Enduring Grace (Quality: Good)

[0:00] Absolute dependence on the Lord for his help I ask your attention to Hebrews chapter 11 verse 27 The epistle of Paul to the Hebrews chapter 11 verse 27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king for he endured as seeing him who is invisible By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king for he endured as seeing him who is invisible He tried to declare that the person here was a child of grace

[1:01] And this is only by grace that he, by faith, forsook Egypt He dwelt in Egypt, you and I dwell in this world But if by grace we are called out of nature's darkness the world will not be our rest anymore For we shall see its polluted state And we hope that the Lord will grant us again that help that is needed to speak a few more things that I believe is in this word By faith he forsook Egypt It is a wonderful mercy my friends We must turn from the literal Moses forsook Egypt twice Once when he was found out to be the man who killed the Egyptian

[2:06] And he forsook Egypt And he forsook Egypt When through the providence of God And the merciful provision of the Passover lamb He and Israel forsook Egypt And went on their way forty years Through the wilderness to Canyon And there before he died he had a view of Canyon But he was not allowed to enter into it And there were various purposes of God in that That we must keep to this word Now he forsook Egypt You and I are in this world of sin and woe And without going over anything Of the morning's discourse By nature we are satisfied with Egypt Or this world And it is only by grace That we are brought out of it

[3:06] Not to trust it Be in it of course But not of it Not to walk about like a Pharisee But as a pilgrim And a stranger on the earth I thought of one or two I was thinking this afternoon Of one or two of those dear characters in the scriptures That by grace By faith They forsook this world of sin and woe We mentioned this morning Saul of Tarsus Wonderful they didn't forsake As Moses did Egypt They were brought out They were drawn out They were called out Called out of nature's darkness Called out of false religion Separated eternally And that's how they forsook it And I thought you know If you read Of his remarkable conversion

[4:08] As recorded in the ninth of the Acts You know when he was Saul of Tarsus He had many friends in this world When he was Paul the Apostle Those same friends Became his enemies If you read again Those remarkable events of his conversion It wasn't long before he preached But it wasn't long before they attempted to kill him Dear friends It's a word isn't it Where's your friends?

[4:41] If they're in this world Then you've not forsook this world But if they're amongst the children of God Then there is a forsaken of the world And the friends of the world too They learn a different language You know in Zion That the world don't understand And the language of the world becomes Indeed an abomination To the children of God The prospects of the world is death The prospect of Zion is peace and joy And eternal life in Christ Jesus No offering is made There's a drawing And there is a calling And that calling is without repentance And those dear souls who forsake this world The world that is dead in trespasses and sins And the world of false religion too

[5:44] My friends are in that pathway which leads to glory But then I thought of the dear handmaiden Ruth She was of Noab The same as all Pah was And by marriage you might say By divine providence She was joined to Naomi But there was more than a marital joining There was more than a union A marriage union that joined them Because as you know Often it is expressed from this pulpit There was in the heart of Ruth A cleaving A cleaving Now that's my friend's grace That far exceeds any natural union Oh bless God for a natural union That brings in a measure Natural love

[6:44] But where there is a cleaving To the people of God It is spiritual And it is profitable And it can never be separated And death itself can't separate it My friends these are truths But you can trace them out in Old Testament scriptures And do you remember what she said Entreat me not to leave The author returned from following after thee For whither thou goest I must go And so on and so forth Where thou lodgest I will lodge Thy people shall be my people And thy God my God Where thou diest will I die Where is that?

[7:31] Where is that my friends? Where are you going to die? My friends you'll die If you're a child of grace On the covenant And you'll be safe and secure For all eternity Where thou diest will I die There will I be buried The Lord do so to me And more also If all but death part They and me By faith he forsook Egypt Not fearing the wrath of the king Oh my friends This is not As I said this morning This is not a recluse That we're talking about This is not some hermit That shuts himself up in somewhere This is in heart and affection From the world And the things of the world And the ways of the world If you and I are one

[8:33] That forsake the world It's because The fear of God Is in our heart And you remember What Nehemiah said So did not I Because of the fear of God Not like Saul of Tarsus So did not I Because I was better Not like the Pharisee Who went to the temple To pray When he said I'm not As other men are Extortioners Unjust Or even as this publican My friends One of the things About the fear of God Which is a grace Will not only Humbly separate you From the world In all its deadness And falseness But the very grace of God Will humble you You'll sing then Yes the very worst of sinners Who upon his grace When I shall have endless bliss Be winners And shall sing beyond the skies

[9:34] By faith he forsook Egypt And doesn't Egypt Doesn't this world cling But my friends It can only cling To the old nature It's got nothing To cling to In that new nature Of grace Not there Does it cling But it clings To old nature But oh How necessary Is the fear of God How necessary Is that grace And a child of grace Has to pray more For that grace My friends It is the gift of God But oh How soon A child of God Can As it were Let go of it Not that he will be Unsaved Or anything like that But my thoughts went And so it's possible My friends Whilst you live In this flesh That your mind And affections Might again be turned To those things

[10:35] That you would be Separated from In past times My thoughts went To the apostles And that account Of the Period of time From the death Of Jesus To the resurrection Of Jesus Where were they found Well my friends Where their natural Heart was found Some of them was Peter said To the disciples I go a fishing And they said We'll come with you Well should it be so Should it be so My friends I find this You know That you can't Throw stones At Peter But his heart Is the same As anyone else's His natural Feelings His tendencies All those things Which are in the Natural mind Even of a believer

[11:36] My friends Turn them If unchecked By grace Turn them To the things Of time And sense And they find Themselves going After them If not literally But in affection And I find this You know The closer you live To worldly things The more barren Your soul is The closer you The closer you Imbibe worldly Things The deadness Of your soul Is felt Very sullen My friends When you find The withdrawing Of the spirit And a sensible Sensible Withdrawing Of the spirit And my friends You've only got to Look and see why It's something Worldly That's doing it And the Lord Withdraws his spirit And his People will Mourn over it And will Go after him

[12:37] Again By faith He forsook Egypt Not fear In the wrath Of the king And all the time The grace And mercy Of God Is in exercise All the time Living faith Is working Within the soul My friends You'll not fear The wrath Of the king We spoke of him Who is the prince Of this world Prince of the power Of the air What the dear Apostle writes What he calls him Or describes him In the second chapter Of the Ephesians Wherein in time past You walked according To the course Of this world According to the prince Of the power Of the air The spirit That now worketh In the children Of disobedience Among whom also We all had our Conversation in times Past In the lusts Of our flesh Fulfilling the desires Of the flesh And of the mind

[13:37] And were by nature The children of wrath Even as others There's only one man That's been born With grace And that was John the Baptist I mean from The point of view Of humanity But most of us What I was going to say All of us If we are Under grace We'll have to Solemnly realise That we may Make attempts To forsake But we take it With us You know all the time You carry this body Of sin and death About My friends You find That it's your Greatest enemy And your And it is that Which opposes The ways of God We must go on a bit Not fearing Not fearing the wrath Of the king For he endured Now He endured But not in himself

[14:38] This Gracious soul This child of grace This brand That's plucked From the burning From the fire He will endure Not in himself Of course He will know His own weakness He will find His own destitution His inability He can't keep himself That's why it's recorded Kept by the power of God Through faith Unto salvation My friends The enduring here Is not the work Of man But the gracious Blessing Of living faith And within the soul For he endured And is it not Would it not be right To say Would you not Agree with me In this My friends It is daily And sometimes hourly

[15:38] When you find You find a need Of enduring For he endured Who then Can keep alive Your soul It's very comforting To know What the apostle Wrote to the church At Philippi Being confident Of this very thing That he Which hath begun A good work In you Will perform it Unto the day Of Jesus Christ But you know The enduring That is spoken Of here Is against All that Comes against It All that Comes against It Let me go Back again To my Off Words Concerning Jonah Jonah Was disobedient And the Lord Chastened him But he endured

[16:40] That chastening Why Because the life Of God In his soul Could not be Put out But he was Brought very low My friends There's some Very low Places to walk In the Spiritual experiences Of God's people Very low And very dark Places Sometimes You wonder Whether the Spark of Spiritual life Is still Alive And you Walk in these Dark places You know But you Endure Not because You're enduring Not because It's some Movement of The mind Centred upon This or That My friends Because the Lord will keep Your soul Alive Though it be In times of Famine You remember You that Have read The Pilgrim's Progress So that Example of That fire There was A man Pouring Oil On the Fire And if

[17:41] You go Around the Other side Of that Fire There was A man Pouring Water On it And all The time That oil Was on It The fire Burned And indeed It never Did go Out But it's Like that My friends In the Life of God In your Soul It's To endure Unto The end And they That endure Unto The end Shall Be Saved But They will Not endure Anything Of the Pathway In their Own strength I will Go in The strength Of the Lord God David said God is Our refuge And strength A very Present help In times Of trouble And so On My friends The enduring Here Is As that Life of God In the Soul Is Maintained And that's The very Grace Of God In the Soul The life Of God Is The eternal Life That's there By The quickening Effect Of the Spirit But then The life Of God In the Soul So The fruit

[18:43] Of the Spirit Is gracious Faith And if You've got Faith Which is The gift Of God You'll have A faith That's Tried And as Again As I Reminded you Recently What the Apostle Said to the Church At Corinth Though it Be tried With fire My friends Though it Be tried With fire For he Endured And if You've got A real Religion It will Come under That It's It's very Easy to Say you Endure When there's Nothing Against it When it's All plain Sailing When it is All comfortable Flat ground Walking And there's No obstacles To it And there's No oppression The enemy's Quiet And self Also And so you Sail along As it were In the Sparks of Your own Kindling My friends Enduring

[19:43] Is a word That surely Must describe The hardness Of the way And the Opposition To the Grace of God Enduring Oh how Shall we Endure How How indeed Shall we Endure Do you Ever wonder How you Will Do you Ever wake In the Morning And wonder How you'll Get through This day You come Down to Very low Places In Experience There seems So much Of the Tempter's Power To pull You down And then Perhaps Somebody might Say a word Which May be Received By the Soul As it were And that Brings you Down Distresses You It's very Strange my Friends but The simplest Of words Spoken Out of Out of Spirit Brings Distress And brings Comfort Brings no Comfort But we

[20:44] Have as it Were the Remedy to This or The cause Of this Enduring For he Endured as Seeing him Who is Invisible All Well my Friends there Is a Religion In the Word of God Which we Don't Want And that's The religion Of the Of those That lived In Athens To the Unknown God It was Portrayed It was Portrayed The apostles spoke of the Unknown God to them To the Athenians But my friends there is a religion which is Begun of God And of which will continue for he endured a See in him Who is Invisible Invisible to the Natural Eye No man has seen God at any time It is recorded No man here In this world of sin and woe My friends can say that they have seen the Lord

[21:44] Not in a natural view But I hope some of us can say we've seen him by the eye of faith And therefore my friends if you've seen him by the eye of faith It is to him that you are indeed found seeking And waiting And watching upon For he endured As seeing him There is another part you know Another way that we might view this word The poet said of Christ What he endured No tongue can tell To save our souls From death and hell And sometimes In the life of a child of grace When Full of self-pity And you look inside And you moan and groan over This that and the other Which pull you down And distress you And cause you darkness Sometimes The Holy Spirit is pleased to come

[22:45] And lift the eye of faith Into the glories of Emmanuel's land And to see him Whose visage was more marred Than any man Whose burden Was more heavy than any man has carried Who was distressed both in mind and body Over his walk and pathway As the believer's surety There's sometimes some sweet comforts you know When you have a view by faith of the Lord Jesus Christ And it puts things in perspective And it makes a believer see And teaches him to see My friends What it is he endured And it's nothing that you endure To be compared to it The Lord Jesus Christ also Right through the word of God For his people Leaves for their comfort The great and precious promises

[23:45] And those precious promises Not stolen By a child of God But applied by the Spirit Will cause you to Know enduring grace We spoke Or it came to mind Didn't it Of the time of the apostle When he had a thorn in the flesh A messenger of Satan And it must have been A very sad time with him Because he prayed against it Many times in his tribulations And persecutions And many times in his oppression They rejoiced Because they were found Worthy to suffer For the name of Christ But on that occasion It must have been painful Because he prayed three times To be rid of it But then we read this And he said unto me

[24:46] My grace is sufficient And if you and I Are brought into that Possession of that sufficient grace My friends You'll endure But as I believe I quoted in prayer The poet's words In thy presence In thy presence I am happy In thy presence I endure In thy presence All afflictions I can easily endure I've got it wrong But you know what I mean My friends The Lord's presence You will endure You look at that word Which Moses gave To Joshua In the 31st of Deuteronomy He was as it were Giving over to Joshua The burden The power And the authority Of Israel And he was soon to die But my friends

[25:48] Such a burden And such an authority Was accompanied With some sweet And sacred words And the Lord He it is That doth go before thee He will be with thee He will not fail thee Nor forsake thee And so on My friends You will endure then It's when you And I Come into places Where Well there seems No help The heavens Are like brass There's a withhold In his presence And he's silent Through the word Of his grace And you wonder How you'll keep going So throughout The word of God To the child of grace There are these Precious promises Fear not I am with thee Oh be not dismayed I am thy God And will still Give thee aid Ask strengthen thee Help thee

[26:48] And cause thee To stand upheld By my righteous Omnipotent hand But as a child of grace Will learn My friends They will have this To support them In this enduring And that's an unchangeable And a faithful God Oh it is a wonder Of wonders you know Oh do you not cry out Over the sin of unbelief Do you not cry out Of your doubts and fears Do you not cry out Because well you're ready To give up In effect Then the Lord So graciously comes And reminds you Of his faithfulness We Often Think of those words And perhaps It may be That some of you May think about it As you come to the end Of Of this year

[27:49] I often do Think about it Those of you Who have made An open profession And those of you Who trust In an unchangeable And faithful God The words of Jesus In Luke 22 When I sent you Without purse Or script Or shoes Lacte anything And they said Nothing My friends So long as the Lord Is sweetly able And he is able But sweetly willing To come And graciously Encourage a poor sinner By his promises And by visits From himself And from the word Of his grace Spoken graciously Into the soul There will be A continuing You will never Go a step In the pathway Of faith My friends

[28:50] In your own strength You may look And there's a lesson To be learned Is there not In the book Of Joshua You remember They went out Against AI And their view Of AI Was that it was Of no problem It was a fight They would easily win There wasn't too many AI to worry about So let not All of us Go up They said And so Shall we say Comparatively few The fighting Men of Israel Went up against AI And they lost And why was it Because there was Sin in the camp Because there was A A matter which Was displeasing To God And for which He withdrew His help My friends They were brought Into utter confusion And they suffered Because of it Now that had To be dealt with

[29:50] And when it was Dealt with Then they went Again to AI And overrun it For he endured As seeing him Who is invisible But then of course You know that It's not only A spiritual path The Lord Help us to look At your State of your Own soul There's been Some sweet seasons As to not Believer When he's been Precious in the Nearness of him In his visits With Something shining Of his love And he's spoken Precious things To you Concerning your Salvation Be assured And you've Gone on in that Sweet path And place Rejoicing in Hope And the glory Of God And looking Forward as it Were anticipation Of the day When you'll be In heaven With Christ But then what

[30:53] Of fresh Inroads of sin What are those Times when In the Bitterness of Your soul You realise My friends That there is Iniquity Still there Or it may be By slips And falls You come into Places where Your conscience Is very Aware And makes you Aware That you're Still a sinner For he endured As seeing him Who is invisible My friends What does it Mean Well may the Precious spirit Reveal the Truth here When you can And when you And I mean In the word When you can When you're Brought by Living faith To look to Calvary To where the Lamb was Stain When your Eyes of faith May be Indeed set

[31:53] Upon him Who endured The cross Despising the Shame And is now Set down At the right Hand of the Father When you have Another view Of the remedy Wonderful mercy My friends That you can As it were Renew your Strength Your spiritual Strength then And fill The sweet Application Of that Cleansing blood And it brings Peace to the Conscience For he Endured As seeing Him Who is Invisible My friends That is where The strength Will lie Of a child Of God In the Blessed Person Of Christ It may Be that You find Yourselves In Under the Tempter's Power again And who Can endure There is no Sin in Temptation The sin

[32:54] Is committed When you Fall into Temptation When you Sin by The Temptation But my Friends The tempter Has great Power Great Persuasions He said To our First Parents Hath God Said And he Almost And it's a Very solemn Thing to Say this You know But he Almost as it Were to Say what Is forgiveness With him He points Out that You've been Forgiven So fresh Sins will Be Pardoned Shall we Sin that Grace may Abound God forbid The apostle Wrote My friends If you know What a Seared Conscience Is You'll Wonder how You'll Stand Whether you Are right After all Whether you Should be Found with The redeemed In glory But my Friends What mercy There is And the Grace of Repentance

[33:54] Be granted To each Of us Then there's Enduring There's a Looking again To the Person of Christ For forgiveness There's a Looking again To that Precious Blood That flowed That Peace Speaking Blood Of Jesus That brought Peace to The conscience To the Church of Christ To you And I Personally We hope And there's Looking again To that Blood By faith He forsook Egypt Not fearing The wrath Of the King But For he Endured As seeing Him as Invisible And You might Use an Illustration Here for Example My friends We endure Day by day Naturally Because natural Strength is Given We rise From our Bed In the Morning With strength Sufficient For the Day It will Not be

[34:55] Always Like that Because there Will be a Last day But as far As far as The spiritual Pathway Of the Child of God Is Concerned My Friends There is A renewing And there Is a Reviving And this Is how These Dear Souls Carry on In the Way In the Way Have you Never Come to A Place It's a Very Sad Place When you Come to The Conclusion That you're Out of The Secret It You might Come again To the Sanctuary Of God And have To prove What In I just Servanted There is Nothing Not because There's any Fault in The Word Of God Or in The Ministry Of The Word Of God But to Your Poor Wretched Soul It Seems As though God Has Forsaken You So What Are you Going To Do My

[35:56] Friends If It's Not Real The Work Of The Spiritual Work In Your Soul If It's Not Of God You'll Give It Up And You'll Go Back And Walk No More With Him But If It's Real And God's Work Is Real And It Will Stand Those Times Of Famine And You'll Go Again As It Were And You'll Look Again Towards His Holy Temple You Will Lay Your Case Once More Before Him You'll Go With That Exercise Soul And Real Gracious Faith That Was Found In Esther And When She Went Before The King How Hopeless Was The Case My Friends It's A Typical Example Of A Child Of God The Burden Was Great Upon Esther Her People Were To Be Annihilated Hopelessness

[36:56] But Then You Know Came Venture In Faith I Will Go In Unto The King Which Is Not Lawful In Those Days You Stood To Live Or Die Upon The Approbation Of The King She Had Not Been Called To Go In So She Had No Grounds To Go On She Had One Ground To Go On And That Was Venture In Faith I Will Go In Unto The King And If I Perish I Perish I Can But What Does The Hymn Say I Can But Perish If I Go I Am Resolved To Try For If I Stay Away I Know I Shall Forever Die My Friends That's Venturing Faith For He Endured As Seeing Him Who Is Invisible Looking

[37:58] To Him Who Was Crucified Waiting Upon Him Who Was The Subject Of Satan's Oppression And Distress Who Had The Powers Who Has The Power Of Life And Death In His Hand He That For His People's Sake Gave His Life That They Might Live Oh My Friends As Everything In This Glorious Person Though He Is Invisible He Endured As Seeing Him And Tracing His Footsteps And Sometimes You Know The Poor Child Of God Loses Sight Of Jesus Does He Not You're Not Always Favored With His Presence You're Not Always Favored With His A View By Faith Of Jesus The It's A hymn That's Got This Line About The

[38:58] Darkest Path Are Walked Alone So What Are You Going To Do Child Of God When You Lose Sight Of Your Lord Jesus Christ There's No Standing Still There's No Sitting Still In Such A Place My Friends There Is This Gracious Faith Oh May He Implant It In Part To You This Glorious Faith To Trust Him When You Can't Trace Him But Go Back To The Word Of His Grace Which Is From Genesis To Revelation There For The People Of God And There They Must Plead As It Is Presented To Them It's Their Form Of Argument Taking The Word Of God In Its Promise And In Its Blessedness And Plead It Before The Lord Not Taking It As It Were As You're Mindful Of The Suitability Of This Word Or That But As The Lord Will So Drop It Into Plead

[40:00] It Before Him Oh Who Has Not Realised The The Mercy Of Such Word The Lord Spoke It Into The Heart On One Occasion And Call Upon Me In The Day Of Trouble I Will Deliver Thee And Thou Shalt Glorify Me My Friends You've Got To Be In A Day Of Trouble To Know What That Means But It Is His Holy Word It Is As It Were And I Use It Very Carefully It's Like A Sweet Invitation Isn't It Come Unto Me All Ye That Are That Labour And Are Heavy Laden And I Will Give You Rest Oh See Seeing Him Going To Him In Prayer And Supplication Venturing Upon His Name Pleased For His Appearance Being Emptied Out Of Self And That's A Good Thing It's

[41:00] Profitable And Also Emptied Out Of Resting On Anything But Himself My Friends It is Surely A Time When There Is No Endurance Unless He Appears There's No Going On Unless He Appears For He Endured As Seeing Him Who Is Invisible And What Wonderful Provision Does The Gospel Make Known And The Person Of Christ Is That Provision Which Lifts The Soul From Distress And Darkness And They Go On A Few More Steps Along This Wilderness Way By Faith He Forsook Egypt Not Fearing The Wrath Of The King I Said This Morning I Do Not Wish To Judge The Lord

[42:01] Keep Us From Being Judge Over Anybody's Religion My Friends But Oh Hell It Is So So So So When You Realize The Religion Of The Day It Seems To Be A Mixing Of The Two Together The World And Christ It Won't Do You Know It Won't Do It Cannot Be Right My Friends If Grace Separated You From Your Fellow Men Put The Fear Of God In Your Heart Made You Seek For Jesus My Friends What Profit Will It Be To Your Soul If You On The One Hand Are Openly In Religion And On The Other Hand Carelessly In The World There Is To Be A Forsaken It's In Heart And Affection I

[43:01] Say It Again It Must Never Be Mixed Up With Those Sort Of Characters Who Think That They Can Walk A Holy Life By Being Shut Away My Friends There's No Such Way To A Child Of God It's Utter Foolishness But It's In Heart And Affection Where The World Is To Be Forsaken And There's A Going On Taking Up One's Cross And Following Him And Looking To Him For Every Grace And Favor And Every Comfort And Mercy And For Confirmations Too And Who Not Who Does Not As A Child Of God Need Confirmations As To His Path Being The Path Of A Child Of Grace By Faith He Forsook Egypt Not Fearing The Wrath Of The King For He Endured Now The Lord Brought A Way Of

[44:01] Utterly Forsaken Egypt And The Lord Has Given Away My Friends In The Case Of Israel It Was The Passover Lamb In The Provision Of That Passover Lamb There Was Blood Shed And That Blood Was The Surety Was The Substitute For Israel All The Time They Stayed In Doors All The Time They Had That Blood Over Them They Were Safe The Destroyed Angel Couldn't Touch Them They Came My Friends To The Red Sea They Murmered As We Reminded You This Morning But They Passed Through The Red Sea As On Dry Ground It Was The Lord's Provision They Forsook Egypt They Saw Pharaoh No More Because He Was Drowned In The Red Sea

[45:02] Oh May You And I Find That Mercy And Feel The Comfort My Friends That Blood Has Been Shed For The Eternal Safety Of The People Of God That You Might Find It To Be Your Refuge And Hiding Place At All Times Plead That Blood Before The Lord It Is To Be Pleaded It Is Through That Blood There Is Cleansing And Pardon And Forgiveness But I Looked At A hymn Last Night It Just Dropped In It Took Me Back A Few Years So Took Me Back To The Ministry Of Stanley Dells And It Is A Him He Loved Go Ye That Rest Upon The Law And Toil And Seek Salvation There Look To The Flame That Moses Saw And Shrink And
