[0:00] Lord, this evening I'll ask your thoughts now for a chapter we read together. The Gospel according to John in the chapter 10, reading from the verse 39.
[0:15] The Gospel according to John in the chapter 10 at the verse 39. Therefore they sought again to take it.
[0:26] But he escaped out of their hand and went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John turned back to house.
[0:40] And there he abode. Many resorted unto him and said, John is no miracle. But all things that John spake of this man were true.
[0:54] And many believe on him there. John chapter 10, verse 39.
[1:05] Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
[1:15] Thank you. Thank you. Yes, ma'am. Welcome to the Sundayish. Thank you. little further, that unspeakable gift, God's dear Son, meant to have loved some of the thoughts of the gratitude that should be and that should flow from our heart, even unto God, for his unspeakable gift.
[1:43] During the afternoon, before coming to chapel this evening, the issue was that someone tarred upon my mind.
[1:55] I'd be like to say to you that they have tarred upon my mind in such a measure of sweetness that I dare not, to have common enough. Because that in my nature we could not, in my view, to be the subject half finished.
[2:14] Although one is truly positive that we shall never finish with the word of God or with even one text in the word of God.
[2:25] Friend, that which reverts this. Preach the preaching that I'm giving. I feel that I don't. So after these words will be deceived, my mind might be brought to confusion upon the other side.
[2:47] So I really make no excuse whatsoever for changing the subject, which is, I owe a very unusual thing for me to do in my living ministry. For the most part I tend to be the one text of the Lord's name.
[3:02] Thank you. Thank you. We must look not upon our ways as all that. We must look the God's ways.
[3:13] So then to consider these few words before you deceive. As you will observe in the reading of the chapter through, the Lord has begun by speaking of these jewels by way of a carol.
[3:30] of the sheep. And of the unity of the shepherd as opposed to the beauty of a hindu.
[3:45] And he goes on to speak for himself as being the good shepherd, the true shepherd. The door is the sheep.
[3:56] I am the door. Find me. If any man can intervene, he shall find the answer. He goes on to express some of the blessed characteristics of the sheep. My sheep hear my voice and I know them. They follow me. And I give unto them eternal life. And they shall never perish. Then we find these jewels, put up stones, and I give unto them eternal life.
[4:13] And they shall never perish. And they shall never perish. And they shall never perish. Then we find these jewels, put up stones against the stone. Even though the Biancan.
[4:25] Jesus she is the Ochisphere.
[4:39] by here they could not receive, they did not accept the truth even though the truth this time came from the lips of one who says I am the way, the truth and the life he was the truth itself they would not receive it, they would not accept indeed they came to this point where they sought a gain to take but he escaped out of there, he went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John first baptized, there he abode and many resorted unto him let us know first then, this place in short for the moment it was a place where many resorted unto him and it was a place where many believed on him sometimes that is sweet of the soul to look back and to mark the place to mark the spot to mark that spot of land where Jesus did me how he gave thy heart and thy husband then was sweet some in the world of God who look back to places where he got me
[6:17] Zacchaeus he could look back to that sycamore that tree in which he blinded when he knew that Jesus was to come that way the Lord himself knowing where this lost sheep was of all the trees that may have been in that road he stood under the very tree where Zacchaeus was this would have been quite a mature tree for one of the branches of it to support the way of a man to give you which branch to look up to find his man and not only that he knew that man by his name and he called him by his name and my sheep hear my voice I know them they follow me without mentioning on that thought you know how Zacchaeus came down and entertained the Lord in his own home that day they ought to make restitution for those things where he had going wrong for him
[7:29] Zacchaeus over the years of his life we don't know anything of him after that time not in detail but he could look back to that place where God met with him so he could look back to the place where God met with him but he came to a certain place I love that word certain he came to a certain place and lay down to rest that night all of those certain spots those certain places in the morning in the morning after that wonderful dream the wonderful promise that God has spoken to me in that dream he could hold I with him or keep in all places with the male goers but bring me again into this land and will not leave me until I've done that which I have spoken to the others Zac never could have gone there never could have gone he could say that but he said also anyway he blessed me there you look back at things where God has blessed you where God has revealed himself where God has spoken to you where God has called you
[8:47] I said there is no close-legged but when he comes down to the closing scenes of his life and there he is now in a foreign land in Egypt giving one of the favour to again set his eyes upon his Joseph not only his son but his son and sons also it's a Jacob who had saved Joseph did not never expect to see him again but in blessing the sons of Joseph I refer to the angel which relieved me which led me all my life to know God he looked back at the start on the right person what about the sword of justice he never could have had the message saw this proud poorly
[9:48] Pharisee then on persecuted the saints of God God stops in his napkin we'll know how Ananias was directed to lay his hands upon him and started to restore and Ananias had to speak to him for God's will to bear my name before the children of Israel before the Gentiles before kings and so on and that was for them Paul himself who not would know never weary but tell him what God had done for him on that Damascus road well here it's pleasant then if we can look back to some spot some place in the Philpagy I don't know perhaps somebody can but you can look back and see the chapel all right you can say yes how many times maybe you was reading your Bible
[11:05] God gave light upon the portion of it and blessed it for your soul you not the God that place by no means you are to be little our take us in the house of God but here that is not the only way to you the Lord to us I remember years ago now speaking to the Lord and one who wanted right to send them out on the board to the transition through her crime as you can use that expression right she lived at the very last time it was a prosperous business I remember her saying on one occasion she could look through every room of that house in one section and God spoke to him but he didn't say God spoke to him
[12:07] I remember saying in one of the rooms she was I don't know the technical term for rooms of these old farm houses I suppose it was saying it's an echo of scullery where she was standing through the eye by facing and one of the children came in to announce to her to birth another child the Lord spoke to him to show you the choice in the blessing of being given of life span life given the Lord spoke this time another song of night another song I know the very light of that dear woman she has prayed not only for that one but others of her family and that particular one of others too she has lived to take an open profession in his name and and and ask many prayers you look back to it some problems some people and grace of
[13:34] Guess you mean these know them through her some personal problem, it couldn't be profitable to go to detail.
[13:49] I remember one night his problem was so heavy for my sleep. He would all sleep with God.
[14:01] It must have been 3 or 4 o'clock in the morning. I remember getting out, getting down beside that bed, and looking at my land, the Lord hummed his own.
[14:13] You know, I never forget the sweetness of being able to do it. What did God ask about?
[14:27] Before they call, I will ask them, and why is they yet speaking my name? During the very dawn day, when the morning post was he asked that problem, the thing going on for many of them.
[14:43] And that letter must have been the post before that meeting, before God. Before they call, I will ask them. One day of speaking my name, right here I can testify to you tonight, I'm sure that some of you can testify to this, that the power of God is a prayer hearing, and a prayer answering.
[15:07] Then, it is not always essential that we should know the very spot, the very place. I say it may be pleasant to know it, it may in some ways be desirable to know it.
[15:25] But the fact is to know that God is necessary. We leave time, we leave the place, in the hand of our gracious life.
[15:37] But Jesus here, when they sought to take him, he escaped out of their hand, and he went away again, beyond Jordan, into the place, into the place.
[15:51] This is what I want to look out for with you for a few months here. But what this place was, we know by the reading of our word, the word of God.
[16:03] That place was the background. The text tells us it was the place where John first baptized.
[16:15] A place beyond Jordan, where John first baptized. Now here it was a place where divine ordinances have been kept.
[16:31] It was a place where the gospel had been preached. That is very clear if you look at the words that are set before us in the third chapter of Matthew's Gospel.
[16:51] That in those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying, Repent ye, for the kingdom of heaven is a time.
[17:05] Here John, preached the preaching that God gave him. He preached repentance. And that, as a passing thought, was the very first doctrine that our Lord himself thought.
[17:25] When he entered into this great work of the ministry, when John had been passed into prison, then came Jesus and said, Repent and believe the gospel. Now John, the priest is here at the Pharaoh.
[17:43] They went out to him, many, from round about Judea and the region of Mount Jordan. They were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.
[17:55] This was done here at the Pharaoh. John indeed baptized with water. He confesses. But he said, There come is one who shall baptize.
[18:13] Not with water, but with the Holy Spirit. The axe is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that brings not more good fruit is few now.
[18:29] The more important, this is the place where the Lord Jesus Christ himself was baptized. He came to John. John said, I need to be baptized at me.
[18:41] Come is thou to me? Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now, for thus it be cometh us to fulfill all righteousness. Then he suffered.
[18:53] It was the place where the Lord himself had been baptized. Now he comes back to this place. And look at the baptism of our Lord.
[19:05] It was the baptism of a nation. For we read that Jesus, when he was baptized, went up. Straight away, out of the water.
[19:21] It was baptism by a nation. It wasn't a matter of putting the finger into water, making some money. It was baptism by a nation.
[19:35] It was baptism by a nation. It was baptism by a nation. It was the place where now Jesus comes to. It was a place where John had made the first disciples.
[19:55] The disciples were made, not more. There were those who recognized, John's ministry. And they became disciples of John.
[20:11] But on one occasion, when John saw Jesus coming to them, look at what he said. He said, He's taken away the sin of the world.
[20:33] The day after, when John again saw Jesus, it was the same message. It wasn't rain repetition. It was the same work. He said, Behold the love of God. And these, some of these disciples of John, they turned.
[20:51] John had. John preached Christ in this spot. And they had found Christ in this spot. They said unto him, Master, where dwellest thou?
[21:03] He said unto them, come and see. They came and saw where he well, and they had bowed with him. That day. This was the place. Where the third of the disciples were called to our Lord.
[21:21] One more thought, I must pass on. It was a place where God had borne witness to his own son. And third among we go to the baptism of the Lord Jesus there.
[21:41] Enjoy. When he came up out of the water, there came light upon him, the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove rested upon him.
[21:52] John saw this. And there came a voice out of heaven, saying, This is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased.
[22:07] What a place for him. That God himself had borne witness to his son. This is the place where the Lord Jesus comes to, as these heavenly Jews, who were so prejudiced against him, sought to take him.
[22:29] But, he escaped out of their hands. He went away going beyond Jordan, into the place where John first had died, then he abode, and many resorted unto him.
[22:46] We've read through the chapter, those who were rejecting his ministry. They sought to take him. They sought to do him harm. They say, He could not do it.
[22:59] John Brunch said, The man is immortal, but his work is done. This wasn't the time when the Jews were to take the Lord, and to be permitted to crucify him.
[23:11] His work was not yet done. It was only when our Lord himself, in his praying, to his Father saying, I have finished the work that he gave us to do.
[23:32] But that work was not yet completed. And they could not take him. So he said, He has held their hands, and he comes here, many resort unto him. Jesus himself knew what he would do.
[23:45] He knew there would be these more hopeful spirits that would come and hear. Because these not only resorted unto him, but in the last verse, and many believed on him.
[23:59] They resorted unto him there, and they believed on him there. This took place amidst a time where there was opposition to the gospel.
[24:16] Opposition to the theology of our Lord. Friend, opposition in itself is no sign of the things.
[24:30] There's no sign of the things. Here were these Jews, these precious Jews, opposing.
[24:45] But it's what did they think of us? If anything here, everything's treasured. It's not. Satan's beginning to roar.
[24:57] Satan's stirring up these Jews. Trying to move them and to act against the Lord. But why here? Because his own kingdom is being shaken.
[25:10] That's why. That's what makes Satan more. Satan cannot bear the gospel of God's grace.
[25:33] Satan will ever see to oppose the work of God. who rest are to convince that he shall come to you.
[25:48] Satan is powerful but Satan is not for power. The Lord turns aside now into this place, a quiet place beyond Jordan into this place where John first had to come.
[26:05] A quiet place, a plain spot where you could enjoy a quarter season unbroken white.
[26:20] But here there were many that came to you. I will not attempt to put a firm limit to where God will be pleased and blessed.
[26:35] Important what? God will be pleased and blessed. Except to say, of course, he would bless his own work. God is a sovereign. He has an undisputed right to govern me and mine.
[26:51] We're very proud. It is in the quiet places where God blesses people. God is a noisy, proud, the rabid world.
[27:15] We've known in our time it has on overall time what men may call their religious rivals. when not hundreds but thousands gathered together.
[27:37] And look at the claim that some of those men have made. God would be nice to say there's never been a real convert out of those religious and they are not the thousands of years.
[27:52] when hundreds yea, even thousands at the close of such a meeting they want. Surrent themselves to Christ, so they say.
[28:06] For in where are they out of our views? They're caught up in emotion. Some help them cry.
[28:22] I know not less love for themselves. They have the exceptions where one may have been brought upon by the Spirit in such a condition.
[28:35] The Lord has a second there. He brought me up on. He's separated from one. He furthered his work with him. I say we must not put a limit to what God will be pleased for you.
[28:48] my dearly great power it is in the quiet places. Give you an endless additional word of God.
[29:02] My mind goes to the dear town lady Lord. No doubt a very prosperous business woman of the day.
[29:14] She was a seller of thought. she was found in Philippi. A place where business was painful.
[29:31] But she turns aside from all things on the Sabbath day. And she goes down there by a riverside with a few more godly women. We don't think there's a mountain on.
[29:45] With these daughters when she goes down by the riverside. There it was. The Lord directed his sermon to the Apostle Paul.
[29:56] Come to Christ. Then he preached the good years. The glorious Johnson of Jesus Christ.
[30:07] And I hear the Lord call that word to wait for me. He went into the day of the day to our heart. The Lord opened her head the Lord opened her heart.
[30:18] She did depend upon those things spoke before. She became a baptized believer. One of the early contacts.
[30:32] One of the forming members of the church of God. You look how quietly they were there by little groups.
[30:44] I can imagine I did imagine here of them. Follow my thought. Paul didn't preach to that little company by the river side when he would have done it past still.
[30:57] When he was condemning greater numbers for their idol worship he didn't offer his message here he still preached Christ that was ever his desire. I can picture him down there by that river side of the city there quite little another one person reasoning about the scriptures still said the word of God before.
[31:28] The God that prayed the world and blessed you. those dear women they were there with a desire to hear with a desire to learn because it's just how these come here even to our world.
[31:47] Many resorted up to them. They come with a desire to hear with a desire to learn. It wasn't flesh excitement on here a healthy condition is when the soul is soul thought.
[32:06] It's a healthy mission in a way in which to hear and to hear profitably the gospel. Oh what a time this was. A time when there was a great desire of many many souls.
[32:22] Furthermore many believed. I hear this is the time we can expect. I use this thought rightly between we can expect the work we want.
[32:37] I know these are we despising you among us. See for the first time here we today you have come before you to preach the gospel.
[32:54] we we must have numbers to expect the grace and peace. You can open the word and have to see.
[33:07] the old misdemeanors used to say if you never impress an empty seat impress you where there are a number you can expect the word to enter me or some will say well don't forget the Lord himself went to Samaria's well for what?
[33:37] you you certainly went to Samaria as well certainly sat upon that well certainly that Samaritan woman came to her but what did she do?
[33:53] when she received a blessing in her soul she went and told others who brought them to Jesus and those others that she brought they said now we believe not because of thy work but because we have heard in ourselves I don't know how much we have fish in here but actually you can't catch fish with a rock I don't know how much we have I mean some of you is a girl in a holiday sleep going out half new grip and that's what she I suppose she became 12 I said the birds they said the birds remember the lines were given to us he was going to cast these lines we're catching up the track the birds say oh I don't want we're catching when we came to a point where the fishman got back he said he passed the line or something and I hear he couldn't do anything else we're catching that between the ten of us we were catching dozens literally dozens as soon as he passed the line and got the rock you might say well the fishman we were the show the fishman we were the fishman whoever no fish we could still come to have life with no fish all my hearers preach the gospel whether it is gathered together then with the expect to fulfill
[35:30] God's word faith comes by hearing not to hear have all faith come faith comes by hearing and hear him by the word of God many he exhorted unto him and many believed on him there was a time when nothing else needed to be said we don't know what the Lord's faith was doing certainly whatever his faith was true because he is true what a cheering factor was in this place many believed on him there there he abode he could rest for this God and then he's thought it was a place where John refers back times and here is seen the fruit of John's word on you and also do not labor and they they may sometimes grieve over the bit of apparent result of their lambs still at the marty's in the morning so do I see in the evening the polvo
[36:48] I think I don't know it's certain but looking through the references in the life of John before coming to chapter and see it would appear it would appear that this time John was there John being there you will know how John for his faithfulness to his master spoke against heron to take him his brother's wife under all of them he was a faithful servant he spoke he spoke God's word for this it cast him firstly in prison and then he cast him his life and you look where John was he was a poor man he was so faithful in his ministry and now he's in this lower place he's in the prison he calls two of his disciples to him he says to them go and say go to
[38:03] Jesus go and say heart thou he that shall come for look please my hero this is John this is John who baptized his Lord this was John who had seen the spirit descended in the form of a dove and rest upon him this is John who had heard his Lord say this is mighty mighty son in whom I am well pleased this is John who had looked upon the Lord and who said behold I am God I will be a true God and look to you and look to you walking away and left his out says the Lord go and tell John again go and tell him again think he was serious
[39:05] God and drauf over him against he people and everything the aba himself there's no doubt on the Spirit's application of the message straight to John a little further in that race soon a job comes down now we've got from these three verses a fruit of what John's work of these as these many resorting unto him they said John did no miracle but all the things that John spake of this man were fruit his ladies weren't in that his ladies were as the word God ever tells us he was first a blood and then the four four in the end the good partners now these
[40:14] I don't know who these were these many that resorted unto him they said John did no miracle that all things that John spake of this man were true here they were listening to what Jesus was saying they preached to listen to what John said and my view there is no variation there is no variation for the gospel we need the same gospel today as it was in our Lord's own name we need the same truth preached today as the apostles preached whether you look at Peter or James or Barnes or calling himself Timothy Titus fellow laborers it's the same gospel what is that gospel my hero all expresses it like this he turned to know nothing about men save Jesus Christ and in crucibite they'll say these all things that John spake of this man were fruit so John's ministry obviously was speaking this man and here this is all we have to give today is Christ bear in mind there is no such thing as a Christ in the gospel
[41:41] Christ is Lord the scriptures in the Old Testament sometimes you may well have to search and to pray the spirit will open it up your understanding to find a name by your faith remember reading once a one greatest man speaking to a younger man in the ministry he said well he said in your ministry if you come to a text and you can't find Christ in the text put it there really man that was the foolish thing to make really what the man was saying this man was priest he thought that Christ really isn't and yet reversely Christ is every man he is every the eyes of the Lord and every thanks he called the evil the good you thought that Christ really is no man can do that but we are exhorted to preach the word and the ministry of the season and the other season and this is what
[42:56] John does and there are others who testify in this and this last verse might have an application to John's ministry many believe God in there no since he thought where he at first back is certainly has its thought in that which is and many believe God in there their believing was a solid kind of thing that's what we want we don't want that we want that which is real we want real things these could give a reason for what they believe because when they compared it to what they'd already heard it's still suffering you compare your hearing to the word of God what said the scripture come back to the scripture if it agrees with the word of God you've got nothing to hear if it disagrees with the word of God you've done no servant of God is commissioned to preach that which is outside the word of God the commission is this to point to his redeeming blood and say behold the way to God to preach
[44:17] Christ then again by the grace of God we should be able to say I have finished my grace I run my grace finished my grace thanks for he's laid up for me a crown of grace not the of God but for all them who are faithful in that same call and pray on Jesus so this morning speaking of God's unspeakable gift given unto him are all the friends all the friends in that glorious nation where he's given people to come many who lived on him there this is the man that John spoke of this is the man that John spoke of they believed on I mean this is what he did for this is what he came to his earth for this is what he suffered for this is what he died for the soul might be brought to the saving of self but that question before this morning that line that does that believe on the son of
[45:40] God it is an important question why would be God that we make each no idea to give a right consideration to that we believe on the son of God this is why we got the word of God before us this is why the Bible is human to us may we search the scripture right for they are language testifying in this time that my that will that will be to guide us because we know of or any that shall die in this the you believe and the son of God he that believes in this chapter of this gospel last verse he that believe in the son hath everlasting life he that believe that not the son shall not see light but the rot of
[46:51] God that died on him my hear that thanks he speaks your condition for it and mine the love of the believer and the love of unbeliever my hear we must be one believer just there to believe the son of God the Lord is very emphatic upon me so I can't go to God but go back to Roman and I spoke to this son of the 8 chapter again he speaks to the Jews when he said I go my way he shall die in your sins whither I go he cannot come in verse 22 he said the Jews will he kill himself because he said with an idea ye cannot come he said unto them ye are from beneath
[47:52] I am from above ye are of this world I am of this world I said therefore unto you that ye shall die in your sins for this is the word for if ye believe not that I am paid he shall die in your sins here to you believe God will unite the Lord bless the broken God me bless all man all Blast those
