1 Timothy

[0:00] As the Lord should be pleased to help me I should call your attention to a subject you will find in the first epistle to Timothy Chapter 3 and the 16th verse And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness God was manifest in the flesh Justified in the spirit Seen of angels Preached unto the Gentiles Believed on in the world Received up into glory The first epistle to Timothy Chapter 3 And the 16th verse

[1:02] You do not need the preacher to tell you That this is a subject with a tremendous depth in it And one in attempting to preach from it Feels a trembling And you in listening Need to feel like it too And to be concerned As to whether You can enter into this beautiful and blessed Truth God was manifest in the flesh And the surest evidence That he was manifest in the flesh Will be If You should be granted a manifestation In your own soul's experience I want as the Lord to help me

[2:05] To look at the subject from One or two viewpoints Of it The setting of it is Very striking For the Apostle Paul was Penning this epistle to Timothy Who was a young man And a young minister Ordained of God But the Apostle Paul Being Paul the aged Was constrained by the Spirit of God To pen this epistle to Timothy Giving him Wonderful counsel As to how matters really should be In one's ministry And in The church of Christ And he says in the immediate Context But if I tarry long That thou mayest know How thou oughtest to behave thyself

[3:08] In the house of God Mark this wording Dear friends The house of God Which is the church of the living God The pillar And ground of the truth And now down through the ages There has been The church of the living God And In every age It has been the pillar And ground of the truth And though earth and hell Have conspired together To oppose it And hinder its progress It has only known One change And that is to increase As people ordained of God To life eternal Have been born into the world And then in his time

[4:11] Born again And made members Of the church Of the living God And all who are so taught of God They contend for the truth There is a word The apostle Paul says For we can do Nothing against the truth But for the truth And even in the world As it is At the present time With hell so evidently Let loose in it Never forget There is the church Of the living God Standing fast In the things of God As the pillar And ground of the truth And ever Being built up In our most holy faith And keep in mind

[5:11] And keep in mind Also what the Savior said Upon this rock I will build my church And the gates of hell Shall not prevail Against it And now In coming to the subject As grace is given To say a little about it And that is all That can be said There have been Tens of thousands Of sermons Preached by men Ordained of God To preach About God Manifesting the flesh But all they have done Is to take just Some buckets full Out of the ocean depths That remain And without controversy Great is the mystery Of godliness God was manifest In the flesh Dear friends

[6:19] It is only In the church Of the living God That this great mystery Of godliness Is without controversy I would say That outside the church Of the living God There is not a subject Beneath the sun About which There is more controversy Than that god Was manifest In the flesh There are millions On earth Who believe not That god Was manifest In the flesh A very solemn Consideration And If you bring the subject Up to Men in the street For them to consider it They will tell you What their mind is about it

[7:19] And their attitude We will not have this man To reign Over us No Depart from us For we desire Not the knowledge Of thee Or thy ways And that is the attitude Of mankind Outside The church Of the living God But inside You ask Any member Inside When I say member I do not mean one Who Especially has a name On a church roll I mean Any sinner Born again And you ask Any sinner Born again And whoever You may ask Or wherever You may ask You will always Get the same answer And it is Without controversy Oh there is no Question in this No

[8:20] All will agree God was manifest In The flesh Yes And they all agree In declaring Neither is there salvation In any other There is given unto heaven Among men None other name Whereby We Can Be saved Ask any sinner Born again What think ye of Christ And he will tell you Compared With Christ In all beside No comeliness I see The one thing Needful Dearest Lord Is to be One with thee Oh I would That it could be That all of you If God in his Mercy Could bring it to pass All of you Could be found In the church Of the living God

[9:21] For if you should Live and die Outside it I will tell you Right away You will see God who was Manifest in the flesh But you will not See him As those in the Church of the living God see him A savior And a great one You will see Him as Your Judge Great is that Scripture We must All appear Before the Judgment seat Of Christ Yes To give an Account of the Things which we Have done in our Body According to that Which we have Done Whether it be Good or bad And now let us Look into this Great subject As the Lord Shall Help us And I want

[10:22] To make this Plain And you dear Young people I drop a word Especially for you The apostle Paul Was inspired By the spirit Of God To pen This word Which I have Announced as The subject And it Tells us God Was Manifest In the flesh Will you dare To say then There is no God I do not Believe there is What you really Mean is You want to Believe That there is No God That you can Live as you Were born Live your own Life Be in the World and of It After the Flesh The things Of the flesh That is the Truth of the Matter And if any Of you should Ever have Such thoughts

[11:22] Alas if any Under Union Chapel roof Should have Such thoughts There is just One word To be said And do you Think on it Ere it is Too late The fool Hath said In his Heart There is No God Oh But this Word tells Us that There is And without Controversy Do not Argue about It Do not Reason about It Do not Fall a prey To wishful Thinking Concerning it No No And without Controversy Great is the Mystery of Godliness God Was Manifest In The flesh And now In opening up

[12:23] The subject Let us Let us now Go to Bethlehem As grace Is given And see The thing That came To pass There And remember It happened Over 1900 Years ago But before Then For just On 4000 Years Patriarchs And prophets And Selmas And all The godly That ever Lived in Those far Back days Look forward To that Day Which they Knew Would Dawn in The world's History When God Would be Made Manifest In The flesh They were Inspired With the Hope of It And good Isaiah

[13:23] Says 700 years Before God Was manifest In the Flesh Unto us A child Is born Unto us A son Is given Yes Do Then Believe What this Word Declares God Was Manifest In the Flesh And not Just Believe it Because History Records It Oh That you Might Believe it Through Having a Manifestation In your Own Souls Experience And that You Might Realize What the Hymn Writer Says Jesus Engrave It On my Heart That Thou The One Thing

[14:24] Needful Art I Would From All Things Parted Be But Never Never Lord From Thee And Now As We Go To Bethlehem And See What Came To Pass There The History Of It Is Very Beautiful To Read But You Must Never Forget When You Go To Bethlehem And See God Was Manifest In The Flesh What He Was Manifested To Do An Arim Writer Has Got Right Down To A Blessed Bedrock Truth Jesus Was Born To Die When Jesus Christ As a Babe Laid In The Manger Cradle At Bethlehem He Had Then A Solemn Awareness

[15:24] As Verily God The Eternal Son Of God In His Divine Nature The Mission He Had Come Down Into The World And For Which He Was Being Born A Babe By Birth Mysterious To Bring To Pass And It Was To Do Love's Redeeming Work It Will Do You Good To Go To Bethlehem It Will Give You A Right Perspective Of Your Life As You Should Live It It Will Help You To Set Up A Standard Whereby You May Follow On To Know The Lord As Long As You Live If You Go To Bethlehem Aright And If You See God As You Will Do By Living Faith Manifest

[16:25] In The Flesh A Little Babe And Every Member A Holy Babe It Will Help You To Reduce To Practice Some Scriptures That Otherwise You Do Not Reduce To Practice As You Should Do Preacher And People Alight Must All Plead Guilty Here If You Were Helped To Go To Bethlehem And See What Came To Pass There If You Discern Foxes Have Holes Birds Of The Air Have Nests But The Son Of Man Had Not Where To Lay His Head And Then You Look Round Your Home With All The Comforts You Have Heaped Together In It And Still Concerned To Eat Many More If You Can I'm Not Fitting Any Caps On I Am Just Telling You The Truth It Will Help You To Learn To Be Content With Such Things As She Have

[17:25] It Will Help You To Understand Godliness With Contentment Is Great Gain It Will Help You To Realize Having Food And Raymond Let Us Be There With Content It Is Wonderful To Contemplate That When God Was Manifest In The Flesh He Came Down To Be Seen Among Men As A Wee Babe And Yet His Shoulders Held Up Heaven And Earth When Mary Held Up Him It Is A Great Line Of Things To Contemplate This Sabbath Morn Dear Friends You And I Need Special Grace To Think Upon It To Purpose And That Our Souls May Be Profited And So Jesus Christ Was

[18:26] God Manifest In The Flesh When He Laid In The Manger Cradle Lowly Babe We Fall Before Thee Jesus We Would Thee Adore To Thee Kingdom Power And Glory Be Ascribe For Ever More Yes God Was Manifest In The Flesh And Now The Word Of God Does Not Give Us Many Details About The Youth Of Jesus Christ As Verily Man But We Do Know And I Read It To You That The Grace Of God Was Upon Him And From His Youth Up He Served The Lord As Verily Man And

[19:27] Kept The Law In Every Jot And Tittle Of Its Demands On One In Life's Morning Or He Did Not Fail In His Youth And In All That He Did And In All That He Said It Was So Evident The Grace Of God Was Upon Him And He Found Favor The Word Of God Tells Us With God And Man But The Great Manifestation Really Is To Be Seen When He Began To Do That Great Work Which He Did For Three Years And More In His Ministry Jesus Who Lived Above The Sky Came Down To Be

[20:27] A Man And Die And In The Bible We May See How Very Good He Used To Be And Now You See That Jesus Christ Comes To John The Baptist To Be Baptized And Thus To Enter On Is Public Ministry Before Men And John The Baptist Is Heaven I Have Thought Sometimes Must Be Two Heavens As He Thinks On The Fact That He Was Granted That Amazing Honor Wondrous Privilege To Baptize Jesus Christ As Beverly Man And Remember What Jesus Christ Said Some Of You Especially Remember It Suffer It To Be So Now For Thus It Becometh

[21:28] Us To Fulfill All Righteousness Yes But When John The Baptist Baptized Jesus Christ What Happened A Voice Was Heard From Heaven God The Father Speaking This Is My Beloved Son In Whom I Am Well Pleased Speaking With Great Reverence I Would Add I Am Well Pleased With His Life Which He Has Already Lived From Baby Days On And Now He Is Going For To Do Love's Redeeming Work I Am Well Pleased In Him And How Was He Made Manifest As God The Spirit Like a Dove Descended And Lighted Upon Him So

[22:28] So That John The Baptist Had The Wonderful Privilege To See The Setting Forth Of The Spirit Of God In The Form Of A Dove And Thus Jesus Christ Was Made Manifest In The Flesh And He Went Forth As I Have Said To Do Love's Redeeming Work And Then That Being Done And Jesus Being Full Of The Holy Ghost Return From Jordan And Was Led By The Spirit Into The Wilderness Being Forty Days Tempted Of The Devil And In Those Days He Did Eat Nothing And When They

[23:28] Were Ended He Afterward Hungered There Was An Amazing Battle Which Jesus Christ Fought And On Our Behalf Remember That That He Might Sucker Them That Are Tempted And He Defeated The Devil At Every Turn And The Devil Had To Leave The Field A Defeated Foe Yes And Remember Forty Days Forty Nights And The Wild Beasts Were There Also In The Devil Who Was Wilder Than All The Wild Beasts That Were There Tempting The Dear Son Of Man God

[24:29] Manifest In The Flesh Oh What A Mercy It Is That You And I Can Look Back And Read The History Of It And Read That Wonderful Scripture In The Hebrews Wherefore He Knoweth How To Sucker Them That Are Tempted Seeing That He Himself Hath Suffered Being Tempted God Was Manifest In The Flesh In The Wilderness Not Only So Think How He Was Manifest In His Wonderful Life As He Lived It From That Time On In Doing Good Think Of The Works That He Did And Think How When John The Baptist Was Brought Into A

[25:29] Low Place And Was In Darkness How Jesus Christ Comforted Him As We Read Now When John Had Heard In The Prison Where He Was Shut Up For Being Faithful In His Ministry When He Had Heard In Prison The Works Of Christ He Sent Two Of His Disciples And Said Unto Them Art Thou He That Should Come Or Do We Look For Another Jesus Answered And Said Unto Them Go And Show John Again Those Things Which Ye Do Hear And See The Blind Receive Their Sight And The Lame Walk The Lepers Are Cleansed And The Deaf Hear The Dead Are Raised Up And The Poor Have The Gospel Preached To Them And Blessed Is He Whosoever Shall Not Be

[26:29] Offended In Me And Now This Is Just A Description For Dear John The Baptist To Realize That The Works Which Were Done Proclaimed Who The Worker Was And That He Was God Manifest In The Flesh How Can This Man Do These Things Said One Except God Be With Him And He Could Have Changed One Word Except God Be In Him And That Is The Truth Of The Matter God Was Manifest In The Flesh And So He Went About He Was So Kind He Cured Poor People Who Were Blind And Many Who Were Sick And Lame He Pitied Them And Did The Same He

[27:30] Delighted In Mercy And His Touch Hath Still Its Ancient Power The Arm Of The Lord Is Not Shortened That It Cannot Save Neither Is His Ear Heavy That It Cannot Hear Blessed Be His Name It Is Jesus Christ The Same Yesterday Day And Today And Forever And While He Was Indeed God Manifest In The Flesh As He Went About Among Men Doing Good Do Not Forget That Human Heart He Still Retines Though Thrown In Highest Bliss And Feels Each Tempted Member's Pains For Our Afflictions His Yea It Is Declared That He Was Manifest In All Our Afflictions He Was Afflicted Whatever

[28:31] Your Case Is Or Whatever Your Circumstances Are Jesus Christ Can Manifest To You Who He Is Yes A Savior Able To Save To The Utter Most Them That Come Unto God By Him And How He Was Made Manifest By The Words Which He Spake Never Man Spake Like This Man And Now See This Man Standing Before The Tomb Where Lazarus Was Buried And The Word Goes For Lazarus Come For And He Came For Bound Hand And Foot Mark That Word In Bound

[29:32] Hand And Foot In His Grave Clothes And He Said To Those Near Loose Him And Let Him Go Yes Truly Never Man Spake Like This Man He Who Spake Like That Lazarus Come For And The Dead Did Hear His Voice And Rose To Light Who Was He He Was God Manifesting The Flesh And You Be Very Very Careful How You Behave Before Him How You Think Upon His Doing The Words Which He Spake Then Remember He That Rejecteth Me And My Words Hath One That Judgeth Him The Word That I Have Spoken

[30:32] It Should Judge Him At The Last Day He Was God Manifesting The Flesh In The Life He Lived Oh The Life He Lived Dear Friends Was A Holy Life And It Was Lived For You And I Hope It Was For Me Every Sinner Born Again Has An Interest In It In Him The Father Never Saw The Least Transgressions Of His Law In Him We Then Perfection View The Saints In Him A Perfect Tool His Father Said At The End Of His Lovely Life This Is My Beloved Son In Whom I Am Well Pleased And Think Of That Mighty Utterance When At Length He Was Found On Calvary's Cross It

[31:32] Is Finished Yes It Is Finished Cried The Lord In His Dying Minute Holy Ghost Repeat The Word Full Salvation Is In It See How He Was God Manifest In The Flesh When Before He Set His Face Steadlessly To Go Up To Jerusalem And Then To Go Up To Calvary's Cross He Went Into Gethsemane's Garden There You See How Great The Salvation Of God For Poor Sinners Like You And I Was To Be That Even Jesus Christ As Verily Man Mark The Word In Verily Man Should Say Father If It Be Possible Let This Cup Pass From Me Nevertheless Not

[32:33] What I Will But Thy Will Be Done There You See God Manifest In The Flesh But He Said The Cup Which My Heavenly Father Hath Given To Me Shall I Not Drink It And He Did Drink It Blessed Be God And You And I Have Got The Wonderful Benefit Of It That You Are Here This Sabbath Morning The Attitude Of Worship Listening To The Preaching Of The Gospel Which Is Just This God Was Manifest In The Flesh And Christ Jesus Came Into The World To Save Sinners Of Whom I Am Chief God Manifest In The Flesh There Is One Manifestation

[33:34] Very Difficult To Put Into Words Because You Must Not Speculate But I Think Of Jesus Christ As He Was Before Pilate's Judgment See And The Things Which Were Said There Which Were Lies False Accusations But He Answered Not A Word No He Could Have Raised His Hand And All His Accusers Would Have Vanished Into Eternity No There He Was As You Read In The Prophecy Of Isaiah And You Do Need To Read It And Ponder It In Your Heart And It Says That He Was Oppressed And

[34:34] He Was Afflicted Margin He Was Oppressed And Yet He Humbled Himself He Was Afflicted Yet He Opened Not His Mouth You Know Dear Friends You And I Have Brought Quite A Deal Of Trouble Into Our Lives Sometimes Because We Have Opened Our Mouths I'm Not Fitting Any Caps On I Mean We Have Sometimes Opened Them Before God And Man Has Not Heard It Only God When You Have Questioned These Dealings When You Have Said All These Things Are Against Me Let Your Consciences Tell You You Have Brought Quite A Deal Of Trouble Into Your Lives Because You Have Not Learned To Keep Silence And Say My Soul Is Silent Before God In His Dealings With Me You Have Opened

[35:34] Your Mouth And Like Jonah You Have Sometimes Felt I Do Well To Be Angry Alas Yet He Opened Not His Mouth He Is Brought As A Lamb To The Slaughter And As A Sheep Before Her Shearers Is Dumb So He Openeth Not His Mouth He Was Taken From Prison And From Judgment And Who Shall Declare His Generation For He Was Cut Off Out Of The Land Of The Living For The Transgression Of My People Was He Stricken And Now Why May We Venture To Ask Why Was It That The Dear Saviour Did Not Open His Mouth When These Sins Which Were Lies Were Hurled Against Him Was Verily Man

[36:34] He Stood There In The Place Of You And I Therefore He Opened Not His Mouth You Might Think On That Prayerfully As The Lord Shall Help You God Was Manifest In The Flesh And There Is That Tremendous Scripture He Was Made Sin For Us Who Knew No Sin That We Might Be Made The Righteousness Of God In Him And Without Controversy Great Is The Mystery Of God Liness God Was Manifest In The Flesh See This Dear Man On Calvary Cross And All Around

[37:34] Him The Majority There Were His Enemies And They Were In Agreement Away With Him Away With Him Crucify Him Crucify Him What Does The Dear Saviour Declare Father Forgive Them For They Know Not What They Do And Therefore It Is We Are Gathered Together This Sabbath Morn That Through This Man God Manifest In The Flesh There Is Preached Unto You The Forgiveness Of Sins God Was Manifest In The Flesh But Then I Look Just A Little At The Amplification Of This Subject

[38:35] God Was Manifest In The Flesh Justified In The Spirit It Would Need Another Sermon To Open That Up Fully But Whatever Men Said About This Man As He Lived His Life On Earth Doing Love's Redeeming Work He Was Ever Justified In The Spirit Because The Spirit Was Poured Upon Him Without Measure And He Was Acknowledged By The Spirit To Be God Manifest In The Flesh And There Is One Scripture Which I Will Read That Will Help You To Realize

[39:35] What That Means And You Should Say Thank You To God As You Ponder It In Your Heart In The End Of The Sabbath As It Began To Dawn Toward The First Day Of The Week Came Mary Magdalene And The Other Mary To See The Sepulchre Listen And Behold There Was A Great Earthquake For The Angel Of The Lord Descended From Heaven And Came And Rolled Back The Stone From The Door And Sat Upon It And His Countenance Was Like Lightning And His Raymond White As Snow What Does That Teach Us What I Have Already Quoted So Often In This Sermon

[40:36] Love's Redeeming Work Was Done Fought The Fight The Battle Won And That Jesus Christ Might Indeed Be Justified In The Spirit God Sent Down The Angel To Roll Away The Stone Jesus Christ As Verily God Could Have Removed The Stone And Come Forth Without Any Angel But He Was To Be Justified That Love's Redeeming Work Was Done And Well Done And God Was Well Pleased With The Doing Of It And So Are You And I If We Are Sinners Taught Of God As I Hope Many Of Us Are Justified In The Spirit And It Says Also Scene Of Angels You Remember The

[41:37] Angels Sang In The Silent Night What Amazement There Must Have Been I Use That Word I Cannot Think Of Any Other To Use But Remember It Is A Spiritual Amazement I Mean What Amazement There Must Have Been Among The Angelic Host When This Great Mystery Of Godliness Was Made Manifest And They Could View It And See In The Manger The Ancient Of Days He Who Was The Eternal Son Of God In His Divine Nature One With The Father The Holy Spirit In The Blessed Trinity And Yet To Be Made Manifest In The Flesh And To Be Seen As Verily God Verily Man In A We Babe Lying In A Manger Cradle Well Might The Angels

[42:37] Be Amazed With A Holy Amazement But I Can Tell You This They Rejoiced To Sing About It Glory To God In The Highest And On Earth Peace Good Will Toward Men And You Read Also That When Jesus Was In Gethsemane's Garden The Battle Was So Fierce That He Fought There That He Was Brought Down Very Very Low As Verily Man And There Appeared An Angel From Heaven Strengthening Him Yes Scene Of Angels And These Angels Are Still Going About Doing That Which Is The Outcome Of Love's Redeeming Work Are They Not All Ministering Spirits Sent

[43:38] Forth To Minister Unto Them Who Should Be Heirs Of Salvation Scene Of Angels And Now Preached Unto The Gentiles You And I Are Gentiles And The Very Fact That You And I Are Gathered Together In The Attitude Of Worship In A Cause Of Truth And Where God Has Long Been Worshipped Is A Real Comment On This Declaration Preached Unto The Gentiles I Can Tell You This Dear Friends It Is A Great Honor To Preach The Gospel Especially When You Realize The Help Of God In Doing It And For You To Be Found Where The Gospel

[44:38] Is Preached With An Ear To Hear It A Heart To Receive It And To Enter Into That Word Blessed Is The People That Know The Joyful Sound They Shall Walk Oh Lord In The Light Of Thy Countenance Yes Preached Unto The Gentiles When The Lord Jesus Rose From The Dead He Recommissioned His Disciples Go Into All The World And Preach The Gospel To Every Creature Yes And That Has Been Done From That Day To This As God Has Raised Men Up To Do It And Whatever You And I May Think About The Church Of Christ As We View It I Am Prepared To Say This That God Has Never Been Short

[45:38] Of Men To Preach You And I Wish God Would Send Out More Sometimes For We Think There Is A Need To Be And So There Is A Need To Be But From God's Viewpoint God Has Never Yet Lacked Them To Preach Unto The Gentiles Wherever They Are Because He Has A Covenant Ordered In All Things Ensure And That Is One Thing Ordered In It That Has The Need Arises So Men Are Raised Up Qualified To Preach The Gospel Sent Forth To Labor Here Or There As God Designs Preached To To The Gentiles And The Apostle Paul Speaks About It Faith Cometh By Hearing Hearing

[46:38] By The Word Of God How Shall They Hear Without A Preacher Listen And How Should They Preach Except They Be Sent And Now That Is The All Important Question If A Man Has Got Thus Said The Lord To Go For To Labor In Word And Doctrine Whatever That Sphere May Be He Will Be Fulfilling This Word Preached Unto The Gentiles And He Will Preach God Was Manifest In The Flesh And Delight To Do It Yes Whether The Congregation Be Few Or Many And Now This Word Goes On God Was Manifest In The Flesh And

[47:39] It Says Believed On In The World I'm Going To Ask You A Question Young And Old Alight I Leave It With Your Consciences I Know What The Answer Is From Most Of You I Wish I Could Feel It Would Be The Answer From Every One Of You This Is The Question Dost Thou Believe On The Son Of God This Word Tells Us That He Is To Be Believed On In The World And What A Wonderful Mercy It Is To Be A Believer Oh There Is A Word I Sometimes Look At In John's Gospel And It It Is A Word Which You Can Ponder Prayerfully Verily Verily I Say Unto

[48:39] You He That Heareth My Word And Believeth On Him That Sent Me Listen Half Everlasting Life And Shall Not Come Into Condemnation But Is Passed From Death Unto Life Believed On In The World Dear Friends Oh What a Wonderful Mercy To Have Faith Though It Be But As A Grain Of Mustard Seed To Believe In God Manifest In The Flesh I Believe In God The Father Almighty Maker Of Heaven And Earth And In His Only Son Jesus Christ Our Lord God Manifest In The

[49:39] Flesh Believed On In The World But I Must Come To The Amen But How Does It Conclude It Tells Us That He Was At Length Received Up Into Glory There Is A Beautiful Presentation Of It In Luke's Gospel And He Led Them Out As Far As To Bethany And He Lifted Up His Hands And Blessed Them And It Came To Pass While He Blessed Them He Was Parted From Them And Carried Up Into Heaven Yes And There He Is He He Has Been There Ever Since He Was Parted From Them And Carried Up

[50:39] Into Heaven He He He Has Been There Ever Since I Say At The Right Hand Of God On Behalf Of Poor Sinners Like You And Me Awake Sweet Gratitude And Sing The Ascended Saviour's Love Sing How He Lives To Carry On His People's Cause Above Received Up Into Glory And Remember If God Should Grant You A Manifestation Of Him In Your Souls Experience And You Be Favoured With Tokens For Good And Remembered With The Favour That He Bears Unto His Dear People On Whose Behalf He Was God Manifest In
