[0:00] I venture to read a word from the 50th of Isaiah, reading the 6th verse.
[0:18] Isaiah 50 verse 6 I gave my back to the spiders and my cheeks, to them that plucked off the hair.
[0:38] I hid not my face from shame and spitting. Isaiah 51 verse 7 We felt, as we journeyed along, this first clause to come to one's mind.
[1:31] I gave my back to the spiders. That which had little measure laid upon our spirit, we felt to be taken completely away.
[1:54] Looking unto the Lord, trusting in him, venturing upon him.
[2:06] We seek to meditate a little, a few moments, upon these words of prophecy.
[2:18] To none other can they be ascribed in full measure than to the Son of God.
[2:36] None other passed in such a path.
[2:48] But he who learned obedience, though he were a son, yet learned he obedience by the things that he suffered.
[3:09] I gave my back to the spiders. Amongst those cruel sufferings wrought upon the Lord Jesus Christ was that of scourging.
[3:41] He had passed through the judgment hall. He had borne those false accusations.
[3:58] Spent that night amidst his tormentors.
[4:12] cruel men who were determined that he should be crucified.
[4:26] Pilate, seeing no fault in him, sought that Barabbas might be, that he might be released as twas their custom.
[4:45] But no, such was the hatred of these Jews, their rejection of Christ.
[4:57] Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate sought that he might thus be released.
[5:09] Pilate sought that he was released. But they cried, Barabbas, even one that truly was the traitor, one that had caused sedition, might be released unto them.
[5:28] Pilate sought that he was released. Pilate sought that he was released. Now, he came under that torment of the Roman soldiers.
[5:44] Is it nothing to you, all ye that passed by? Behold and see, if there be any sorrows, like unto my sorrow.
[6:05] This scourging which was now his lot, was that which was practiced in those days, and by the Roman soldiers upon their helpless victims.
[6:21] The end of the Roman soldiers, chained to a pillar, we understand four soldiers, smite their victims with those staves, the end of which are cords.
[6:47] At the end of those cords, those nails, they took it in turn. To smite, scourge, these that were about to be crucified.
[7:08] I gave my back to the smiters. Dumb as he had been, before his accusers, opened not his mouth.
[7:31] Here now, under this bitter provocation, he gave his back to the smiters.
[7:44] Prophecy fulfilled. Again, there is a word in the psalms.
[7:59] The plough, the plough, the ploughed my back. Deep, deep, deep, and long were those furrows, which were thus wrought.
[8:22] Again, prophecy. Again, prophecy. Oh, is there not? Every evidence here, as again and again will be found throughout the word of God, of he that should come, and the path that he should tread.
[8:45] Revelation in the Old Testament, given unto the patriarchs, revealed of God by varied means.
[9:00] The prophets, indicted by God, under the prophets, they were enabled to pen those words, which reveal the pathway of this one that should come.
[9:23] This one so spoken of here, in David's greater son, the plough has ploughed my back.
[9:38] All thing of that injury, which must have resulted such cruelty.
[9:55] The very spirit recoils at the very thought of that which was inflicted upon these helpless victims.
[10:10] See here, one. One who had done no sin. One who had ne'er committed one last person.
[10:24] One who was pure, holy, spotless. One who was indeed the very Son of God from all eternity.
[10:39] He bore the ignominy of these sufferings as he was rejected by the Jews.
[10:54] One who was indeed the two. One who was indeed the two. One who was indeed the one whom they indeed feared.
[11:09] The. Another hose. What a wicked man, who has np. One could found out upon death and death. Off. That lie upon him, the iron is divine. Oh died науч??
[11:27] Wow. for they knew if he could be but convicted of treason the penalty was death I gave my back to the smithers consider him we are enjoying consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself lest ye be weary and faint in your minds I gave willingly gave patiently endured let this mind be in you says the dear apostle which was also in Christ Jesus he made himself of no reputation he bore that which was so at him without reviling when he was reviled he reviled not again and threatened he when persecuted he threatened not he opened not his mouth against these his accusers and these that so so cruelly oppressed him
[13:27] I gave my back to the smithers it is indeed a solemn scene which comes before us here which opens up by these thoughts yea the Lord Jesus Christ in that weakness of his human body he who was tempted in all points like as we are yet without sin he must needs experience yea be subjected to those same afflictions indeed in greater depth than any that should pass through them that he might be that great high priest touched with a feeling of our infirmities able to succor them that are tempted able to have compassion upon the ignorant and them that are out of the way able to sympathize yea to feel as one expresses old to feel each tempted member's pains
[15:12] I gave my back to the smithers we have then here the path he trod to pass to pass this way one's thoughts go to a line of a hymn deep are the wounds which sin hath made those furrows figuratively speaking inflicted upon him by his assailants were indeed amongst those sufferings which he was to bear that he might release his bride his church from the pit of corruption deep indeed are those wounds which sin hath made oh t'was sin the sins of the election of grace the sins of those chosen of God from all eternity these were laid upon him afflicted in body mind and soul he bore that punishment that sinners such sinners might go free not only have we here that path he trod but we have the spirit of
[17:08] Christ revealed we have that holy example set before us we have that condition which he would have his people in amidst those sufferings which tis their lot to bear in this wilderness here below I gave my back to the smithers thy master's lot thou must expect and says temptations more or less his way was much rather and darker than mine oh that such a thought could be impressed by the spirit of
[18:10] God upon our spirit and where would then be that rebellion rising up within oh where would then be that murmuring of spirit where would then be that hastiness in the answering of the tongue against such that are permitted to assail his way was much rather and darker than mine and did Christ my Lord suffer and shall I repine I gave my back to the slightest the first words indicate t'was willingly given these reveal again the spirit of
[19:15] Christ he turned his cheek the other cheek to them that they might smite that also again leading us to those exhortations that way he would have such walk that are reviled and despised misunderstood, rejected and cast as outcasts I gave my back to the smithers literally so he walked this path indeed he bore such cruelty no words could ever express malice wrought within the heart a product of the fallen nature so resented this one promised Messiah they rose in as one against him and afflicted him a man of sorrows we read in the following chapters a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief he was despised he was rejected wounded for our transgressions bruised for our iniquities the chastisement of our peace was upon him and with his stripes with his stripes we are healed he was oppressed he was oppressed and he was afflicted yet he opened not his mouth he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter there is a sheep before her shears so he opened not his mouth yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him to bruise him
[21:51] I gave my back to the smiters and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair he withheld not but willingly gave himself gave himself for sinners these are not cunningly devised fables these are truths many have the doctrines of truth in the head we would that those doctrines might indeed distill as the dew they might be made precious unto us by the application of them by the spirit of God unto our spirit may to realise the blessedness of them that the Lord
[23:22] Jesus Christ took upon himself a body like our own precious truth vital to our salvation salvation if these foundations be removed what shall the righteous do vital truths Emmanuel God with us divinity clothed with holy humanity high priests one of those things spoken of them was that they should be taken from among men that they should be able to sympathise even with such that are ignorant and out of the way these high priests the offspring of Aaron chosen of God to this office should be such that thus would be enabled to offer gifts and sacrifices to offer sacrifice for sins their own and the sins of the people the
[24:57] Lord Jesus Christ he knew no sin but in all points was he tempted like as we are he knew the weakness of human the human frame he knew what it was to hunger he knew what it was to thirst he knew what it was to weep he knew what it was to sorrow he knew what it was to pass through much affliction he knew what it was to be despised he went unto his own and his own received him not the foxes have hoes the birds of the air have nests but the son of God hath not where to lay his head this dear man verily God and verily man walked this wilderness path he knew what it was to pass amongst rebellious mankind his very spirit often assailed he bearing the reproach he indeed feeling often that distress in his holy soul on account of his enemies those that rose up against him even men devils and he bore further the justice of
[26:41] God the wrath due on account of the justice of God against him and all was this this that caused him yea to walk in this path but he gave his back he gave his life a ransom for many though he were a son he learned obedience God spared not his own son he spared him not he gave him oh for rebellious man fallen man such that must forever lie in hell were not salvation free oh I say again is it nothing is it nothing to you all ye that pass by twill be nothing to those that never feel their woe to those that never have brought to realise the weight and burden of sin to those that never groan under indwelling and besetting evils but these awakened out of nature's darkness made to tremble at the majesty of the eternal
[28:13] God yet by the precious teaching of the spirit of God to see in this one Emmanuel God's only begotten son the chosen one of Israel the promised Messiah that one that verily came that one who condescended to stoop even to save uttermost sinners who suffered suffered at the hands of wicked men who suffered at the hands of devils themselves Satan tempted him if thou art the son of God and suffered as we have said at the hands of the justice of the almighty God against sin oh this was the path dost thou see canst thou behold the vital necessity of one thus to walk in these three depths of affliction we feel this if there could have been any other way whereby the justice of
[29:35] God could be vindicated his mercy and his mercy shown unto rebellious man that way would have been appointed for did not Christ cry in the garden if it be possible let this cup pass from me if it be possible let this cup pass from me nevertheless not my will but thine but thine be done if we would speak reverently and carefully if any other way could satisfy those demands of justice if any other way that could be that the glory of God could be upheld his majesty and his justice vindicated oh then would not that prayer that earnest cry what wrong we might say from that holy human soul or the
[30:48] Lamb of God would it not have been heard and answered but this was the why you know this one and only why without the shedding of blood there could be no remission of sin and that blood that blood must be pure holy and spotless near defiled near tainted by anything thus the dear Lamb of God must must pass this way as God he knew the weakness of that human frame supported by divinity enabled to go on and fulfill those purposes of
[31:49] God from all eternity he must need to go I believe yes it is recorded in the following verse he set his face his face like a flint like a flint and I know that I shall not be ashamed this is the very voice of Christ the voice of the Son of God oh here we have revelation of the Lord Jesus he is to be found in the word yea when the eye of faith is given to behold he will be found in the sacred pages of truth the Lord will help me therefore shall I not be confounded therefore have I set my face like a flint and I know that I shall not be ashamed
[32:52] I gave my back to the spiders and my cheeks to them that plot off the hell feel inscribed as it were all this portion of holy writ this resignation this condescension oh this love inscribed or it all was for sinners for helpless sin polluted wretched undone sinners that this work was wrought prosper them oh the love of God is it not revealed here he spared not his only begotten son he spared him not in this pathway those of us who have offspring know know what it is to feel deeply for them in their distress the seasons are the night when we would willingly walk the way even for them
[34:17] God spared not his son he so loved the world he gave him and the Lord Jesus Christ he came willingly came he so loved his church those given into his heart and to redeem he so loved them he went to those great lengths those that utmost lengths to redeem them from their sad condition their hopeless condition their bankrupt souls they've nothing to buy blind slaves to Satan in his hand bondage oh he hath redeemed them he hath paid he hath paid justice exacted that utmost might that
[35:22] Lord Jesus Christ willingly offered himself gave gifts and sacrifices for men towards another office of the high priest another work which they must perform here we have this man this god man in that office of the great high priest one touched with the feeling of our infirmities he gave gifts yea and sacrifices one sacrifice for sin he gave himself greater love hath no man than this than he gave himself gave himself for his friends ye are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command you I gave my butt to the spiders my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair speaks of distress it speaks of anguish it speaks of heart rending experiences and I would in these last few moments seek to direct your thoughts to that holy example set before us here and that path which he verily wrote and which we seek from time to time to meditate upon to consider him consider him that thus gave his back to the smiters and his cheeks to them that plucked off the hair who endured such pain such anguish at the hands of those that rose up against him holy gracious example to those that follow on to those that would be bestowed with the spirit of
[37:26] Christ would have within even a little measure that mind and spirit of the Lord and Lamb he who opened not his mouth against those false accusers he who patiently endured that which was laid upon him he who bore that reproach who as we have expressed made himself of no reputation was willing to suffer even under such derision and such scorning he who was enabled the thought sweetly comes to leave his cause with his holy father to leave his case there in the hands of the holy God of Israel unto God would
[38:26] I commit my cause my witness is in heaven my record is on high said a dear man of God he who knew what it was to walk in some little measure in like paths my witness is in heaven my record is on high I gave my buck to the smithers and my cheek to them that prompt off the hair I hid not my face from shame and spitting from shame and spitting it is against all nature it is against all flesh the in in inclinations but all other seasons when by the power of God within these souls walking in measure in the path of their redeemer are enabled to life passes persuaded that the
[39:38] Lord God will help them persuaded that he will appear for them and so for a season as was with the love of God overseas and all appears to go against them the day of darkness their hour yet that day of triumph shall come that day when those enemies shall be scattered that day when through Christ there shall triumph the Lord God will help me therefore shall I not be confounded he is near traverse just for a moment into the following verses he is near that justifies me who will contend with me if God be for us who can be against us and all these things these paths will bring much hurting us all these paths will bring that one to the feet of
[40:52] Christ to examine themselves know how they will crave that spirit that quiet spirit under oppression that spirit which is revealed here which was in full measure realized in Christ I gave my back to the smiters and my cheeks to them that pluck off the hair I hid not my legs from shame and spitting Jesus Christ and him crucified man so found himself andim and also Thank you.
