Gap after 14 minutes as tape is turned over
[0:00] The 14th chapter of the Gospel according to Luke, which I would ask your attention this evening of the Lord to help me. And bringing hither the poor and the blind, and the whole and the blind, and the servant said, Lord it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.
[0:44] And the Lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and henges, and compel them to come in, that thy house may be filled.
[0:57] For I say unto you, that none of those men which were mitten shall face of my supper. Verses 21-24 of the 14th chapter of the Gospel according to Luke.
[1:14] So the servant came and showed his Lord these things. I realized, friends, that in the Buddhist sense and application of this truth, it could be said that if this applies to God, and that the servants of God do come and tell him of these things, whoever the servants may be, that the Lord knows before the servant speaks the things that he would tell him.
[1:50] But my friends, whether they certainly be the Holy Ghost, or the Lord Jesus Christ, as the Scripture teaches, or whether it be some appointed human being, or is a servant of the Lord, called to that idea today, by the operation of the Holy Ghost within the soul, we do know this, that it is the will of the Father that these things should be told to him.
[2:13] It is a careless, calmly-minded person who says, Because the Lord knows all things, I do not need to try. I do not need to tell him anything. But my kind of exercise soul does know the worth of man of prayer.
[2:30] They feel their own poverty by reason of their lack of it, and they know that they are really rich when the Lord enables them to pray from the heart. They know that there is a gift called the spirit of prayer and the grace of supplication, and this they desire to possess yet more and more.
[2:51] And I will have you remember this, friends, that if there be a complaint from your heart, which is really reflecting some dishonour that is due to the name of your God and your precious Christ, then the Lord will never become weary of you going and telling him about that thing.
[3:10] It may painfully be dispatched and complaints that affect you, but it is the matter, my friends, just simply, of its effect upon your person. So selfish matters won't be very tenderly dealt with, and they rather need to be confessed before God has enough sin than just simply take it to him and ask him to resolve the desire of our selfishness.
[3:33] But where we can see something, it may affect us, the church of Christ, it may affect the nation in which we live, or some other people for whom we pray. And as we see those things affecting the honour and the glory of the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, then I assure you that your frequent errors to the throne of grace concerning that matter will never weary your God.
[4:00] Rather, I believe, he says to us, Come, unbosom your heart to me, visit me more frequently, go near to the throne of grace more often. My ears open to thy cry, open thy mouth wide, and I will tip.
[4:16] And so, Brent, I did feel just that I must comment upon this word, so the servant carried, and showed him all these things. But what is it that the servant shows the Lord that has so solemnly peck in the attitude of the Lord to the tithing?
[4:34] It is the excuses that man makes in the rejection of the provision of God. That is really what is mentioned here. In this parable, of course, we have the case of man who made a great supper, from there he called those that have been previously been to come and sit down.
[4:55] And although the provision was so great that the dignity of a person high, nevertheless, they just simply brave of the person who had invited them, and they all, with one consent, began to make excuse.
[5:09] I realized this morning, my friends, how inadequate, quote, the idea of the introduction to this subject. But the singing, I do want to discuss a little more carefully to consider the nature of these excuses, and see whether there is not a translation of the nature of these excuses in this parable in the present-day events.
[5:30] The attitude of the heart, the mind, and will of men, even to the word of the everlasting gospel. And to ask ourselves more closely, because I think that is still an important matter of the world, to ask ourselves more closely whether we also are affected and ineffective by the same spirit of evil, excusing the excusing of some sin or folly or weakness in our own persons before the very gospel of the grace of the living God.
[6:02] I do not know of anything that is more important in this world's history than the proclamation of the gospel. There is no event, my friends, that is more important than the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, because all things hang upon the birth of the dear Emmanuel.
[6:19] The Apostle Paul speaks of this in glowing terms as he writes to Timothy, and he says, this is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.
[6:30] There may be some things spoken by name that are worthy of the acceptation of some of their fellow Christians, because it applies to them in particular way, but there is a limit to the application of the word.
[6:43] But since the Apostle Paul called this is worthy of all acceptation, there is a sense in which the word is suited to the condition of affairs which it deals with.
[6:54] There is no person, no nation, no people, no king or husband, but what is found in that condition in which this word would be suitable if only there should be some entry of it within their heart and conscience.
[7:07] It is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation. It doesn't say that everybody will accept it. It doesn't say that everybody can accept it if they will.
[7:18] I know there is a possibility about this because of the carnal mind and the depravity of the heart of man. It's not only that we cannot do, but we do not do and we will not do that is our sin.
[7:32] There is the sin. Here we find these people with one consent making excuses. First of all, the first excuse is to put the ground on the bridge.
[7:44] Deceitfulness of bridges choked words at the precious Christ in another parable, the parable of Sower, and had become an unproven. Of course these people had known the word. Of course they had been told in the time.
[7:57] Of course the indicators had been sent that the words were proclaimed all things are now there. But my friends, the deceitfulness of bridges causes them to minimize the value of the command and the proclamation is despised instead of being received.
[8:15] They begin with one consent to make you dispute. I have all of these a ground than a sin. I pray you have me dispute. And I expect my friends if we were to bring a present diaphyliction to this we should say.
[8:32] I had bought a motor car and I must lead, go and see it and prove it and I pray they have me excuse. Like from my very early studies I was impressed with it.
[8:46] I'm not suggesting the man shouldn't show me what he claims to. He did. A man who was a fellow business man in Huntington at the time and I was quite a young man there.
[8:59] And he had been most regular with all his parents in attainments at one of the local churches in Huntington not just in Baptist County but at one of the local churches in Huntington he was very regular in his attendance.
[9:12] I'm not at all sure my friends that his wife and his daughter were not in regular membership of the church at that particular place of work. And the time comes when he buys a motor car.
[9:24] Mind you it's anything as elaborate as the one I've got and it's nothing like as elaborate as some of those that you've got here tonight. But nevertheless it's a motor car and he gave tremendous opportunity to get him there.
[9:37] Now I know the man worked on a sanity until about 8 o'clock at night but he always had his Wednesday afternoon off. He was perfectly free on that afternoon. But you know my friends the tremendous interest that man took in his relatives on a Sunday was simply amazing.
[9:55] Never done so before. But every Sunday almost without exception that man had always got some reason to go out in his motor car somewhere and visit one of his relatives.
[10:07] Tremendously interested. One even told him their name but they said he always did him before when others did observe that. They all with one consent began to make his I have bought a motor car and I must need to prove that.
[10:24] You say well you've got a motor car Mr. Ron. Yes friends there's one thing I'm thankful about that motor car and that is that God gave it to me. Since I gave up my business I have never bought a motor car in my life.
[10:39] Motor car car would be given to me. Provision for the Lord would be given to me my God. Why can trace the hand of man in this that they would be given to me my God.
[10:50] And the first time that I had a motor car that was given to me my friend by the hand of my God I was driving home but if I went at night I can remember the place even now I sometimes look the Lord brought me to work into my soul be not I my need to fear that's what we need if not my friends we shall begin to make excuses we need a restraint of the Lord upon our soul or else if one can set we begin to make excuses God gives you something how are you going to do it when you say it's up to me it's!
[11:35] mine my friend it's a trust you know I haven't had them given to me like you have which I have but my friends you can get well how did you manage to get that 200 300 400 maybe a thousand pound I don't know whereby!
[12:07] he has been able to purchase a proper land and there in the place of the invitation that comes from this messy person he says I have purchased a proper land and I must need go and see it must be this guy this time of course it's only in the city maybe my friends I would say this is a bad agreed!
[12:37] the Lord man looks at the ultimate appearance but God looks at the heart the Lord said in his word they all with one consent began to make excuses shall I talk about the shame of it?
[12:58] shall I talk about the shame of it? No friends I not talk merely about the shame I mention the shame of it in Cassie but if this attitude is displayed toward the God of all great who hath revealed himself in the gospel of his own dear son I will not only speak of the shame of it but I will speak of the sin of it and I will speak of the iniquity of it and I will speak of the sin of it and the word of the Holy Ghost in your soul and mine that this may be brought to confession and we may confess our I will say that these excuses are the villainy of our own nature and of our own part even as we have been seeking in that last chapter I am thankful our friend this morning as he came out and he gave me that piece of paper with the number of that in order that's why I have changed the numbers of his some of you who got the numbers on the sheets know that each and all the suitability of it to my own soul seems to be very very real and the second one of course my friend he's got a kit he's got a heavy kit he said
[14:20] I had more pride over the oxen and I pray he have the excuse of course that's polite you know surprising how polite people can be my friends when they're accessing the commands of God however they make their excuses they can be tremendously polite to the Lord and also to his servants in hearing the excuses or they can be tremendously polite a man who looks upon the outward appearances may be deceived he may say yes there is some reason for this I can appreciate the arguments of the man he's very polite he's very kind he doesn't mean any harm perhaps there's no harm in it for the Lord who looks at the heart he knows my friend the nature of the excuse and they all with one consent began to make excuse they began to sin they began to commit iniquity transgress they began to trespass in other words they went over the bound that God had sent they began to trespass over the commands of their
[15:28] God they would one consent began to make excuse and another saying I have married a wife and therefore I cannot come marry if you married your wife of God with her if you don't you should be before God as a publican and a wicked man you'll bow in the presence of the Lord to care for her the Lord will take you at your word and deal with you according to the promise you have made man care for your wife wives care for your husband the same thing applies to you remember that I don't you when the man said to you will thou have this man will thou have this woman with all the things that are tied up with it you said I will and you will be made when you say there are not water run under the bridge and you said so can't happen the Lord knew it to go and die of the bridge let me assure you of this my friends the Lord knew what you said to you censor a few moments and consider these things
[16:30] I don't want to go on to the nature of the issues without understanding the fact my friend that the Lord looks upon us and he knows our relationship to love another and they are weighing in the man's and they say well I'm not to be completely fed up with this person well that may be so may God give you the mind of Christ you know what he said my friends to his children on one occasion about forgiving they came to him one day and they said how old shall a man forgive his brother if a man should forgive his brother seventy times how many times should he forgive his wife and how many times should the wife forgive her husband after the contract my friend that took place in the very presence of God and under the eye of the Lord how many times should I forgive!
[17:20] I leave the answer to you oh I know that you can work it out at 490 times I hope my friend before you come to number 490 you could let where he began let me assure you of this my friend the Lord has forgiven me more than 490 if he dealt with this church my friends as men today deal with their wives and wives deal with their husbands I don't know where salvation would be I don't know salvation is in piling of God's grace that's the nature salvation I have married a wife and therefore I cannot die but having established that faith and I didn't be devastated by this tonight but I felt that I must just establish this that relationship of that nature my friends is something that is ordained and given and honour to
[18:22] God nor how do these be mindful of this don't think young man or young woman that you have strength and grace and ability enough to do this and he said to me he rather his wife and he does say there's one command that is the easiest of the world for me to abide one command is gone I said oh you find it easy to abide him he said yes ever so easy I want to step further to put a wife or a husband in the place that
[20:16] God or Jesus Christ occupy in our life and in our hearts of age is a simple thing I was really impressed the other dark reading these words in 1 Corinthians 6 chapter the 7 chapter the Apostle called in that chapter of I think perhaps as often read as it would be wise for us to read it one that doesn't often seem to be referred to in these days one that contains an antidote for much of the present day evil that is existing in marital relationships the Apostle there said the time is short what time is short well I think the reference my friends is two things first the destruction of Jerusalem of all its terrors that would be consequent upon it and the awful strain of persecution that will come upon the churches of
[21:24] Christ not only in Jerusalem but Corinth and other cities as well but I think also the Apostles constantly dismining the fact that the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is promised well you say two thousand years of passage then nearly and he hasn't come in my friend big handle big handle you remember how there were men that were recruited once by God when they said where is the promise of his coming at the end of the world so they say because he waited so long we can do what we like and regard the promise that he is coming with impunity because I say brethren the time is short that one to whom a thousand years is a day and the days is a thousand years my dear friend the word is still true the time is short let me assure you this friend the time of life is very very short some of you perhaps are very young here and you've been sort of calculating it up and you you've said well
[22:31] I'm twenty twenty one and I've got seventy years to live well that leaves me with forty nine I've got more time yet to live than the past you know friends I word that God's voice might be heard in your soul tonight saying to you the time is short the time is short think of what you crammed into this last week think of how you tore around the country in your motorcars think of all the work you've done the business you've attended to think of all the money that's passed through your hands and the money you may have done in the problem of your industry but the time is short beloved the time is short and if you should see the end of your life your poor body should be carried to the grave as is the country with such multitude!
[23:28] as I say rather the time is short it remains that those they that can't lie even though they have none and they that weep as though they let not and they that rejoice as though they rejoice not and they that buy as though they possess not and they that use this world as not abusing it for the passion of this world can't it away I marry a wife and therefore I cannot come all friends of me the more indeed to the blessed provision of God for the need of man I will make him a health meat for him to the blessed provision of God for the health of men to be my friends of that to be calm as time to man with use there in the face of the pure clear teaching of the gospel blessed commands of the grace of God pertaining to Jesus Christ there should be those ones who should make our human relationships alive and we should turn our back upon the gospel of the
[24:33] Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and count it to be unworthy of our consideration and our obedience in comparison with that which our natural hearts affect him is said by they all with one consent began to make excuses and of course friends although the reasons may be very valid and they may influence the mind and they may considerably they may set up a new pattern in religion and other people may say well because there's so and so the minister and the teacher will leave other people to disorder so we shall also be able to do the same although with one consent they all began to make excuses and that's the Lord because not only how to appear at the heart of man you know my friends the next thing I want to notice after we have noticed the excuses is the divine anger that is against those who make excuses in the place of the extent and worth and wonder and grace of the everlasting gospel of the Lord and Saint
[25:42] Jesus Christ and we read here the master of the house being angry saves and so I praise my God very often friends that I may be kept from anger I know there is a commandment of the word that says be angry and sin not let not the sun go out and you're rocked but the trouble my friends even with what we may consider to be well placed anger or indignation in our heart against certain things that may seem to affect the honour and glory of God and the welfare of the church is this that my friends the sun does go down upon our rock and we harbour a ground and we think more about our own reputation and our own popularity and our own prosperity than we do about the honour of our God contained these words if he has said to me my friends a man who can so easily arise but is so slow to abate very opposite to God where it is so slow to rise and so speedy to abate as there
[26:59] Christ is viewed in the perfection of his atonement on behalf of the guilty if my friends I am the man that I describe myself to be and I know I am oh how terrible is it they need that in me there should be found the defiance of the council brother so I need the Lord to constantly speak to me and say my son my servant if thou be angry let not the sun go down upon my father but all my friends the anger the indignation of God sin is that what you feel you're resting under tonight the anger the indignation of your God do you remember that excuse you made in the face of the teaching of the everlasting gospel do you remember the nature of that excuse you made in the face my friends of the clear proclamation of the will of Jesus Christ of the loving one who loved and gave himself the sin do you remember that is there no guilt of your conscience but all friends if there is how right is the burden of that guilt he was angry you know friends there is an aspect about the anger of God that is absolutely a terrible of mind he's a one line none can change it none can change but all friends there is one there was a point in his blood of God by his own precious blood there is one that stood before the indignation of his hunger there was the unbear the bare sword was revealed and he was about to be granted upon the wicked one they were to be utterly consumed by the rock of God there was one who stands forth and he bears his heart to the soul and he is fierce by it he suffers unto and he dies but the same might be a hope that where your hope and your reckoning is friends if you say to me that that is your hope and your reckoning and you believe the
[29:13] Lord has revealed his mercy to your soul in this respect and yet you find no no restriction upon your spirit to continue in your execution which is the occasion of this indignation of the most part my dear I don't understand what you believe to be the working of the spirit of God in your soul but if on the other hand I fear for your dependent one who knows the gift that hangs upon their conscience they know that these excuses that they have made in the place and life of the gospel and the gift of Jesus Christ is hungry because they're shy even about all their equality and there friends that great is the hope that they hold upon this blessing hope that is in the gospel today then friends how they will lower themselves and how they will thank glory in them not yet any gain from the result of them but my friends they will say this is my shame and my gain is my death sin to be forgiven me and there is only one of him and that is by his own death and blood he was angry and there's a case in my friends that his anger is demonstrated in two lives here are certain persons of whom it says in the last verse of our text none of these men have been should face my son sin uncontempsed excuses maintain declare to be just and reasonable the
[30:56] Lord can't be excusing self justifying persons who think that there's a deception within his son he says these men shall not partake with my son listen to the other words my friends the Lord is going to have a supper my day in my father's house and many mansions if it were not so I would have told you I go to prepare a place for you that where I am they may be yours these Jews who would have been custodians of the world for years and years who knew the coming of the Messiah they reject him completely the Lord the Lord says to the disciples his followers he says go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in the poor and the maim and the home and the blind are you one amen person not worthy of invitation person who can't see any evidence why they should be included in the proclamation of divine grace person who seems to think that everything in them and everything they have done and everything they thought and everything they will is so completely spoiled and marred by sin that a holy one could never receive an entertainment this power holy high rested dignified why which is the son of his man who are the poor blessed are the poor not only!
[32:26] they can be it is a pocket my friends that is a test fee blessed are the poor in spirit but theirs is the kingdom of heaven round the Lord in his book that was published by the man of truth some ago he went to see a very wicked woman buying a cheap lodging house where he was living and how this woman was quite sure!
[32:55] she was! heaven and he spoke to her he seemed to be influenced by the rapture of her spirit the prospect of getting heaven in the age he said to the woman why do you think you're going to heaven well she said I because she had to to her God agreed that we should face our hope and mystery you need a kind of poverty with which to come before your God and plead the name of Jesus a person who can be absolutely destined to give a single hand in their pocket that's so news today with regard to the decimals that coming in the answer would be destined to even me yet!
[33:52] my friends that is not the end of heaven not that kind of my friends it's where a man thought of the Holy Ghost known as his real poverty and there he has to cry for mercy out of the poverty of his soul when sinners brought home to his conscience and he knows his death before God the death that nothing can ever but he when they had nothing!
[34:18] ah! we will frankly forgive more absolutely divine of men run out into the streets and lanes of the city and bring in the poor and the money see what the devil does the fear is inspired from their soul their strength and hope and love see how they had to be married see the effect of sin from that person all their good things marred and spoiled they cannot go on they go back into the dark money money money can't pray a right prayer can't make a real confession of mercy can't believe that money money repel their meaning oh my friends affect me by this prayerful power of the day money money all go out and bring the lenses and the hall the hall poor miss of fear that
[35:25] John Banya described you borrow it he was holding not to opinions that wasn't it there are some persons who holds a Christian opinion that is the word he opinion this is a kind thing he was a person who takes a few steps and then he has to hold he can't go any further his weakness comes over he can't take another step!
[35:51] sees all those hot god things that the old young bun speaks about and he is afraid that they are hands upon him dragging down again and there he is holding on the way bring in the blind the right you know there are people my friends who say to me well of course the terms of salvation are the clearest thing that there would be the world all he must do is just believe and repent and he'll be saved he's as simple as that he's just as claim as tight as that Yet my friends they're not a fall sin-convicted guilty woman or man the gospel is a fall word of divine revelation they really are not a deal but all my friends they just they just can't see that I live can't see their name without assure my conscience they say of its part
[36:56] I'm blind to them I just can't can't see it I can't believe it I can't entertain it assure my conscience of its part in the redeemer's blood and bear witness to my heart that I am more than God go said the Lord and of course friends it can't be served when we come to the further world about things when although the house isn't completely full the Lord takes his servant out of the gate and he says go out into the highways of the gate I was thinking of this I thought of that poor man you know who made his house among the tombs and cut himself with all sorts of knives and horrible things you know he was out in the highways and he's right enough my friends he was cast out of all society he was a man dominated by the devil yes he'd be doing the weak with of the wicked one and what if some of you have got nice toes on you've got a nice smile on your face you'll even talk quite nicely to the minister you know friends some of you are just in that place right now hiding in the highway in the road that there were your Lord in your message ah that's the Lord has taken you by his words that we were to come up from God by the key words to talk about your frequency of the sanctuary when what you bring into the sanctuary my friends is clear evidence of the world that is of your nature and the strange power that is being exercised in your mind by those things you think you've come to play when you're in the house of prayer
[38:35] I've been there and I know the horrible things and nothing but the greatest God can save you from the dying angel of it that I know I've proved it I've proved it here the Lord says to his servant not servants now friends but the servants there's a distinction between this parable and the parable of the wedding feast of the son of the prince he was a servant only one can do go out into the high ways and heads and compel them to come in that my house may be there the work will be soon in the love nobody can come of course I know I've been a favorite text of the Romans who've gone there in the foreign countries my friends in one hand they've had the sword and the other they've had the cross and they said I do believe in the cross else you have the sword compel them to come in that day we've got the one with the verdict of God to compel people that we've been my friend that's not the slightest significance of that there's a false and evil one dominated by men and the spirits of men but oh friends there's a compulsion of what only goes what is it there is one that works in you to willing to do the good pleasure of your God towards you there is the one who makes you and me racy rebels against God that we are willing to die of the demonstration of his power and power in the country that my house may be filled it will be in my father's house of any nation if my outside would have told you
[40:13] I go and can't face you for where I am there you may be also not like those mansions I feel to be my friends I look round on this congregation Lord though the earth of my soul are you I desire you all to have an interest in this blessed proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ for you I long that you all may know and possess the grace of God that flows through Jesus with you you know I think of one who looks down upon the sons of men and he knows just those who are his own children there as he looks upon you says father I will that all those who thou hast given to be with me while I am that they may behold my glory the glory that shall gave us me before the world walk beholding my glory their heart may be filled with rapture that this one is so glorious and glorified himself in condescending the most victim of sin that this world has ever done and peril was coming for my house may be filled so friends as I close this world all I can say to you is that
[41:34] I pray that God may work in your hearts for this although as now perhaps you know under the teaching of your God that you're poor miserable blind angry mind at home and so although you try to hide yourself like his who shines before your God although you be in the tomb the devil's head must be only there is one that appears from him from him proceeds the holy devil's head such as as as as as as!
[42:10] the barrier fear that may be in the world that would cause you to turn aside and say no they can never be a welcome for me at the hand of God because of what I am that word of the spirit may be that you may be separate may draw an eye by faith in Jesus Christ and say no glad I come and thou blessed man will take me to the hand I am nothing but sin have I to give but nothing but grace shall I receive that's what he said and his word is true Amen
