[0:00] The 72nd Psalm and the 17th verse His name shall endure forever His name shall be continued as long as the sun and men shall be blessed in Him all nations shall call Him blessed This Psalm dear David penned concerning his son Solomon we may say as the Lord Jesus spoke a great and Solomon is set forth here There's so many things this wonderful Psalm this jewel of precious truths that signify so clearly that by the spirit of prophecy in his heart
[1:01] David was prophesying regarding God's own eternal son the Lord Jesus Christ the sinner's friend that dear man of old knew not what he was doing and wrote these Psalms it was the expression of his soul's desire it was the worship of his heart was put into language was used for worship in the sanctuaries of old but God who works wonders in the heart of the dear Psalmist not telling man ordained these blessed truths should be the gracious pastor the living pastor of the flock of Christ through all time those expressions in the heart of the dear Psalmist in his troubles his fears his persecutions his difficulties should be the blessed means employed the glory of God for eternity but that was the case so we look a little this Psalm this evening in the light of that truth and David said give the king thy judgments
[2:13] O God the righteous and the king's son my friends from beginning to end true religion will bring us into a sweet divine and sacred acknowledgement of the kingship of God's own eternal son by nature each one of us has a heart that's intent to go in its own way heart circling round our own person when God in his mercy quinks the poor soul divine life that idol is brought down for his heavenly majesty and the poor soul begins to bow down for the glory the great kingdom of heaven the poor soul is humbled in true contrition and godly sorrow for sin and wants the Lord to work in their hearts to work for them through them toward them and with them for good bring up last eternal glory in heaven and so David had the same spirit in his heart as works in the hearts of God's people even today and in such a measure of his dear man given an understanding of the glory of that kingdom of God's own dear son in heaven and upon earth he had nothing more to pray for now if you're a child of God friends there'll be one or two times in your life that such faith be granted to your soul you'll have nothing more to pray for we sometimes sing a fullness resides in Jesus our head and ever abides to answer our need the fountain all flows a woe to redress and there's a fullness dear friends in the precious name and merit of our dear
[4:14] Redeemer in heaven that will never diminish as ever prove sufficient for his dear people to eternal glory in heaven to come he says my grace is sufficient for thee and when a few is given the all-sufficiency and the kingship and the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ above every other name in heaven and earth and beneath the earth is before all things by more things consist then a soul can with faith from heaven rest in those holy arms and hands of infinite love and mercy unto them to know no will but his they learn the first words that that prayer the Lord gave to his disciples it takes a lifetime to teach us friends our father which art in heaven hallowed be thy name thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven and our great sins friends are self-centeredness we cannot get out of it by nature it's our terrible sin before a holy
[5:32] God can never get to heaven in that friends but what a mercy it is friends in that precious Jesus those judgments of God that rise to the king's son lay upon his heavenly majesty you see in the 53rd of Isaiah the wonderful remedy for God dear living family there's not one friends not good for that sin you know it speaks all the holy Israel of God have turned their own way and man wants their own way the world wants their own way and so it causes confusion and confliction because we want our own way there's a worse thing for us friends if our own way we should go into eternal misery at last whether religious way or otherwise but when the mercy of God comes dear friends there's another way there's one person in heaven says
[6:33] I am the way he says I am the door I am the life I'm the bread of life he's everything dear friend and he's a saving grace for his dear living family and oh how's it come about this righteous judgment this solemn solemn bring forth a judgment from heaven here upon earth it was just here friends laid on him the iniquity of us all precious Jesus friend of sinners we are such to thee drawn near ah there's no place like it friend to be brought to but the shadow of that cross of calvary to find your sins swallowed up in the lamb's redeeming blood to realize your interest in that one who pleads in heaven a great high priest with
[7:38] God Jesus the friend of sinners and so the dear man had a glimpse of the glory that everlasting kingdom to blessed be his glorious name forever let the whole earth be filled with his glory amen and amen nothing more to pray for he prayed after this friends I'm sure he prayed on his deathbed to dear David but this prayer was not the termination of prayer it was the fulfillment of his soul desire of faith his prayers were ended he could see the glorious kingdom of God's own dear son to his soul you might say what proof have you of that well friend let's go back in the book of Samuel David went in and sat before the Lord and he said who am I and what is my house and so do we sit before the
[8:43] Lord friends we feel just the same as David did and Cornelius the same we are all here present for God Cornelius said it wasn't Peter he was listening to he wanted the Lord to speak to him and so was David when he sat before the Lord he said who am I a poor undone helpless sinner unworthy of thy notice Lord consumed like a moth swallowed up so quickly in my sins and myself oh who am I what is my house what can I boast of my merits to plead with the great God of eternity but oh he said although my house be not so with God yet hath he made with me David had made it friend
[9:44] God made the covenant with David his God's work will stand friend he hath made with me an everlasting covenant on all things ensure this part of my religion a make up to balance the scales with myself my poor unworthy nature no dear friend what was it is all my salvation and all my desire the dear man says this has one awake with thy likeness lord this poor own nature undone guilty and wounded but lord I look to one on high the saviour poor sinners that forgiveness with thee thou mayst be feared David says with him is plentious redemption that is hope in the lord David says not in David or other man let him hope in the lord for with him is plentious redemption no insufficiency friends a fullness resides in
[10:52] Jesus our head that everybody wants our need well it's what this psalm had in his heart friends this fullness of glory the king of kings the glory of heaven his never dying soul opened up to his spirit and he could worship the whole glory to be filled with the earth all the glory this dear redeemer so it must only speak of God's own eternal son here upon earth in heaven above this world be fulfilled in God's own good time and way David's prayer will one day be completely fulfilled in God's everlasting wisdom and mercy to his people here upon this earth there's no come to our text his name just two words friends but do you know friend upon these two words hangs our everlasting destiny for out of
[12:00] Christ almighty power can do nothing but devour we found in him my dear friend he were the weakest upon this earth yet that heaven they should go at us for his compassion and tender mercy so once he set forth this beautiful psalm to encourage poor helpless needy undone sinners with nothing in themselves to plead but all kings shall fall down before him not one exempt this glorious kingdom from heaven working amongst all creation the glorious precious name all kings shall fall down before him at last they may strive they may have warfare and tumult and wisdom it makes no difference he shall see the trouble of his soul and shall be satisfied in heaven and not a vacant throne he hates to put away our friends and so what's he going to do for he shall live the needy when he cries when prayers poured in the heart of any poor sinner here upon this earth from heaven prayer indicted from above the
[13:26] Lord is sure to hear soul of Tarsus had many long prayers but not one prayer ascended to heaven friends till the time come and God's appointment and then heaven said regarding soul of Tarsus behold see he prayeth only a short prayer what was this prayer for not what he done no Lord what thou have me to do give the king thy judgment so God soul said lead me and guide me with thy spirit now Lord leave not to walk alone this wilderness Lord take possession of this poor heart and life now to do all this wicked nature I feel within me the poor man said what he found within his poor nature when he would do good he was present with him the poor man said that was good
[14:27] I know not before God well Russian man I am the dear man says but oh he had a refuge to go to so I thank God you almost hear the relief his poor troubled heart I thank God through our Lord Jesus Christ who received something through him dear friend said what shall you ask in my name that will I do for you no other door to heaven friends no other way to look to but our dear redeemer upon calvary who pleads in heaven eternal glory the king of glory above his nine so in this word here we have the sufficiency and blessed compassion of that tender heart of heaven his human heart he still retains though thrown in highest bliss he fills his tempted members pines for their afflictions his and all their affliction he was afflicted the angel his presence saved them loved his pity been all the days of old he should live with the needy when he cries the poor also him let no helper and
[15:57] I rejoice in that he wasn't poor in the natural goods of the world he was not poor in authority and dignity and power the kingship he had his soldiers plenty of wealth and sustenance and there he was a great king raised up by God that was not his hope friend was he but when he came before God did he plead his name his nature his kingship no he pleaded my dear friends that great king of glory he says but I'm poor and needy you say what David that can't be true you're not poor David no God has given you many providential blessings David you're not poor a man ah he wouldn't look at the outside friends look at his poor heart of nature his destitution how he stood before a holy
[17:04] God so I've got nothing to plead with the Lord I'm poor and I'm needy too I've got a soul needy salvation he says say to my soul I am thy salvation David says yet have you ever felt that dear friend in your soul and wondered God ever looked down upon you to have mercy upon you this poor man cried and the Lord heard him oh what wonderment what worship in the soul of a poor broken hearted sinner to realise that God looked down upon such poor needy insignificant souls you know dear friend the sparrows from heaven and known the Lord poor sinners yes I've been tempted many times once terribly tempted in
[18:07] London in my prayers and the enemy said to me one Sunday in London praying on my own he said what a what a presumptuous wretch you are God will look upon you in London thousands and thousands of people and you nothing at all would hear your prayers there's great people here and I believed him to my shame the Lord sent down two sparrows upon a birdbath in front of me and that would drop right in my heart you are more better than many sparrows the Lord says I said Lord thou canst look upon this poor sinner hear they would hear his poor cries he gave me a word went to the church meeting on the Monday the pastor Arthur deacon to give his account of what he had found with a certain person come from the church he said
[19:08] I shan't say what I think I'll open the Bible and read to you what the Lord thinks and he read the same passage of scripture and so you see Lord turn the enemy away from us friends he tempts you you're weak your hope is in vain my friends good you seek never obtained but it's only because you're going to obtain it my friend pray if thou canst or canst not speak but pray with faith in Jesus name and so the words of encouragement shows the nature and the heart of our dear redeemer in heaven it shows how precious their lives are to him as long as the work of grace is to be continued they're preserved by his almighty power then they'll be taken to heaven until the work of grace is done they'll be spared and continued and upheld as long as work has yet to be done to prepare them for eternal glory he'll redeem their softness sight and violence the pressure of the blood be in his sight and he shall live a living redeemer the apostle
[20:31] Paul had been the third heavens that dear man still prayed that I may know him many know about him my dear friends Balaam knew about the gospel when he spoke about the people in the wilderness but he didn't walk with them he didn't live with them he didn't feed the manna from the wilderness he didn't worship in the tabernacle no but all my dear friends like Paul of old he still prayed the same prayer that I may know him you know friends heaven he opened up eternally that glorious person worthy is the lamb see for honour glory power and divine forever more amen yesterday evening or yesterday I was thinking about going to Hartford to preach and my mind began to be turned toward here and one or two thoughts came into my mind amongst them it was in the seventh revelation and I was thinking little of this word meditating upon it my spirit before this evening hour and it came to me that was spoken regarding the in the seventh chapter of revelation when it says here when the artist answered saying unto me what are these which are arrayed in white robes and whence came they
[22:06] I said to him sir thou knowest he said to me these are those came at a great tribulation have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the lamb therefore are they before the throne of god and star of me die night this temple your sin the throne shall dwell among them they shall hunger no more no thirst anymore nor shall have sunlight on them nor any heat the lambs in the midst of the throne shall feed them to lead them to the fount of living waters and god shall wipe away all tears from their eyes is that word therefore it's the troubles these people have to go through the pains anguish this world and my first dear wife was taken home I went to well into preach of preaching in the book of Malachi trying to about the
[23:08] Lord's jewels came toward the end it came to my spirit he will spare them must be the own son that serve them and I said the dear friends are told yes when the work of grace is done they once have to suffer one more sin one more temptation one more fear this poor dark world of wickedness and sin taken to eternal glory in heaven and so that word says therefore heaven will be a very strange place to unregenerate sinner friend who know not Jesus of all the religion but without Christ friends it would be a strange place they never get there but all these poor tried and tempted souls in our Texas evening are buffeted cast down tried tempted afflicted by many things this world but all though the ones who
[24:12] Christ will bless all the riches of his grace and so here we have before us a word of encouragement to trembling souls helpless souls needy souls and weak souls that great redeem in heaven know his name I have not time to speak tonight of this name have I it would take eternity to speak of him but I just give you one thought for meditation that's just it all the names mentioned of our dear Lord Jesus Christ in the Old Testament in all those wonderful words spoken of divine nature and person we have in the book of Isaiah his name to be called Wonderful Cancer the Almighty God the Everlasting Father Prince of Peace we have many other names spoken in the Old Testament relating the coming Redeemer but my friends all those names are contained in one blessed name above all others well deserves the name of friend oh friends your faithful friend he's a truthful friend my dear friends and so that name is the name of
[25:34] Jesus who shall save his people from their sins you meditate and prayerfully when you have a moment to spare see every other name the Old Testament related to the coming Redeemer is contained that one blessed eternal name that command goes forth from heaven to every soul in every nation and every generation of humanity thou shalt call his name Jesus just in the intellect no friends with a thankful heart there's such a name in the person to look to God's only eternal son who came down in Bethlehem's manger the angel shall come forth in all the glory of heaven to herald his incarnation glory to God in the highest on earth peace God's will toward man unto you the
[26:35] Savior which is Christ the Lord all God's own dear son in our flesh dwelling here upon earth as David all our salvation and all that is our now in that name friends of God he's made unto us wisdom God gives a measure of wisdom to poor creatures here upon this earth regarding natural things when it comes to our souls friends we fail don't we what poor foolish wandering worms we are we have no wisdom to boast about I thank God day by day friends we're not going to trust to my wisdom to get to heaven God thank for in my heart the word of God to the wayfaring men though fools should not erther him so it's not wisdom that takes to heaven friends it's God's wisdom and that wisdom my friends is holy as God is holy it's as pure as
[27:43] God is pure it's God's wisdom to save his dear people his own dear son for his holy majesty and glorious person are all the attributes of God's eternal person that saves people to heaven at last ye are complete in him now friends out of self to Jesus flee then my dear friends for wisdom of God he's made unto us wisdom conveyed to us all by faith the wonderful pure wisdom of God who was able to make peace between God's poor ruined people and a holy God the fallen nature of Adam we're not born in this world friends as sons of the most high God has his purposes that by redeeming quickening great it shall be so in the end we're born in sin shape and iniquity we're not born friends recipients of God's grace we're all children of wrath even as others
[28:59] Paul says as we're born in this world in our nature but God has a purpose of grace for his dear people and that purpose is made manifest in making himself known to them as the sinner's friend to realise in their hearts that wounded nature in which they are born and that is realised the wisdom in God's own dear son that they are complete in him well then there's this wisdom this without partiality I'm very sure like Peter we would say sometimes not so Lord and I sometimes say to our people at home who was pleased to answer our prayers and bringing others around us we should need the grace that God gave to Peter because no doubt there may be some in God's electing love and mercy in the world around us we should never ourselves invite him we should say not so Lord may be but friend by the grace of
[30:09] God we should be rebuked for it because dear Peter it said to Peter of course they're common that God of cleanse took him right back to cover his cross friends his only hope for heaven showed him just where he was and he had his Lord and master what hope he had this poor old nature for a holy God that God loved him to all eternity so Peter had to go back again retrace his steps of course they're not common that God has cleansed is that blood of Calvary my friend ineffectual is not God sovereign to have mercy on whom he will have mercy be gracious to whom he will be gracious is not the word of God true my dear friends those in the world around us God in mercy should have mercy upon them
[31:09] I feel we should say not so Lord sometimes I'm sure my poor nature would left to myself sometimes maybe it's not our choice friends Satan cannot love the Saviour's choice now wicked heart of self righteous pride can't love it friend no it will say not so Lord but God will have his way friends he did with Cornelius and Peter never found such a congregation of people as he found when he went in obedience the Lord's divine and heavenly command and he had a blessing upon his soul and spirit the Gentiles also received the spirit of God even as way ah friends sovereign grace or sin abounding ransom souls the tidings swell here's a deep nose no sounding whose length or breadth can tell honest glories may my soul forever dwell it's never been fathomed yet friend poor
[32:29] Elijah was chased in the wilderness by a wicked woman a queen of old there the poor man was in the cave and he made a complaint for the Lord God of Israel is here am I here I alone am left here Elijah says there's none none left but one poor prophet of old poor Elijah oh the Lord soon showed him he was wrong seven thousand souls not bowed down they need up by all the Lord says and Paul says even now the remnant collection of grace even in 1996 1997 friends the world is still true and so may we hear the voice of Elijah God unto us in these days in which we live friends we do not know who God's people are but may we know we're amongst some dear friends living and dying to be his may say to our souls on the isolation and many times this wilderness we need it many times so this name unchanging eternal shall endure will never come short never wear out or what thousands of souls have gone to heaven lisping the precious name of
[34:01] Jesus and may soul be taken the sanctuary here resting in his precious name and merits shall endure forever these blessings friends are not for time only you know they're eternal blessings in Christ Jesus quickening grace eternal life will never come to an end I'll give unto them eternal life and none shall pluck thee from my hand he says he's an all sufficient saviour or might have saved and so we go in the personal application here all that precious name shall endure dear friend forever did Jesus once upon thee shine we sometimes sing live it out in a dark dispensation is another matter isn't it we feel cold sometimes and listless and carnal and apathetical and wandering and worldly minded in our poor natural hearts of nature we mourn over and confess then to realise his unchanging love that seems just sheer presumption but you have to live to prove it friends for nothing about it his name shall endure the word of
[35:28] God says it does endure good he shall save his people from their sins we try to get a little bit hobble along on our own you know have a blessing upon our spirit and then try to walk a little in our own strength we're not leaning upon him for as we should do ever on thy captain calling make thy worst condition known he shall hold thee up and fall and lift thee up when down or his name shall endure the sins of his dear people friends if any man sin John says if any man sin advocate with the father Jesus Christ the righteous there's no man that sin is not so we have no sin we deceive ourselves and make God a liar and that's a solemn thing to do friends what a mercy to know the truth friends the preciousness the name of the
[36:29] Lord Jesus and our souls blessed be his glorious name forever the dear man said and our souls echo it it shall endure all the troubles of this church here below they're tried they're tempted they're buffeted they're threatened yes my friends it's not what they are what these feeble jews do here they said those wicked people and there they were trying to build a wall there's only a few of them with their trousers and their sores and there they were trying to build a wall and so those enemies said what the feeble jews do here they're looking upon the people not looking upon their God but you see it was not what the people were doing what the God was doing for them wasn't it look the church is here below the world looks on a few feeble sinners down together in the sanctuary Sabbath after Sabbath I once worked for a man he was a good master to me but he was a worldly man he was going in his car on
[37:35] Sundays and I used to go and try and preach to poor sinners here and there he said to me on the Monday well you've been in the chapel again I suppose that lovely summer Sunday with your few people trying to worship I said yes I have glad to be there I said I've been out in the sunshine God's nature all the Sabbath day said I've been worshiping just as well as you you you know I said yes you may think so but I can't agree with you the time come and he sent for me in his bedroom and even before our service at Beatherston he said I want to ask you a favour I said what is it he said will you pray for me in your little chapel tonight when you go over the prayer meeting he said I think it's tonight and I said it's tonight now I said I'll see and I hope we may be able to pray for you God have mercy upon you I said good night on my way when I went to work in the morning the poor man was dead on the floor by his bed you see the Lord showed him before he died friends there's only one way to heaven the Lamb's redeeming blood the hedge rose look at the flowers the sun in the heavens of glory shining upon him there's something lacking friends it was with
[39:00] Cain Cain brought the fruits of the earth there's something going on here he knew nothing about that was sin but I Bell comes will sacrifice a poor guilty limping sinner before a holy God of glory and he comes I Bell with a man there's only one way to heaven friends for our never dying souls to keep your eyes on Jesus fixed and there your hope to stay and Peter says the God of all grace calls us unto our son his eternal glory now we go one step further these are eternal things friends his name will live and the sun will shine no more this earth will still live to all eternity so these people are called unto eternal glory and your soul will worship in eternal things you will have to do with heavenly places in
[40:10] Christ Jesus in your worship we raise above the world sometimes in your soul and faith to look in these heavenly matters beyond your soul's eternal welfare so his name shall endure then for his dear people and there will be that building up from time to time in God's own good time and way shall endure forever those blessings are eternal that little hymn we sometimes sing the streams on earth we've tasted that's a blessed true hymn isn't it more deep we'll drink above we'll have some foretaste here dear friend I tell you raise your soul right above the world yourselves and sin joy heart and affection those things in heaven God's own dear son you'll be like dear Peter was whom having not seen we love to you're unspeakable and full of glory to the end of our faith the salvation of our souls is eternal reality if you have to do with friends and eternal blessings so we go on one step further his name shall be continued as long as the start there's an encouragement you know because we live in sad days is putting some weight on the sun in the heavens no it's not that at all it's telling us as long as the sun shines with what goes down the last time is set to rise no more his name shall be continued it's a great mercy friends that there's that so this will be written the generation to come it goes right on even beyond that generations to come and as long time to last the gospel will still be preached jesus will still be worshipped to know people upon this earth the last redeemed best the most prepared for eternal glory that we no more need this world in which we live the world will be completed it is finished will then be completely fulfilled in
[42:32] God's wonderful wisdom his people here upon earth in heaven to come then shall the son of God come in the clouds of heaven with all the hosts of angels you want to be a clear sky dear friends here come the clouds of glory from heaven with all his holy angels the dead in Christ shall rise first incorruptible then shall be even as he is now we know in part and we see in part and so his name I sometimes think these things were just history and wonderful accounts of God's dealings in the past it would give us interest maybe but all give us an aching void in our hearts could no be filled for name but these things are written for your learning dear friends that we through faith and patience might have hope and so as long as the son there will be a people to worship the
[43:43] Lord in his own good time and way and means that he will employ and so we have hope for generations to come and men should be blessed in him what a wonderful mercy it is isn't it we have many things around us this world are not blessed many things the world around us that cause us much dismay and sadness but think of the people going into the land of promise there's two mountains one was Jerusalem and one was evil one was mountains of solemn judgments and curses against all sin and transgression against the God of Israel the other is a mountain of blessing they went through the two mountains in the land of promise and so it is the child of God on the one hand is sin nor we are by nature that brings guilt upon the soul of
[44:44] God dear people but all God's mercy friends rejoice against judgment or the wonderment as a remedy for sin friends and helpless needy souls here upon this earth and men should be blessed in him Lord didn't curse anyone dear friends did he no and those who tried to take his words and catch him then they had no comfort from him but every poor needy soul whoever it may be the beggar man the poor woman all the distress and wounds the one who pressed through the crowd to touch the bow of his garment the hand of faith the Lord didn't turn one poor helpless sinner away who came seeking mercy for Jesus sake men shall be blessed in him friends in him all wisdom dwells to save for all eternal glory he is a good shepherd of sheep and
[45:51] David says so all nations shall call him blessed well he will prophecy yet to be fulfilled the book of revelation to keep in the scriptures of God is a safe place isn't it to every kindred nation Roman tongue not one unrepresenting heaven at last not one person people may have nationalities and say not so Lord well Lord will rebuke us for that friends we must not work on nationalities we may have surprises sometimes but God's word is that all nations should call him blessed and that's the Lord's word friend not my word is it and all nations shall call him blessed friends in heaven at last the word God says so in the revelation and so the word is not to encourage you to hope in
[46:58] God dear friends in all your sadness and weakness sadness the path you may have to be treading this present time the sanctifying grace unto you a word is in my spirit even tonight a light to those that sit in darkness in the shadow of death to guide our feet into the way of peace may guide you dear friend your prayers your meditations in that one dear one man in heaven this man should be the peace the peace of God which passeth all understanding to keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus Amen to whether he nour hee or anything
