the flesh. That is of the Spirit of God. That is the fruits of being instructed by him.

[37:27] I will instruct thee and teach thee the way, the way that we are to go, that thou, the way which thou shalt go.

[37:43] oh my friends, where does this take place? It takes place in the heart.

[37:57] What are the means? The word of God, the house of God. The Lord will come sometimes personally, directly, without means, it will come straight into the heart, straight into the conscience.

[38:24] Yes, I will instruct thee and teach thee. Oh my friends, haven't we had to prove many times that the Lord disturbs us?

[38:40] He exercises us. He shows us his way. How many of us would have walked in his ways and kept his commands?

[38:52] How many of us, my friends, would have been made willing to giving our testimony before the church of God and to try and humbly tell what we hope the Lord had done for us?

[39:09] I say how many of us would have submitted and been baptized? I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way that thou shalt go.

[39:24] God, my friends, can we look back, those of us who have walked in that pathway, can we say to the honour and the glory of the Lord that he led us, he brought it about, it was his doings?

[39:48] God, my friends, I will instruct thee and teach thee. Oh, my friends, I know this, that I would have never, never walked in that pathway had he not instructed me and taught me.

[40:12] my friends, and I never, never will forget some of those things that took life. One of those things was this, if thou tarry till the morning light, some evil will befall thee.

[40:32] And my friends, I had to go that night. I could not tarry till the morning light. Such was the power the solemn realisation in my heart that some evil would befall me.

[40:48] It was God's voice. It was his instruction. It was his power. And he is still the same today, my friends. But he works as he pleases.

[41:02] There isn't a set pattern. Everyone's pathway is different. But my friends, he leads his children to the same point, and that is to a precious Christ.

[41:20] Yes. I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way that thou shalt go. For may the Lord bless his word to us.

[41:32] May we be made to hear his voice and walk according to his will and purpose. For his name's name's name.
